Shows how much you know , we won the ******* game !
I agree with this as a Melbourne supporter.

You were by far the better side and played some classy footy at times. Sydney were way more determined to get the win which is an indictment on Melbourne considering we had finals on the line.

Sorry i'm a tad harsh on the young fella , he tries hard to understand . There are still good people at your club who will try ad turn it around. Get Clarko or Bucks

The swans coaches have been highlighting to the players some key basics all season.
Play your role. Young players who deviate from this get dropped. Even guns like Stephens deviated and got dropped.
Tackling, pressure, third efforts, pressure acts etc. great value is placed on disrupting the oppositions control of the ball, enabling turnovers
Forward pressure to keep the ball inside 50 preventing slingshot turnover goals.
Not pretty stuff but effective. Within the team I think Parker led the charge on this, was joined by Rowbottom, then some other young ones joined. The young side is beginning to understand what is expected and what will be rewarded by the coaches. For Melbourne not enough players seem to have this ethos, except perhaps Langdon.

This might explain Papley’s shift in game style and why Reid is so highly rated.

Worth looking at this week’s “Goal of the Week” and see the second and third efforts that led to it, including from Reid.

Good summary Ralphy . I suppose leaders like Parker have to push this Bloods like way to play , especially with blokes like Stewie Maxfield gone , who was the Bloods. What role do you think Kirk has ?

It is interesting, because looking ahead to this sequence of games. I thought it would be a lot of rotation of fringe players and everyone would be getting a game. Because of the congested fixtures, wanting to see uncontracted players and to give experience to young players.

But recently we have selected close to our best side each match. And fringe players who may have been rotated out have been able to keep their position, if they perform their role and have a good game.

I am happy that we are still trying to compete and get some positives out of the end of the season. Though there is no guarantee that will carry through to next year. Last year we finished strongly with close losses and a few wins. But we struggled this season.

But some on hear will have you believe that Melbourne were off , they lost , we didn't win. Shouldn't follow us ! I savoir every win and have for many years.

The exception is Stephens, who played ok and still got dropped.

Also some on here say we paid dearly for L Taylor. Pick 48 or so isn’t that pricy is it? Replace the KFC for some quinoa porridge and we may have another tireless bulldog up forward. He may prove to be very handy as he does have some talent.

Sydney not getting enough credit for the pressure in Q1 - we laid 30 tackles and Melbourne wilted.

Midfield really stood up.

A great sign that finally recruits like Taylor, Clarke, Thurlow are playing their roles.

McInerney could be really something.

The stat that stood out was Blakey ranking 1st for metres gained, Dawson 3rd. We're not going to lose many games with that volume of ball from those two.

As Ralphy indicated (and he has a pretty good source which I won’t reveal), Stephens was asked to play an outside role and kept getting sucked into the inside. That is because instinctively, he is an inside player, but in seniors you have to play the role asked of you.

He has recently been playing inside in the scratchies.

So whilst we sometimes see them as performing OK we are not always aware of what is being asked of them and whether they are following the instructions.

Players like him will bounce back and forward between twos and seniors during their development so they can work on specific things at the slower pace in twos / NEAFL.

We have seen the same with McInerney and he is developing beautifully.

Fair enough. Thanks for the inside/outside role insights. Never considered it.

I don’t intend to accept lectures online from anonymous people for what was ultimately an attempt to entertain.
Still, how much did you lose, on this bet you were telling everyone they’d be “mad” not to place?

(My question is purely an attempt to entertain, of course.)

I lost $100.

It was on the betting slip I posted.

Edit: To be clear, I don’t recommend gambling. Especially to those prone to addiction. I have gambled, in a restricted sense, almost exclusively on horses, for about 25 years. I keep track and am just over $50k ahead over that period. If I hadn’t got the quaddie on Cup Day in 2008 I’d be a long way behind.

The punt last week was for fun. It would have been great (for me) if it had come off but I was genuinely glad to see various comments throughout the game day thread barracking for the result. I’m glad I added a layer of interest. And banter.

And I’m grateful that circumstances combined with some hard work allow me the luxury to play such silly games.

Mate, you are OK. My comment before was tongue in cheek because I don't gamble but I have to help those who have a problem. I wasn't lecturing you but i am also quite sensitive to it.

I'm glad Bruce has his shit together. Millions of Australians don't, and live in abject misery due to gambling.

I love the footy more than almost anything else. I loathe gambling more than almost anything else, and I can quite frankly do without its cancerous appearance on these footy discussion pages.

Agree. I said yesterday that the Dees made Clarke look like Scott Pendlebury. He had so much time and space to operate in there was none of his usual panicked and hurried disposals.

I mean good on him and all, you can only play the opposition in front of you and it was the best I'd ever seen him play so maybe it could lead to bigger and better things for him, but games like yesterday aren't worth reading into too much.

He showed real toughness at times. Received a heavy tackle, leaped up, applied a strong tackle of his own, then gut ran ...

Really good game. Good to see so many positive comments. I've been giving out "likes" like they were candy.

I don't accept the idea that Melbourne lost the game. We won it fair and square in the first half.

I turned off the game at 3:30am figuring I'd watch the 2nd half in the morning. I thought to myself, "even if we go on to lose the game that first half showed me we're on the right tracK, without a doubt".

I loved the pressure, the tactics, some decent skills and the sheer willingness of our players. I loved that our young guys had learned from past losses. They were doing their roles and doing them bloody well.

We were coping in a defence without Rampe and Mills when, with the exception of Lloyd, those two were the last remnants of a defensive core that has served us for a decade.

We had limited experience on the ground through Sinclair, Reid, Parker and Kennedy but our young guys stood up. We asked guys like Florent, Rowbottom, Paps and Clarke to play like seasoned midfielders and they did. We asked our mids to press up and kick goals and we got a great spread of goal-kickers. We applied pressure in our forward 50 to lock the ball in.

We asked Fox to fill in for Rampe and for Sinkers to match it with Gawn. We asked guys like Blakey and Dawson to create havoc with their fast ball movement. We took risks and even when we fluffed it we got the ball back. We looked for the corridor and if we lost the ball we hassled, harrassed and tackled to force Melbourne to cough it up. We got to the contest in numbers even when we were out on our feet.

We stopped Melbourne taking advantage of the wind. We picked our way through traffic against the wind and lowered out eyes going forward. We determined to win the clearances and we moved the ball on quickly at every opportunity. We played like a team of veterans when we were a team of kids, all eager to perform their role to the best of their ability, or better.

We found space where there was none and blocked any space for Melbourne. We suffocated them. Horse had laid out a game plan that could be considered above our abilities as a team but our players rose to the challenge. That was probably the most positive thing for me. We didn't play to our limitations, we ignored them and played above our limitations.

OK rave mostly over. I was pretty chuffed to watch us go on to win the game over my morning coffee.

I really liked the way the players celebrated together afterwards. Hugging each other, cheering, Sammy carried off, Horse beaming. They were really proud of themselves, and so they should be. This was the sort of game that defines teams and bonds them together in the belief that as a team, and as individuals in that team, they can accomplish anything.

Self-belief is an incredible force which can be amplified when the whole team shares that belief. Imagine a couple more years of games like this. This team will be unstoppable.

That's what he does. Beats or nullifies his opponent. But the next Rampe ? When he is playing on their best forward and dashing out of defence hitting targets lace out he may be a just hold a candle to him. I doubt it though. He is very solid though so all good.
I'd like to see Fox use his speed and nimble feet to take the game on like Rampe does. I expect he'll get better as he gains confidence. Rampe took a while to become the player he is today.
