That is all.

:D JMDP= LEGEND!

Thing is, you make that prediction every single tournament so it doesn't really count.

I think this time he might be right. lol  Good riddance, there was something about Federer that has never sat right with me, could never quite put my finger on it. The media constantly fawning over him pracitcally giving him a figurative BJ everytime they mention his name hasn't helped. And that goes for rafa too, about time some new blood entered the stage. :thumbsu: :D

The only reason Nadal's record over Fed is so great is because they only meet when Nadal is in good form, otherwise Nadal cant make it to the final to play against him. Fed would have smoked Nadal if he met him at this years US.
Too much of a coincidence to buy that theory I reckon as you would also have to conveniently assume Federer hasn't been at his best when they meet. No, that's just too long a bow to draw, the most obvious conclusion from those results is that's rafa's best > fed's best which puts a huge dent on his stake for the title of GOAT.

Either that or Rafa is a genius for deliberately bowing out of tournament instead of meeting him as his record against fed now looks insurmountable. Fed has to seriously address this issue and close the gap at the very least before he retires from the game or else it will plague his otherwise illustrious career.

Ridiculous statement, I'm dumbfounded and laughing.

The reason for their head to head record is because Nadal's style crushes Federer's gameplan, and he has 0 backup plan to match it with him.

Back to the women's, gotta love clijsters winning - just proves how poor women's tennis is in my opinion. Players like Safina and Jankovic are a joke considering how talented they are compared to how they perform

Firstly, they have a disproportionate amount of meetings on clay, which rafa is undisputably the best on.
Secondly, There have been many cases where Fed would have beaten Rafa had Rafa not already been knocked out of the tournament (ie. this year's US Open)
Thirdly, So what if Rafa has a good record against Fed? Fed has a better record against pretty much everyone else.

I do agree that he needs to beat him a few times before the end of his career otherwise his GOAT claims wont be as strong, but Im pretty confident he will do that, simply because Fed is a better player IMO.

Are they even that talented? They just seem like run-of-the-mill top 10 players to me. I'm waiting for a new Hingis or Graf to make a mockery of all these crappy female players.

Great work by Del Potro. I actually tipped him to beat Federer in the final, with Nadal and Djokovic being the losing semi-finalists, before the tournament started. Should've put some money on it but I still wasn't overly confident.

Andy Murray is now the only member of the dominant top 6 without a Grand Slam. Will he get 1? Personally, I think his best chance next year is Wimbledon with the crowd behind him, but he's gonna find it tough.

In the rankings, Nadal rightfully moves back ahead of to the number 2 position, while Del Potro goes back up to number 5. He could get to number 3 by the end of the year, but number 4 ahead of Djokovic and behind Murray seems more likely.

1. Federer - 15 GS
2. Nadal - 6 GS
3. Murray - 0 GS
4. Djokovic - 1 GS
5. Del Potro - 1 GS
6. Roddick - 1 GS

The other point of interest is who will grab the last 2 spots in the ATP World Tour Finals this year. It's a close battle between Verdasco, Gonzalez, Tsonga, Davydenko and Soderling.

Federer has had plenty of time to figure out rafa, years to be precise. And yet he doesn't look like he's anywhere close to doing that, he looks as puzzled and frustrated as ever when playing against him. And this is when rafa has also been carrying injuries which is of course not federer's fault.

If that trend of losing to Rafa persists though, then he has no legitimate claim on being the GTOA. Shame that, greats like Sampras had no such qualms in dispatching nemesis' in big matches like Agassi. I'm more inclined to bestowe on him that title than Fed.

