I don't blame Serena for what she did, if I got foot faulted at a cruical point I would probably do the same thing, heat of the moment, even the calmest person would lose their mind there. I mean the line judge must be sure of that call, a shame that they don't even have a camera on the line (surely, has to be a must to have a camera there?) because at point of the match, calling such a nit-picky rule is very tough to do. If the call is correct, well done you have just made the bravest call in the history of tennis. If the call is wrong, that linejudge shouldn't be anywhere near a tennis court again.
What really grinds my gears is when people don't know what is/isn't racist.
I don't agree with your assessment of the line umpire. She called what she saw. She saw the foot fault and she called it. It does not matter at what stage the match is in, she had a job to do and she did it. It is not a nit-picky rule in grand slam tennis, as there is a line umpire who is looking for that exact thing on every single serve. One thing that I have wondered is whether you can use hawk eye on a foot fault call? I don't think you can, but maybe that needs to be brought in.
In the heat of the moment, you can understand how frustrated Serena could have been, however, she stepped a fair way over the line in her reaction the line umpire. If that same incident had happened half way through the match, and Serena reacted in the same way, it is completely plausible that she would have been defaulted from the match.
If you read the rules of tennis from the ITF, you will see that you are not allowed to threaten, verbally or physically, an official on court. In doing so, you can be defaulted from the match. This is why I think Serena deserves a ban of some sort. Not a long ban, but something like a 2 tournament ban would be enough. I know that might seem dramatic, but threatening to kill a line judge by shoving a tennis ball down their throat, in a US Open semi final with a huge audience watching, there needs to be a consequence for that action.
i would actually rather they ban her for the stupid press conference she gave afterwards.
She knew what she said to the line judge and she should have apologised for that in the press conference.
Why should she appologise for a wrong decision in her eyes. Honestly. I hate Serena but she has every right to let the WTA sort it out!![]()
At the moment, the men's final is on at 6am Tuesday which could mean that might be delayed on nine as well at 9am. If it is delayed I know where i will be watching it instead.
Great result but I must say this. I have said this for ages, why the hell can't they just introduce a foot fault "warning" first. Honestly, one of the most stupid rules is this foot fault rubbish which half the time the line judges are dead wrong anyway. Give the players 1 warning and if they do it again, by all means call it.
You don't think she should have apologised for telling an umpire that is going to ****ing kill her by shoving a tennis ball down her throat? I think she should have apologised for that without any prompt from the WTA.
I'm pretty sure she had a foot fault eariler in the match
You sure that was not in the semi final. The point I am making is the penalty for a first offence for a foot fault is too high. I wish line judges and umpires used a notion of common sense!
