The AFL absolutely need to put more efforts into making sure the mental health of their past players is taken care of. The amount of young ex players who have taken their own lives is unacceptable.
If they spend half the amount of time and effort into this than all their other special interests and virtue signalling, maybe we could get on top of this.

I cannot fathom the devastation this poor family has had to deal. I wish them all the strength they need to get through this.

RIP Adam.

I know it gets spoken about for a while when something like this happens and then everybody moves on but I hope this is the one that sparks some change.

This is happening too much, it can’t keep happening.

He was on the news a month ago speaking about his brothers passing and you could tell he was struggling, now this…

RIP Adam and Troy, condolences to the whole Selwood family.

Sadly the statistics are that much higher when having a close family member successfully take their own life for it to happen again in the same family.

Just a massive kick in the guts, feel for the family.

No matter how hard it can be to see, there is always more than one option.

Unfortunately this is true. An old ex gf of mine had 3 brothers. All 3 of them ended their lives, unfortunately each Brother was so badly affected by the other Brother/s ending things.

It's truly heartbreaking stuff. The poor Selwood Family. Hope they can all get through this extremely difficult time.

It seems that unless you are an identical twin it is difficult to understand how the death of one affects the surviving twin. As Adam said in his eulogy for Troy, your twin is more than a sibling; they are your mirror.

The AFL do have things in place for past players. Medical fund that helps players pay for operations and different types of therapy services etc.

It’s pretty hard for any organisation or sporting body to “ get on top “ of suicide situations. It’s not the leagues role and is impossible to prevent unless the player came forward wanting help.

Danny Frawley could’ve got all the support and help he needed ..but chose not to for some reason.

Two adult twins with one following the other only a few months later is pretty rare I’d imagine..

I'm not sure what services the players association offer once you retire and for how long. I would hope assistance is there should they ask for it.

I think we could all get around a mental health round every year to highlight and raise funds for lifeline/mental health services and to get simple RUOK conversations happening ...Spuds game is a start.

AFL Rising Star nomination in 2005
Played in West Coast Eagles’ 2006 AFL Premiership-winning team
Finished third in West Coast’s Club Champion awards in 2007 and 2008
Vice-captain of the Australian team in the 2008 International Rules Series
Played 187 games over 11 seasons with West Coast Eagles before retiring in 2013

Such heartbreaking news. Adam Selwood was a true champion both on and off the field. Sincere sympathies to his loved ones and the entire AFL family during this difficult time.

Words can’t express how horrific this is for the surviving family. Would not wish this type of grief on my worst enemy. Shattering and shocking news. Just teared up watching Cam Mooney breaking down talking about it on Kayo. With the amount of clubs that the Selwood boys have played at and worked for, their social circle would be huge and you’d imagine the tragedy of this will strongly ripple throughout the footy community.

Can only hope the family have all the support around them possible. And maybe (myself included) we should think about this story and stories like it when engaging with others on places like this. Doesn’t hurt to show basic kindness, empathy and respect for people, even if you’re disagreeing with them.

Ive seen the impact this can have on a Family. I cant imagine how this could happen twice to the Selwoods in 3 months. i hope the whole AFL community can wrap themselves around the family. Terrible, terrible thing to happen.

Sad thing is that Adam probably died when Troy died, he just kept walking for 3 more months 😔 😔
Just imagine, giving the eulogy at a twin's funeral and then following him in a matter of months. Sad.

Is there any chance of a CTE link here? The Selwoods were very physical players
Of course there is, and it's probable. It's the family's call of course, but for the sake of other players I hope surgeons are permitted to analyse for the presence of CTE.

It makes you wonder that surely Adam was the top person to be checked on mentally aside from his immediate family.

I’m sure he was. This just goes to show how hard the mental battle truly is. You can have all the support, love and care in the world and still lose the battle.

Absolutely tragic to hear. Can’t imagine what the family, his wife and kids are going through.
