Dandy was in the Hawks' zone, if I recall correctly, and they (bless 'em) decided he wasn't up to scratch. Or that's my memory of things. Yeah, I was also a Collingwood supporter long before Millane, he was just one of the few (perhaps the only one) I can personally remember playing for both clubs. Obviously I want the 'Pies VFL team to do well, but it's really just a reserves team, and (for me) the VFL competition doesn't matter one iota. The VFA, on the other hand, DID matter at the time

Don't recall seeing Millane at dandy to. Be honest. I'd probably "moved on" from the VFA by that stage, around the time they paid massive money to ray biffin. . His younger brother Sean went on to become a bit of a club legend in the later dark years.

Incredibly, 28 years after ceasing to exist, the VFA Umpires still have an annual dinner with this year's guest speaker being Mike Sheahan. Still manage about 60 ex-members which reflects the fantastic bond our umpiring group had back then. Starting to thin out a bit as guys pass on but we'll keep going until there is no one left.

Fair percentage of them running around in the Ammos!!!

Gee, looking at the photo. Some VFA games still got some decent size crowds at times in 1984.
Wonder if people at the time knew VFA footy as they knew it was not long for this world. This must have been the last hurrah before the AFL took over on Sunday's on tv with more than just a game live from SCG every two weeks on a Sunday.
In 1987 with Eagles and Brisbane added it meant virtually even Sunday arvo a live footy game on channel 7 which meant VFA footy on channel 10 lost a lot of it's audience which would eventually follow on with the crowds at games too.

You are on the money. They were still competing with a swans game live every second weekend but once any game on any day became the vfl/afl's mantra, it quickly became the beginning of the end for for decent crowds at the VFA.

Sandy played Port at TBO in the early 1970s and the ground was packed with nearly 14,000 many of the VFA Sunday games got 10,000 plus

Can remember when going to my primary school everyone in my area wanted to be frosty Miller. The redlegs where only up the road and pulled huge crowds and so did our local Federal Football league. That was till Sth Went Nth and played Sundays.

The golden days at Shepley Oval. Orchard, Flaherty, the Shinners brothers, Miller, and a nuggetty little rover/back pocket whos name escapes me
