Deer Park Football Club just withdrew from the WRFL 2020 season.
Yep. Citing health reasons. 🤣🤣🤣.

In all seriousness after several weeks of optimism on the back of some genuine progress, things have gone south very quickly over the last few days. Once again community sport in this state is in doubt. VAFA set to meet on Monday to decide the fate of the 2020 season. I wonder if they will defer the decsion, stick with the original plan of a 25 July start or pull the pin. Looks like every state except Victoria will be playing community football next month.

Government still pushing ahead with easing restrictions

If gyms and cinemas can open then local footy should be able to go ahead

The difference being those business need to open to make money again. Local footy isn’t a business although some of the paid leagues clubs are run like one - if that makes sense

dan Andrews statement from today

“Businesses that were set to open on Monday like gyms, cinemas, theatres and TABs can do so – but again, only with a maximum of 20.

Community sport for kids and non-contact competition for adults can proceed as planned.”

not sure how that last sentence does or doesn’t affect current training 🤔

But they are capping numbers more than they were intending to, all because of some absolutely selfish morons
You mean people having large family gatherings and not following social distancing I assume.

It's an unpopular view but getting hold of Covid is eons more important than a community football comp missing a year.

All these people supposed to be isolating and not. People who are close contacts of confirmed cases holding big family gatherings. People thinking having mass gatherings of 10,000 people is ok. People going to work when sick and not getting teste All of them selfish morons.

Obviously since those early days where VicPol did checks on people and found 30% weren’t home, nothing has changed.

It’s not just football these morons are ruining, they are ruining people’s lives and we will lose more people to the ramifications of the restrictions than we will to the virus itself.

Fact was we had it under control, but some morons ruined it for everyone else. Why can every other state stop this thing but not Victoria?

Oh yeah, you were saying? Exactly 2 weeks after the protests...
It's family gatherings and imports that are the most significant. And that remains the case.

Pleased to see you've moved from the laying it at the feet of protestors - as counterproductive as those protests have been - as it's family gatherings and overseas visitors who are the main concerns.

Anyhoo, this is not a political forum. If we have to miss a year of community football in the circumstances it's a small price to pay.

Not having footy is disappointing but it’s the people whose businesses and livelihoods have been ruined that I feel for. Many were just holding on waiting for the restrictions to be eased and for them this will be hammer blow. Many will never recover. No matter how hard you try, no legislation will prevent mass levels of stupidity, ignorance and selfishness.

As you are a massive lover of all things VAFA , thoughts on playing ?

Hi Bedders,
I’m keen to not go ahead this year. Been consistent on this for a while.
Social distancing can’t be maintained.
Need to worry about far bigger things right now that local footy. Need to stop the spikes and clusters and ensure we don’t get a serious second wave.
Hopefully 2021 can be back to normal. A vaccine would be handy.
Cheers Hipp.

Everything should be done to make sure the season goes ahead, even in its shortened format. If no vaccine is found for 5 years, which is possible, does life as we know it cease until then. What COVID19 has done is expose the number of flawed business models that exist in paid leagues. The 2020 VAFA season should be used as an example of optimism rather than doom. If we stop, we may never restart, unless a vaccine is found, which is no certainty.

You can only hope that others in higher positions than here have that attitude .

Clearly the longer the matter draws out the less likely it is this season will be a goer. Sad for those heavily invested in the caper. Not such a bit deal for us more casual observers. As you say, issues of a much higher order to deal with than community footy at present.
