Have heard the same re Skobs.

Don't want to say "exodus" but might as well.... Exodus..

Apparently old mate has pulled on the purse strings after purchasing sponsoring the premiership last year.

Dont know much about that Chazz, but I believe at OB (and other Clubs for that matter) a 2 year footy scholarship wont necessarily wed you to the school enough to see them finishing their footy career with their school's VAFA Club. Hailybury is a perfect example of that some years back..

If a kid’s good enough to be on a 2 year footy scholarship for yr 11/12, he probably won’t be playing below VFL upon reaching senior ranks.

Tend to disagree. Plenty fall between the cracks. If you dont play in the U18 comp. your chances of getting picked up (in Vic)to play
higher are fairly limited. Luck plays a big part of it.

We lose most of our half good players to Mentone Grammar, Haileybury and Caulfield. Quite a few of them return after their TAC cup careers, but a lot end up at other clubs who pay money.

Spoke with Brian, 1 Res & 3 3rds players to Bentleigh, Jamar to country & 2 retired. Otherwise complete list has returned. D League demise a goldmine with plenty of SKC boys returning full time.

Who would play at Bentleigh? Blokes with small appendages who can’t get a regular reserves game at VAFA B grade level? How embarrassing for those players!

As an aside, it will be interesting to see if Kayne O’Brien gets a regular game in what looks to be a stacked De La midfield. I remember Jay Bruno marching into OX a couple of years ago, what a farce his signing was.

I also heard today that Old Scotch expect to be ‘finals bound’, with a young list and several high flying recruits. It will be interesting to watch their performances week in and week out.

Finally, I hear Old Trinity are confident that their group can take them to another grand final loss, it will be interesting to see how Bernie Dineen goes now that he can’t be a player coach.

Bruno was an overrated journeyman who grossly underestimated how good Premier VAFA was and left with his tail between his legs. He had a history of spitting the dummy well before he landed at OX.

O’Brien is a good country lad and solid citizen who is motivated by a desire to play a better standard and is under no illusions about the quality of the comp. Not sure he will be a starting mid but has not missed a beat in the pre-season and will give himself every chance.

Some handy additions at the Bell this year and while the good money is (quite rightly) on SKOBs, Colls and Blues, expect the bellers to give decent account of themselves. On paper they will start with a much stronger squad than 2017.

Bentleigh wow what a club, why would any normal person play in the shit footy league.

Blues very quiet on the retirement front, you’d have to think they’re in a no win situation. If Their older players play on they’ll play finals, but the long year and pace of finals will see them tipped out in straight sets again.

Also, recruiting a dinosaur in Cordy won’t be the game changer it would have been in the days when Rambo dominated, especially with their treacle slow ruckman, number 1, whose name escapes me right now.

De La recruitment team meeting.
“Person 1: Hey, who was selected for the VAFA tour to Ireland?
Person 2: No idea, why?
Person 1: As you know we never get to games below the ones our seniors play in, let’s grab that list and see what players from lower grades are on it and see if we can recruit them”

Big deal! Good luck to De La Salle and any other team who does it, any one who criticises should do the same next year OR get their club out of D2.

What incentive can clubs offer to players to come to a lower grade? Your final statement is crap.

Opportunity to take a leadership role that isn't available to them in the top tier.
Starting to lose the edge required to keep on top of premier footy but still with plenty to offer at a lower level.
Not wanting to take it so seriously any more.

Lots of reasons.

OTP, You have just described a player who isnt good enough for a top leadership role, lost the edge for Premier footy and not wanting to take it seriously anymore...so he will be just another another "journeyman" in a"journeyman" club....what a perfect fit....sorry.

Was meant to be "pick one of the above" not all three at once. Nevermind.

Why do delisted AFL players play at a lower level?

Why do ex-VFL guys play for suburban clubs?

Not everyone can quit cold turkey at the very top of their game. People get older. It happens, you know.

I thought we were referring more to movement within the VAFA. A Grade player going to D1 team etc.
AFL / VFL to VAFA is a different argument, obviously if you want to keep playing footy and you have been delisted the
only other Associations are all below..

Ha. A top div player going to a lower league is as rare as hens teeth. Poaching upwards on the other hand. No doubt some sort of payment behind it as well....

Players go up and down between the grades all the time.

The B&F winner at Swinburne last year is a 200-game stalwart at DLS with numerous club awards to his name and a brother at the club who is still an entrenched senior player. The 2016 B&F at Ormond is a young bloke who left DLS as he wanted to play senior footy rather than bounce between 1s and 2s. Another good young bloke on the fringe followed him last year for the same reason. 3 or more of the Glen Eira Saints, Gryphons, Wombats or whatever they are now called premiership team of 2016 started their VAFA life at DLS. Parkdale and Old Mentonians are absolutely full of ex St Bedes players. I could go on....

While young blokes wanting to test themselves in the higher grades probably occurs more frequently, players also depart Premier clubs for lower grades. It happens all the time, but no one makes a fuss. It goes both ways and long may it continue.

IMO - When you’re a young footballer, you should want to play as high a grade of footy as you can to test yourself.

When you get older (maybe after finishing uni/apprenticeships) if you aren’t sufficiently central to the club/team plan, moving down a grade or two to have more fun/importance makes complete sense.

You can also bring experience to the lower division club which can add more than just your footballing talent.

Love the Wombats bit, maybe Dingbats might be better

Disagree on Cordy. Watched him a lot last year for Willie. He would have been an absolute nightmare to handle @ Sandringham. Simply too big for many VAFA defenders. Will be super around the grounds too...the uni oval in the wet wont suit too well though.

So which one is it? You contradict yourself in the quoted post.

Footy’s changed in the VAFA, Jamar is miles better than him and couldn’t get a kick, in fact I believe, and I stand corrected, that he played RESERVES finals, not in the seniors?

You don’t need to be stood corrected. The name escapes me.
Very funny.

Pretty simple. He will be great for most of the year but might struggle if the conditions are super sloppy for those middle rounds.

Reckon the talent wasn't the issue for Jamar.

PS pretty sure it has changed much since last September.....SKOB still have the cup don't they.

Jamar was definately not playing the two's because he wasn't good enough to crack the senior side. When you tell the coaching staff at training to "go get your own F*&^#% ball", you can bet that you're probably going to have a spell in the two's or on the sidelines.

Ex-AFL ruckman cracks the sh!ts and walks, ex-AFL coach resigns in disgrace, what next?
