Bad luck for Nick. Not entirely surprised given he has had injury problems all week.

Can't get excited about this since it's unlikely I'll see any of it. Hope the Aussies do well but no doubt they'll all be knocked out by about round three.

Just call me Nostradamus :p

You have to wonder if he has been carrying the injury what the hell he is doing playing doubles as well.
Yeah that's a puzzler. He seems to really enjoy doubles; I would say he was cleared to play through the injury and didn't want to miss out. Not a very professional decision if that's it, though, but understandable.

Nick cant win either way.
Not training hard enough ie implication he parties.
Parties too much ie focus not on tennis
Gets injured too soft
Uses injury as excuse for losing too soft
Plays doubles gets told to cut back
Doesn't play doubles he is too individual

I don't like the personality of Nick. I am off him at the moment but even I could see he was struggling and has been injured from the start.

I will ask the question of those who know how this works. Is there relief from ranking points if injured/retiring during a match as opposed to losing a match ( even though its in the book as a loss) ?

I don't think so, it's just bad luck. Being fit is part of being able to compete. The only relief I know of is the protected ranking you receive in the case of long term injuries and I think you can only use that once.

lol McEnroe, well I disagree with his comments. McEnroe was a big brat during his tennis days, so he shouldnt be so critical and judgmental. The media have become too invested into Nick's tennis career, they should let him do whatever he wants.

John McEnroe has challenged Nick Kyrgios to quit professional tennis if his heart isn't in the game, but the Australian attributed his retirement from the third round of the US Open to training and playing overload.

Commentating on American television, McEnroe was scathing of Kyrgios's demeanour before the Australian retired from his match against Illya Marchenko with a hip injury.

Shame that injury lingered, but damn is he a name in tennis now.

Primetime on Arthur Ashe against an unseeded opponent. Some of its probably because he's such an exciting player to watch, which also figures into how he's mercurial like that. But feels like his whole 'brand' is appreciated more by the rest of the world than it is in Australia which is dumb and a shame.

Haven't had that kind of attention for a tennis player male or female since Lleyton was no. 1.

During the last few matches the commentators pointed out that Kygrios is becoming a big name in tennis but in Australia the media treat him unfairly, or often focus on the negative aspects of Nick.

Ugh, was looking so good if it wasn't for this injury.... Could of gone really deep here. Was just hoping he would just slap winners after that 2nd set but anyways. I do have to question playing doubles throughout the week, makes no sense.

Only just caught up on watching the days play , watched it without looking at facebook or anything for scores so it was like i was watching live, was a shame that he got injured. He was genuinely injured so im shocked but not surprised aussie media is completely ripping into him judging from what i just read in this thread.

The guy has genuine heart u can see it on his face when he was in tears. Yes a year ago or more i would say he didnt give 2 ****s about the game. But the way hes handled himself in the last few months has being 90% class.

Look at hewitt in his early years, alot of people hated him until he calmed down, i can see similarities with kyrgios just wish the media would just calm down and lay off him.

Im putting it out there now kyrgios will win a grand slam by the end of 2018. And remember hes only 21 give the guy a god dam break

I think with Nick there is no subterfuge, WYSIWYG. If he feels happy he will show it, likewise angry, peed off, sad (to the point of tears) or whatever. If he has a thought he says it (or tweets it!). I think we need to take a lot of what he says and does with a grain of salt, he probably feels differently a few minutes later. Just enjoy his tennis which at it's best is very good and fun to watch and don't read too much into the other stuff.

Kyrgios still has some attitude issues, but the media's negative campaign against him is disproportionate to his wrongdoings over the last year.

I wish they would lay off the guy for a while and just analyse his tennis abilities (whether it be his strengths or weaknesses).

While im on my aussie media bashing rage feel atm, just watched the 4th set tiebreak in the wawrinka/evans match, let the crowd noise and atmosphere do more of the talking like the commentators are doing during this u.s open to often our pea brained commentators talk way to much and make dumb comments.

The crowd speaks volumes for whats happening on court especially when you got a real parochial crowd like in this match or going back a year or 2 in the kokkinakis match at the aus. Open when he won in 5 sets in the 1st round i think it was. I was there at the match, watched the match on replay and im fairly sure basil was commentating making completely dumb comments over the top of the raucous crowd.

You can learn sometimes off the yanks, well some anyway just not that dumb al guy who commentates the night sessions
