Melanie Oudin making some big waves in the WTA. Took our Sharapova this morning. (:):thumbsu:) Dementieva last round, and Jankovic at Wimbledon. She's got Nadia Petrova next up who has been abysmal this year. Genuine chance to make the quarter finals. Perhaps even the semi's, Kuznetsova hasn't been the same since she won the French Open.

8:50pm in New York and the day session is still going strong. Won't beat the AO record, but could come close.

Oh and Rodionova lost to Bondarenko in straight sets.

Anyone else feel a little cheated by the fifth set tiebreaker between Roddick and Isner? I would've preferred the to see who could hold serve the longest. Bad luck for Roddick.

Another upset, finally on the mens side. Isner over Roddick in 5 on his 4th match point.
Big ups to Isner, didn't think he could hold on in the last set, called the medico a couple of times, but he played a faultless tie break.

They've moved the Safina match to Armstrong so they won't be playing all day today. The Blake match is the one i wanted to see anyway.

What a day though, highlighted by Oudin's win, match had so much drama, she's such a fighter, her counter punching groundies work really well. Reaction at the end from her and the crowd showed what the us open is all about. Isner was great as well, just served really well in th 5th, Roddick must be absolutely spewing, I do feel sorry for him, i really hope he can win that second major.

Djokovic struggling against Witten was fun too, pity Jesse couldn't serve the 3rd set out but really Djoko went about 5 levels below the tennis he was playing against Ball (and he only played ok against Ball). Haas should never of lost to Verdasco but has helped my multi, hopefully James can pull through for me now.

Rodionova lost her match against Bondarenko 7-6, 6-4. She did serve for that first set

Safina is out, finally, another horrific match, Kvitova did serve for the match but finally won in a 3rd set TB. Kvitova, Wickmayer, Bondarenko and Dulko, one of those is making the semis

Blake out too, had a nice multi with Verdasco, Soderling and Blake, of course James would let me down. You have 20,000 New Yorkians supporting you, can't drop your serve like that when trying to serve out a set.

Great day of tennis :thumbsu:

I don't know how the ITF allows them to have final set tiebreaks. It's a grand slam FFS, the advantage final set is something that makes them even more special. It really pisses me off to no end. Takes away one of the greatest aspects of the sport.

Yea. But the US Open has it for $ reasons. They don't want extremely long and epic matches to be taking place at the US Open. They're more interested in the matches being able to finish on time. :thumbsd::mad:

Safina, Ivanovic, Jankovic all in the same quarter.... will be interesting to see how that pans out :p

Unbelivable quarter. At least it provided some lolz. :thumbsu:
Serena is going to breeze to this title without dropping a set.

I see that joke James Blake is out, unsurprising.

The 5th set tie-break is the thing that puts the US Open 4th on the list out of all the slams. To get rid of a fantastic component of Grand Slam tennis that is the final advantage set, for the purpose of television, is very disappointing. Who knows what the score could have been in the Isner-Roddick match, if there was no tie-break in the 5th set.
We would not have had the epic Wimbledon final this year between Roddick and Fed if they adopted final set tie-break also.

The mens draw has mostly panned out as expected, really thought it was going to be a Roddick-Fed 1/4 final. Djoko's form is patchy, Murray playing well enough and it's early to pick Nadal's form at this point. Excellent win by Verdasco against Haas as Haas has been playing very well the last couple of months. Fed to win the title though.

On the Womens side of the draw, unbelieveable amount of upsets. Safina, Dementieva and Jankovic you would think would own a grand slam title, but it eludes them all. I hope that by the end of their careers, Dementieva and Safina can manage to win at least one grand slam. Winner of the tournament will come out of Williams/Williams/Clijsters.

Imagine the final finishes in a 5th set tiebreak. Would be very sad day for tennis.

I might be alone but I hate the crowd getting to their feet after like every ‘big’ point. I mean sure if it's an absolutely amazing point worthy of a standing ovation, but they seem to do it all the time. It’s tennis, not basketball. I’m all for getting into a game but the Americans are so ridiculous and over the top, just like everything they do. :o

Yesterday was pretty awesome, Hewitt giving it right to Federer, Isner causing the massive upset against Roddick by playing amazing tennis. The first 2 sets were some of the finest and cleanest hitting I've seen and there was nothing Roddick could do. Held his nerve remarkably well in the 5th set tiebreak.

Cirstea was disappointing in falling easily to Wozniacki. :( One of her and Kuznetsova will reach the final and it's hard to believe that one in the group of Kvitova, Wickmayer, Bondarenko and Dulko will reach a GS Semi!

Djokovic was pretty terrible against the big fella Witten. Will need to lift a few notches if he wants to challenge Federer.

Would be horrible. :thumbsd: One day it’ll happen and it just should not be allowed, it’s a cheap way to finish.

Tbh Federer isn't playing that great, its just the fact his main rivals aren't playing much better. Del Potro to me looks the big danger to fed, won his first 2 matches easily and very rarely is troubled by players he should beat comfortably. Nadal isnt at peak form and wont be till at least the australian so he wont win. Murray and djokovic need to pull the finger out becasue they are capable of winning because like i said federer isn't setting the world on fire, Hewitt had many chances in that match.

Another random American rule to go with the deciding set tiebreak...

If you belt the ball into the crowd, like baseball, you can just keep the ball...

Strange country that US of A....

I quite like that rule. If the ball gets belted into the crowd, I think it's great to allow the fan who gets his/her hand on it to keep it and take it home as a souvenir. It kind of sucks that we don't get to keep it at the Australian Open.

Really?
What for, so Tennis Australia can flog it off for $3? Disgrace. :thumbsd:

Good for Kim, now that would be a real fairytale if she took home the USO. Perhaps better than Jelena's AO run.

I don't normally like women's tennis, but this match Zvonareva-Pennetta is quality.

yeah, it really picked up in the last few games. Pity Vera is going to lose her mind her in 3rd after 6mp's. I see tears coming.

At the Aus Open, you are allowed to keep the ball if it is hit at the end of the match. If you get a ball that has been hit into the crowd during the match, then you have to return it. I think what Ashley12 is saying is that at the US open you can keep the ball if it has been hit to you during the match, which is stupid. As 6 new balls are used after every 9 games, if three of those balls go into the crowd, you will only have 3 balls to use until the next change is due.

Thats what I meant. The issue is that with 6 balls in the rotation, and all of a sudden one ball gets smashed by Federer or whoever in row Z, then they need to add another ball into the rotation, which will be at a different stage of wear and tear. Slight issues from that. The actual serve an ace to win the match then belt the ball into the stands is fine by me...

That was a great game.:thumbsu:
Zvonareva had that game in the bag though late in the second set with 6 match point opportunities. But you've got to give credit to Pennetta, who fought hard all the way to save the game, then to take out the second set with 4 consecutive points in the tiebreak (when Vera was leading 6-4).
Vera pretty much lost it after that and the 3rd set and the match was always going to belong to Pennetta.:thumbsu:
Good for Clijsters to come out and win too and beat Venus.:)
