Wowee. Love this. We are attracting some brilliant types who want to play in a great standard comp...best there is outside AFL here...and avoid all the nutbags elsewhere.
More the merrier.
Jarrod will headline quite a string of massive recruits from what I’m hearing.
Go VAFA!!

As long as they don’t all end up at the one club it’s brilliant for the standard of our comp. all hames will be a pleasure to watch

How would that happen? Collegians have brought in a heap of blokes in the last couple of years, so don’t be the pot!

Let’s also remember you were beaten by a team this year with 20 St Kevin’s College boys, hopefully one or two of those lads is drafted so that Waite, BJ and co can get a game.

Have a great off season everybody,

Cheers.

Nice to see you're back to your best Doug. You didn't stay away long!

I wonder if this will prompt HQ to start looking into reviewing the "amateur" status. Looking more like the South Australian interpretation these days...

Doug will never disappear or disappoint here. Too funny.

I think you can engrave the trophy now if they all head down there

How is SBMT going on the recruiting front Vincey?

We're going okay thanks but probably spending more time going through our coaching issues for next year. We almost had a fabulous appointment but alas he ended up taking what I consider to be a pretty hard job at a VFL club.

Yes good points here. Collegians threw absolutely everything at it this year but alas just fell short. Burbury, Hunt, flying Ong back late in the year etc. Fair case to mount that SKOB 2018 was actually a weaker side than SKOB 2017 due to retirements and just how young they were (and certainly weaker in GF when you add Critchley to that list who missed), makes the flag even more impressive looking back.

Collegians will hurt all summer and no doubt put in a heap of work on/off field to challenge again, but hard to avoid fact they came so close twice yet missed on both so will be a big effort mentally to seriously contend again. I hope they do as the rivalry is fantastic for footy. Also wouldn't mind a strong Xavs team again as SKOB and Xavs going at it would be great viewing. If Kanakis doesn't get picked up then a Waite and Kanakis forward line will be hard to stop.

St Bernards looking to do an Old Brighton in 2019, Not looking to be competitive, looking to win. Currently in discussions with two former VFL captains. Watch this space. #Theconspiratorout

First time, long time Gents. Great time of the year, love the "Silly Season". Player movements, coaching appointments and of course speculation aplenty. I've got good word on BJ Goddard heading to TH King in a move that will most certainly shake up the "Ammos" tag in the VAFA. Signed, sealed, just needs to be delivered. Kudos to SKOBs recruiting, having confirmed Waite earlier today. Not giving up on "the rest", B2B2B is incredibly difficult. T's to slide in '19 with VFL clubs sniffing out some talent, Blues to get their act together and Bernies to surprise a few. Stranger things have happened...

According to those in the know Collegians got exactly what they deserved with these two close defeats as penance for the disgusting unfounded rumours regarding Jay Schultz in 2017. #theconspiratorout

Just out of curiosity, anyone know how many games Waite has been suspended for? He'd be close to the magic number (16?) wouldn't he?

I note on the EDFL thread (post #1862 on their 2018 thread for those interested) the comment that Waite is getting free eduction for his kids at SKOBS, and that's what got him over the line from some other clubs offering payments. (Note: 'heard it on a footy thread' is obviously not fact but unsubstantiated rumour, but raises the question regardless -

I would have thought that offering a player's kids a free education would be considered a breach of the 'no payment' rules of the ammo's? It's the same as offering a car, paying rent etc. It's a direct financial inducement.

Same as Stuart Loewe at OH , it's a joke and shouldn't be allowed as suburban clubs can't compete with it.

I would have thought you’d be more intelligent than to start peddling more rumours after the crap that your club made up about Schulz.
Free education, what a ridiculous suggestion, even funnier considering he has a daughter aged one and a son aged two.

Why did Burbury leave OG after they got him a job? Must have been free education for his kids that he doesn’t have. Why did Taylor Hunt go to Collegians not Beaumaris? Ah yes, free education for the kids he will have in 10 years time.

Always find it laughable that those from outside clubs automatically assume that most A grade VAFA clubs could somehow afford to pay players. The Schulz fiasco from last year was just embarrassing.

Even more laughable to assume that any school would help any old boys club to this extent, offering a scholarship to a kid that won't be going through the school for years because his old man played at an old boys club.

Trust me, most VAFA clubs, whether in A grade or D4 have the same issues. Players who won’t pay subs, volunteers who volunteer and then don’t turn up, players who can’t pay subs going overseas mid year, sometimes mid game!

It’s a struggle to pay the affiliation fees every year, pay physio’s, rent, sports tape(what a rort) coaches, pre- season camps, arrange pre season matches, jumpers, shirts, socks, clash uniforms, women’s uniforms and the bigger your club the more it’s compounded.

To then suggest that a club would a) risk a two grade relegation to pay one person? b) have enough money to do it if they were that stupid just beggars belief. Then the grand daddy, arrange free education for a players children? Moronic.

Let’s move on!

I am no SKOBs apologist but when people roll out the old “they are paying his kids school fees” chestnut you know they are talking bulltish. As you mentioned kids, I am assuming multiple children. At about 20 k each a child, that’s 40 k a year. Not sure how many years tuition is alleged to have been covered but lets say the 6 years from yrs 7 – 12. That’s a $240,000 investment in a 36 year old that might give you 1 maybe 2 years. Some people seriously over estimate the relationship between schools and football club.

The same rumour circulated about Stewart Loewe at Old Haileybury years ago. Despite the fact the OHAFC and the school pretty much detested each other some people seriously believed that the tuition for Loewe’s kids (3 or more) was covered as a result him stepping out for the old boys. And this rumour had fees covered from prep to yr 12. Over a million bucks across 13 years ! I mean seriously folks. There may be other methods of getting around the definition of amateur but affiliated schools covering fees is fanciful.

And with all due respect to Jarrad Waite who was a fine player in his day, his body is shot to bits and without an elite medical team working on him through the week to get him up for match day I wonder how many games they might actually get out him.
