The Lions' defence was barely under pressure all day. The likes of Golby, McGrath and Hanley had lots of cheap touches. I put Hanley in my best but in hindsight I don't believe any of the defenders had a significant impact on the game.
Hanley played a lot on the wing and Ash pushed up the forward line at times.

Golby was solid down back though.

Wanted to post this yesterday but wasn't brave enough. Add Drummond to that list.

I actually found myself getting frustrated by how many cheap possessions Hanley got in the second half. Why does he go missing when we're struggling?

Golby at least seemed to be more active when things weren't going our way in the second quarter, and a lot of his touches were deeper in defence where it's harder to use it well.

A bit of a disturbing trend isn't it?

Having said that, he was possibly our best last week in the first half when we were being belted.

Golby at least seemed to be more active when things weren't going our way in the second quarter, and a lot of his touches were deeper in defence where it's harder to use it well.

Fair call.

Loved the clean hands of Green and Zorko.
That in itself should result in 3 or 4 more goals per game.

Agree, thought both looked at home. But shows you how fast the modern game is because neither looked as quick as they're reputed to be. Banfield looks lots quicker. Maybe it will come with confidence and of course Zorko missed a fair bit of footy early on.

I've never thought of Zorko as quick. I mean, he's not Buchanan-slow but neither is he Banfield-quick.

I'll be guided by you who have seen him live. I was going by his player profile on the club website (it says 'quick and gutsy') and the vision of him in the representative game in WA where he looked pretty quick, at least on the burst.
Perhaps more noticeable to me was when (in the third quarter I think) a GWS player ran the ball out of defence and Green chased him for about 30-40 metres and couldn't make up ground even though the other guy was bouncing it. Very happy with Green's performance, it just surprised me that's all.
I should add that the guy was fairly scooting along.

Zorko looks great, should hold his spot for a while. Your right POBT, he is neither slow or quick, about average.

Hard at the ball and led the team in tackle account? Disposal efficiency above avg also.

He is super-quick between the ears.

I remember for years thinking that Luke Power was very quick. He wasn't - he just knew how to play footy!

Leading the champion data 'pressure acts' stat for us was;
Zorko - 22
Green - 18
Redden - 17
Adcock - 15
Longer - 13
Black - 13

Good to see Zorko and Green leading the list, and Longer also up there too!

28% of Longer's 25 hit outs was to advantage compared to Giles 19% of 16 hit outs (Phillips had 42% of 12 to advantage)

Just on the topic of Banfield....

I'm not convinced that he is actually all that "quick".

In the Collingwood debacle, I made an effort to specifically watch him for a few minutes at a time. Whilst he is undeniably "quick" off the mark, he seems to me to be unable to hold his speed beyond a few seconds nor does he appear capable of sustained acceleration when it's needed.

There was one occasion on the Southern wing(right in front of where I sit) when Dane Swan gathered a loose ball and had a about a meter start(at most) on Banners . Within another 3 meters, Swan had taken off and had left him for dead.

What I found particularly galling (and so did others seated nearby) was how quickly Banfield gave up the ghost, not even bothering to put in a "token" chase.

(This was early in the second quarter, so there was still plenty to play for)

OK, maybe he was playing injured but if so what the hell was he doing out there?

I think you are underestimating how quick Swan is luthor. Being a long term watcher I can tell you he is exceptionally quick and with the engine he has he can sustain that pace longer than the likes of Banfield. Banfield is not the first very quick guy who was unable to run down Swan. He might waddle like a duck but he is much quicker than one.

I;m suprised in the votes not much love for Bewick. I thought he was really good especially early. what did people think of his game?

I said yesterday that I thought he played well. Looking at the stats, he won some contested footy too which is a great sign.

I actually thought he played alright in round 1 this year. I certainly think he's a better footballer than last year.

Needs to do it against good opposition though.

Career best game. Very little pressure from the opposition and he made the most of it.

I was thinking along similar lines, not so much about cheap possession but the effectiveness of disposals. Obviously a lot of our players have very good disposal skills but the deteriorate under prssure. I am a big Golby fan but.

good to see so many are not getting carried away by yesterdays training run

it was a pretty terrible game i.m.o still have ALOT of improvement to go

did anyone else chat to jesse obrien in the lions shop before the game?

really nice guy :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Agree with this. Happy with the win and saw some good signs, especially liked Rich's game and McGrath trying his guts out and Browny but there were a number of players who had those 'cheap touches'

Was interesting to see Voss coaching from the box this week. There has been a lot of discussion about this in Melbourne media during the week (Ex coaches included) as to whether the ground position gives you enough insight as to what is happening across the ground ..so found that interesting he was up in the box this week.
