Re: Round 8: Brisbane Lions v GWS Giants

Anybody else notice the sly jab to the Lions by Sheedy in his post match? To me it was professional/coach speak for "Way to go losers, you beat a bunch of kids, and your stars won't be around forever."
Lol

Sadly he's right :(

Great win & I'm going to have to watch the replay as I was playing chuffer today (not amused)

Great to have a win though - don't look a gift horse in the mouth!

The funny thing is that the only list younger then ours is GWS.

So take that Sheedy, We're just as young as you lot!

So happy with the boys today. It wasn't like the Carlton game against GWS, we played well for 80-90% of the game and dominated. I was hoping for a 30-60 point win but we finally put it on the scoreboard.

God, it'll be hard to move Merrett back after this week. I'm starting to see the merit (pun not intended) in the move now. His ability to get around the ground and use his frame was a revelation. I'm hoping he uses this as a big confidence boost. It's the first time I've ever seen him look like a natural up forward.

Brown was great too. Got better as the game went on.

Rockliff was BOG for me. He also got better as the game went on, a few dinky kicks early but dominated after that. Only small mark against him was that he missed a goal or two he should have slotted, but he's really looking like a goal-kicking mid when he's on. He has had a couple of down games this year but his strong games this season have been some of his best in his career.

Zorko and Green did well in a full run. I think putting Polec as the sub was good, give him a bit of a rest and let him come on and use his run. We didn't need it and he didn't have a lot of impact, but letting him watch and build some hunger/not ruin his body was a good move.

Polkinghorne was bad, bad, bad. The biggest lowpoint. Needs to be dropped and that would be the only team change I'd make. Zorko, Green and Bewick did enough to keep their spots. I wouldn't mind if Bewick was dropped for Crisp, but personally I'd drop Polks for him.

The ruck question is one that's going to come up. Longer ran the game out well, but can he do it against North? Goldstein and Petrie are a strong combo, but Goldstein is out of form. I'd bring in Hudson to give Longer a rest, I don't think we should play two ruckmen if North aren't.

Bring in Crisp or Bartlett or who knows, the reserves were absolutely amazing across the board by all accounts. I wonder if Voss would be tempted to drop Karni and give Ace or Retzlaff a run as third tall. I wouldn't personally, but the thought might cross his mind.

Very happy apart from Polks. Needs to go to the reserves and dominate to get his spot back. Polec back to a full game next week.

And thanks to Lukey Power for saving his first bad game with the Giants for us. Must have been bittersweet for him and Blacky today. Might be the last time they're on an AFL field together.

Loved the way the commentators who had been bagging Merrett before the game turned into an excited Merrett cheer squad during the first quarter :D

Mind you I was feeling the same way so I didn't really mind just was fun to watch to turn around.
Liam Pickering ate a lot of his words. :D

I had a bit of a chuckle when Power took Blacky high... never expected to see that. Was disappointed there weren't more goal-kickers. Too many points. Awesome to see Merrett kick so straight though, and now that he got a few marks I hope he keeps his touch; it was when he was actually taking marks last year that we thought he was in all Australian form. If he can lead smart and actually clunk a few than he will be a more than serviceable forward.

Probably not the right thread to put it ,but I picked 9 this week and only a point off the margin in the Pies game:thumbsu:.
My tipping has been crap all year though.

I am really happy with Longer and so pleased he is holding down the ruck at only 18.
Seems a great prospect and a terrific young man.

Content with today, no complaints.was rapt when Rocky actually managed to get a couple of goals late in the game too.
Awesome effort by Browny and Merrett, good to see Browny getting a bit of touch back..
And nice to see the boys enjoy singing the song:)

The thing I liked the most was the fact that we continued on with the procession in the last quarter.

It's pleasing to see that Longer doesn't get totally mauled in the ruck and puts up a contest for most of the game. He gets pushed around a bit by some of the bigger blokes, but nothing like you'd expect that most first-year rucks would get pushed around.

I really enjoyed my first look at Zorko playing live, as has been said today was probably not a great challenge for him but he looks to me like he belongs in the AFL and he should improve steadily as the season goes on.

I was puzzled by Polec's relegation to sub, although I though it might be because he's had a big 5 weeks or so, but moreso by suggestions that he might be dropped. This is one kid who should be played every week if his fitness allows, I have loved watching his development this year.

And well done to Richy today, he's making some strides towards being an A grade mid in my opinion.

Voss said on the tele that it was basically managing Polec's workload.

Longer for a rising star nomination this week?
This just got me thinking considering no young kid stood up to me this weekend.

Don't want to jump to conclusions but anyone know of another youngster who could ousts Longer's effort today?

Billy Longer: 8 Kicks, 7 Handballs, 3 Marks, 25 Hitouts, 2 Clearances, 3 I50's, 3 Tackles, 81% TOG and 81 Dreamteam points.

Downside really though was 4 clangers and 47% DE.

Pretty sure voss said after the game that it was part of the rest / rotation for young players and that polec is going to play a major part going forward.

What else could Brisbane have done today?

To all the Voss knockers out there, we are beating the sides we should, and are playing the kids. I really don't know what else he can do.

Keep up the great work boys, and success will come soon enough the proper way!!!
not sure I call myself a knocker but what he can do is turn us into a team that can only beat the two newies, a rabble and that's it into a team that is going to beat teams that are equal to us and give teams above a fright and a half

If you think beating GWS is justification well I am speechless

Am I Happy you bet, am I satisfied yet, not on your life!
