USFL to have a “player selection meeting” on February 22-23

Posted by Mike Florio on January 4, 2022, 11:05 AM EST

After nearly 40 years, the USFL returns in April. More information is emerging about the plans for the reconstituted pro football league. (Technically, it’s not affiliated or associated with the 1980s-era USFL, even though the eight initial teams will be named after the eight original USFL teams.)

A Tuesday memo sent to all NFL Players Association contract advisors explains that a “player selection meeting” will happen on February 22-23. To be eligible for selection, players must sign a contract with the league before then.

The USFL will operate as a single entity, and players will be employed directly by the USFL. Each of the eight teams will have a 38-man active roster and a seven-man practice squad.
Players will receive “base compensation,” and they will be eligible for “win bonuses.”

Eligibility to join the USFL hinges on graduating from high school in 2020 or earlier. This means that the USFL will accept players after only two years of college.

Training camps open on March 21, and the 10-week season starts in April. Games will be televised by Fox (which owns the league) and NBC.

Skip Holtz, Kirby Wilson will coach USFL teams

Posted by Josh Alper on January 20, 2022, 2:57 PM EST

The USFL announced two more head coaches for the season that it plans to launch this spring.

Skip Holtz will coach the Birmingham Stallions and Kirby Wilson will coach the Pittsburgh Maulers. Bart Andrus (Philadelphia Stars), Todd Haley (Tampa Bay Bandits), Mike Riley (New Jersey Generals), and Kevin Sumlin (Houston Gamblers) were previously announced as head coaches and there are two more announcements to come for the New Orleans Breakers and Michigan Panthers.

Holtz spent the last nine seasons at Louisiana Tech, but was fired at the end of the 2021 season after going 3-9. Holtz has also been a head coach at South Florida, East Carolina, and Connecticut during a college coaching career that also featured time on his father Lou’s staffs at Notre Dame and South Carolina.

Wilson spent most of the last 25 years as an assistant in the NFL. He was most recently the running backs coach for the Raiders in 2019 and 2020 and previously served in the same role for seven other teams.

NBC, Fox to simulcast USFL opener

Posted by Michael David Smith on January 25, 2022, 9:16 AM EST

Whether the upstart USFL can succeed where other spring football leagues have failed remains to be seen, but there’s little doubt that the league’s first game will draw a large audience.

Both NBC and Fox will simulcast the first USFL game on Saturday, April 16, according to Sports Business Journal. The prime time game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. ET.

It’s extremely rare for two broadcast networks to simulcast the same game, and it guarantees that plenty of people will watch. Ultimately the USFL’s success or failure will depend more on hard-core football fans and degenerate gamblers than on casual viewers, but by getting on two of the four broadcast networks, the USFL is ensuring that casual viewers won’t have any trouble finding the first game. And some of those casual viewers may turn into fans, especially if the league is able to put on an entertaining on-field product.

After the opener, other USFL games will be broadcast on NBC, Fox, USA Network, Peacock and FS1.

The USFL debuted in 1983 and had three seasons before going out of business. Its return will feature eight teams carrying the names of original franchises: Michigan Panthers, New Jersey Generals, Philadelphia Stars, Pittsburgh Maulers, Birmingham Stallions, Houston Gamblers, New Orleans Breakers and Tampa Bay Bandits. But despite the city names, all of this season’s USFL games will be played in Birmingham, Alabama.

Ex-Rams and Titans coach Jeff Fisher has accepted the USFL Michigan Panthers' head-coaching job.

Out of the coaching game for over five years now, 63-year-old Fisher was connected to an XFL gig but literally called it fake news. It was, indeed, fake news. The XFL is trying to re-start once again, but the USFL got a jump on it. The eight-team league is kicking off later this spring, with every squad playing at Birmingham's august but in-need-of-repairs Legion Field. The 10-week season begins April 16 and lasts through July. Expect many other Fisher types to hop aboard. It is the least they could do to entertain us.

anything on international broadcasts? because that killed any hype in the AAF. at least the XFL had ESPN showing all games on either TV or streaming.

If its not aligned internationally with Youtube or ESPN it wont work, No one will buy a subscription to another service just for spring football.

No idea yet. Maybe the NFLN picks it up?

NFL wont touch it, so they would block NFLn from showing it. and since they have deals with NBC and Fox no point in the NFLN looking at it since they wouldnt get live games.
Amazon would be in the same boat since they are still looking at buying into the NFL and taking over NFLN & NFL Shop.

USFL 2.0 arrives in 2022. And two networks will be broadcasting the games.

NBC will formally announce on Wednesday that an agreement has been reached to televise regular-season and postseason games presented by the USFL.

Fox, which owns the resurrected USFL, will partner with NBC to televise the 43 games to be played by the league. NBC will handle 21, and Fox will televise the other 22.

The 21 NBC games will be televised across NBC, USA Network, and Peacock.

Only the inaugural game has been scheduled so far.

There's an app on phone as well as site to navigate to on computer....DoFU Sports....they usually stream games thru youtube (illegally) and often don't get taken down because they hide the live stream by not titling the video anything football related. But you can find the youtube link easily inside the app, by clicking the link provided.
