i was surprised we didn't nominate to use it this year, being a high quality draft, which to me clearly indicates that the plan all along has been to use it in a trade. if we don't land caddy though then it looks like we've missed the boat

If we'd nominated it this year it would have been pick 16, not a great return.

The club's idea always would have been that particularly with the likely knowledge of Scarlett not playing on beyond this year, that we would finish lower in 2013 than 2012.

Makes sense to me.

That said we may trade it for the right player.

I think by not nominating we are keeping our options open. We can trade it to GC or GWS where the fact that it hasn't been activated should make it more attractive or use it ourselves when in all likelihood we will get better value out of it the longer we wait. We may well miss the first boat but there's another one just as good coming to pick us up if we do.

sure, but the one option we didn't keep open when we kept our options open was the option of actually using the pick. i think i remember wells saying when he opted to use the pick that ultimately got smedts something along the lines of it being better value using it now and getting a player into the system rather than wait four years for a guy who might take another 3-5 years to develop after that.

anyway, with the retirements that were always likely at the end of this year, i was surprised that we didn't opt to use it this year

We were coming off a Premiership so it was never going to be good value. In two years time we could see Corey, Chapman, Hunt, Enright, Johnson and Podsiadly all retired. I think that year (2014) will be the year we bottom out.

I wouldn't mind taking a gamble and having a crack at getting Stringer. If we don't get him consolation could be Vlastuin & Menzel which is again just fine by me.

any chance you can edit the thread title?
I'm not reading a thread with capitals. It shits me.
But, but, but... we hate mods changing the thread titles! ;)

I think they need to use it on someone who is already in the system.
That's the big thing about the compensation. Sure you get picks but you also lose the years of development.

Agreed. Regardless of what the "experts" write, our premiership window is alive and kicking and barring massive injury, we are going to be well in the mix for at least the next few years.

Regardless of if we draft a star with the compo pick, we can't use the pick till the end of next year meaning that player won't come on until at least 2016.

If we get caddy for the compo, he can have an immediate impact.

Don't think so. We will be competitive. Somewhere around the bottom half of the 8 at best. We still lack class in the guts to aid Selwood and leak goals in defense.
Too much of the burden has had to be born by Selwood this year.

At best? I think we can do better.

I actually think the leaking goals mostly came from quick clearances and lack of forward pressure. Varcoe and Menzel improve forward pressure and hopefully a fit Bartel and Caddy can help with clearances.

We were 4 points off fourth with a higher percentage than Collingwood. A tweak or two, and better draw, better run with injuries and more experienced ruck division and we can bridge the gap I reckon.

I'm with you dana, we were only just off the top 4 and realistically only bombed out of the finals due to chasing our tail all season due to a poor start.

We blooded 10 new players & have a handful of stars that didn't get a game due to injury, not to mention a few stars playing with injury.

A good pre season in a few of the younger guys & we won't be in the bottom 8, I have faith we will be right back up there!

A few posts talk of dealing with GWS for picks, may not be the worst thing to happen, our COMPO for a pick that lands menzel2, or another one or two young guns perhaps. Think a lot of these deals will fall close to the end of the trade period, just hope we hold our nerve and don't blink too early. Not sure I'd want to be playing poker with balme, wells and Scott

  ;) :)

Lets say we miss Caddy (which I don't think we will) and he goes to the Roos for pick 14. I would then go to the Suns and offer the compo pick for 14 and 25 as they will more than likely only use 1 pick if that in this draft, if that (having secured Martin).

Alternatively you could do the same with GWS for 12 & 20 but maybe a player or something would need to be thrown in as a sweetener.

All 3 scenarios are reasonable I think. Obviously the compo pick starts to lose its value the longer we hold onto it, particularly if we maintain a position in the top 8. If we were to have a dramatic fall then we are probably best holding it and using it ourselves but I think that is unlikely now over the remaining 2 years of its life.

As an aside to this your suggested GC trade for picks 14 and 25 is interesting. If they happened to accept that in front of a straight trade for Caddy, what does that tell you?!

It all depends on our strategy , how many picks are we planning to use , how Rookies do we elevate , how trade in outs do we do. If we do loose a younger kid Id be happy doing something along those lines , depending on what we got for him.

Sounds good in theory but remember, playing with yourself isn't always as fun as playing with someone else :D
I can only take rejection so many times.

Let's just take our compo pick home and not play with anyone.

Use it next year.
What I like about this approach is that we get to take a proper look at our young blokes who haven't had a decent crack yet.

If we got an extra draft pick this year, then that means an extra player out and I am not sure we necessarily improve, given the risks of an unknown player compared to someone already at the club for a year or so.

Of course, if the club have seen enough and want to get rid of some players, then this doesn't apply!