Nadal hasn't been good enough to meet Federer anywhere but clay for most of their matches.

edit someone already said this..but reinforcing

i am talking about his matchup problems with nadal and murray  now he must face either of rafa, jmdp, murray in the semi finals. This is the end of federer, bookmark it...he would be lucky to win another slam :) , his best chance is wimbledon.
Where have you been hibernating all winter, like the snake you appear to be? Must have been hell on earth for you this year, Fed in all 4 Grand Slam finals, wins 2, Nadal gets dumped to #3, you must be on medication, but better still for you Fed gets beaten by a giant gun in rare form. The same gun who obliterated Nadal 2 2 2 yesterday. Fed at least looked as if he could have won this, but he had an off day. If he was injured, we wouldn't know about it. When Nadal is off, he's either tired, injured or getting over an injury.
Now of course Fed is finished???. Fed is finished when he says he is finished, not when you declare it, because you have said this before. Your transient gloating and elation in the losses he has is pathetic, but you are consistent, we'll give you that. Knew you'd be all over this thread today.
As far as I can see it, Fed has surpassed all my expectations this year, and has reclaimed #1, 1st ever to do so, and has beaten Murray and Djokovic en route, and Nadal not good enough to even make it to any final since Aus. He doesn't have to play another match ever again and will go down as best ever, Pete Sampras said so. I can accept that. It's now up to Del Potro, Nadal Djoko, Murray etc. to get anywhere near the consistency of excellence that Fed displays.

Nadal making the wimbledon final in 06, 07 and 08 (and a high chnce for a 4th year in a row if he wasn't injured) cannot be ignored. Keep in mind Nadal was 20 when he first made that final. Nadal has improved his game markedly from 2008 onwards, as proven by his AO win.

I would expect a fully fit Nadal to be a genuine challenger at all four grand slams.

I mean look at how many of federer's slams were won from say 2004-2007, which is before nadal was even 21 years old, and had really taken his game to the next level outside of the FO (he's been a freak at rolland garros since he was a boy). That to me largely refutes the excuse of nadal not being good enough to meet federer anywhere byu clay, hence explaining fed's grand slam number in comparison to Nadals.

Haven't bothered to read through the thread...things on the Tennis board always seem to devolve into slanging matches between Nadal-lovers/Fed-haters and Fed-worshippers. You'll probably have an easier time sorting out things in the Middle East than reaching a resolution between Nadalism and Fedism.

I'm a fan of both guys - fantastic players obviously and by all accounts good guys by nature...didn't know it was a prerequisite to hate one if you liked the other...but I guess people interpret things (and people's actions) differently.

Anyhoo, as far as the final goes, it seemed like a pretty high standard match - well the parts of it I saw anyways (thanks channel 9 ).

A well deserved win for the Del Potro. The semi-final win against Rafa was some of the most impressive hitting I've seen in a long time.
And how about the turnaround from the complete and utter humiliation of the Australian Open loss to Federer earlier this year?
Del Potro was in sulk mode with his head hanging low for most of that Aus Open match, but there was none of that today after losing the 1st set. His mentality seems to be the most important improvement in his game.

Looks like he found his rhythm, hit hard and consistently enough to not allow Federer to dictate points and did not tighten up towards the ends of sets.

To have a guy this tall and powerful, who moves well around the court, is strong on both wings is...well he could be at the top of the game for some time to come.
I guess the main questions may be, Can he keep playing at a high level consistently while keeping a good head on his shoulders?

For the sake of the sport, hopefully he doesn't go the same way as a Safin or Philippoussis and instead stays concentrated on Tennis.

I was watching the CBS stream, and you could see how quickly they wanted to get it done, after they showed him holding the trophy they basically elft in a hurry to show.... How I met Your Mother repeats.

wow sounds like channel 9... Seriously 7 does an excellent job with AO compared to what it looks like CBS does to to the US Open. 7 puts everything on hold if a good match is still running (e.g. that fed marathon against tipsarevic a couple of years ago).
**** now I hate CBS and the USTA.

LOL feds not gonna get del potro neither he is gonna beat nadal in a slam. Having matchup problems with murray, he can only hope the draw opens up for him.Thats how he won his majority of slams, beating nobodies in the final :thumbsu:

Can I ask why you hate Fed so much 'Total Power'? Im just interested because he has so many good qualities and I would like to hear what you actually like in a tennis player in you don't like Fed...

Winning less Grand Slams would help I think.

Total Power claims he has been personally insulted by Fed not signing something of possible value, and has since heard Fed is not a nice guy like we all think he is. Sounds like TP is a teenager or child who understands tennis but has no idea about humanity and would make a great case for counselling, which is what we are doing for him.
