not sure I call myself a knocker but what he can do is turn us into a team that can only beat the two newies, a rabble and that's it into a team that is going to beat teams that are equal to us and give teams above a fright and a half

If you think beating GWS is justification well I am speechless

Am I Happy you bet, am I satisfied yet, not on your life!

I think that this is one of those situations where we need to be happy and celebrate a win. After three losses, this wins should be satisfying, even just for tonight. We can then readjust our expectations when they play a team closer to our level in North next week.

Im loving the fact we won - Im happy to say its been S**** year/season/whatever so any wins's a good one.

I want to see us build on that like I know we can - I know we are better than we have shown before today hence my never-ending fustration.

Putting the 7 snaggers aside, Merrett played out of his skin and was clearly BOG in my book.

Pearce Hanley had a great game too. Foot passing skills were as good as I've seen from him and he organised play well from the back half.

Criticism of Redden's disposal skills is fair enough but his overall endeavor and the ferocity of his tackling can't be faulted. Any suggestions that he should be dropped are well wide of the mark IMO.

Rocky reaped the benefit of running hard and playing out the whole game

Longer, Zorko, Karnezis, Bewick, Greene and Golby all showed plenty:thumbsu:

Browny was Browny, and Rich shows really good signs of going to the next level.

Black played his typical professional game but in a way, I was relieved that he didn't have to do all the dirty work for a change

McGrath looked like a man on a mission and I was really happy that he played a really team oriented game today as I thought over the previous 2 or 3 games that he had been guilty of a few selfish acts.

Polks was disappointing again and needs a spell in the twos.

You can only beat what's on the park against you.....I thought the team applied themselves extremely well to the task at hand and never gave the Giants even a sniff.:thumbsu:

SOmething a few people said last week but resting black in the forward line is just blood genius. He's so aware that while not going to burn anyone coming off the hff his quick play on and lace out stab pass to brown was just something else. He also knows where the goals are and is a dam reliable set shot.

With black, rocky and now zorko (could throw in beams too) we have a few good midfielders that can go and rest up forward and be a threat.

I did notice that they were rotating Black and Rocky forward quite a bit today. I may be misremembering but was this mainly when Merrett had gone into the ruck?

Dunno if those coincide or not ZB.

But in the interests of getting the most out of Black for another season or two (hopefully), playing him in the forward half sounds really appealing to me:thumbsu:

Longer for a rising star nomination this week?

Well, no GWS players will win it.

Golby would be more likely for us if eligible. Blease was solid for the Dees too but the team got trashed. Honestly a tough one.

This just got me thinking considering no young kid stood up to me this weekend.

Don't want to jump to conclusions but anyone know of another youngster who could ousts Longer's effort today?

No one jumps to mind, but Greene could get a nomination for weight of numbers over the year so far. I'd suggest Motlop too for the same reason if he hadn't been nominated in week 6.

I do understand this is the frustrating thing for most people. We KNOW we are better than how we are playing, and our results over Melb, GC and GWS only prove that we are a step above them, despite what people say. We have belted every one of them, and that's enough to show we aren't anywhere near them.

How good are we? Who knows, until we can start playing better we won't know, but every game we play, is one more under the belt for many of our young players, and 1 more game played together as a group. Improvement WILL come, it might take awhile, but it will come.

Re: Round 8: Brisbane Lions v GWS Giants

Anybody else notice the sly jab to the Lions by Sheedy in his post match? To me it was professional/coach speak for "Way to go losers, you beat a bunch of kids, and your stars won't be around forever."

Also noticed his quote in today's press:

"Sheedy said his young players were beginning to feel the sting of what has been an arduous campaign in the club's inaugural season.

"We're probably the best-travelled team I've ever known in half a football season in my life," Sheedy said.

"We've played away a hell of a lot"

Gee, Sheeds, didn't you notice in all those years at Essendon that non-Victorian teams travel every second week on average?

By the way, Ian, on a completely unrelated matter, you might want to rethink your signature.

Vossy said on the radio this morning that while he's not content, the result is the 2nd biggest loss GWS has had.

Think the only one bigger was North - and GWS have already played Sydney, Carlton and WCE.

Noticed that Bewick looked pretty shot towards the end of the 4th - was still running, but looked to be heaving in the big ones. Will be interested to see how he pulls up.

Green was a bit the same while on the sidelines, although from what I've seen of him live I reckon he's got a pattern going - he runs like a bull at a gate on ground, then comes off and looks so shot he's going to puke, then as soon as he's back on, you wouldn't know it's the same bloke - bull at a gate again.

Re: Round 8: Brisbane Lions v GWS Giants

To be fair to Sheeds, they've actually only played a total of two games in Sydney in eight rounds.

(And yes, I realise that's due to the (now finished) stadium construction that meant they front-loaded their Canberra games.)

Made me laugh too. He has always been the king of deflection. Bottom line is they weren't that competative.

Yeah, I did see the Manuka games, but realistically they're only a few hours on a bus away from western Sydney.

I thought it was soooo refreshing to see a Victorian whinging about having to travel!

If they (whoever they may be) look at this round’s performance Longer is surely a deserved winner. However if numbers and performance over a period of time is considered Golby has them all covered.

Generally Shifter (Sheehan) is the sole selector of the Rising Star nominations.

I was puzzled by Polec's relegation to sub, although I though it might be because he's had a big 5 weeks or so, but moreso by suggestions that he might be dropped. This is one kid who should be played every week if his fitness allows, I have loved watching his development this year.

Pretty sure voss said after the game that it was part of the rest / rotation for young players and that polec is going to play a major part going forward.

Thanks for that clarification guys, thought that would have to be the explanation.

You could find plenty of things to criticise in yesterday's performance, but I'll take a win on a beautiful day watching with family and friends anytime regardless of the opposition.

I'v got a sneaky suspicion that yesterday (and the lead-up to it) might have engendered some spark/confidence with our guys. I hope I'm right, but the first quarter against North will tell the tale one way or the other.

That is the crux of the matter. Sheedy would not be used to travelling. Clubs like Essendon, Collingwood etc... rarely travel. He is in unfamiliar Non-Victorian mindset.

Hard to take much away from that game to be honest. GWS on the day were as poor a side as I've seen since since fitzroy in 96 or maybe the bears in 91.

Was good to get a win and see better ball use, but the pressure from the opposition wasn't exactly blistering and I can't help think we'll see a return to sub-terrannean handball next week.

They should give it to Blease. That poor team needs something to take out of the first two months.

Briefly looking forward to next week's game, I thought that North were tracking along quite well but I just realized their wins have been against GWS, GC and Geelong. Besides the cats (whom we played in a monsoon scrapfest) we aren't looking too far off the pace of them. If we come out to play we might just surprise them.

Looking forward to being there next sunday!

Longer for a rising star nomination this week?

I hadn't considered that, but he might be a chance. I thought his game was easily better than Golby's.

Longer has to be a real chance this week. No massive standouts and he has rucked on his own the last two and held his own. The ruck really is a position where first year players don't shine and the fact that he has held his own should be recognised. His hit out numbers have been good and 15 possessions this week was good.

Golby also not without a chance. 24 possessions this week and he is owed a nomination after being overlooked in round 4. Amongst all Rising Star eligible players Golby is:

2nd in total marks
2nd in total tackles
3rd in total kicks
4th in total disposals

He is also given a defensive job to do each week otherwise he probably would have higher figures. I think he is due.
