I see in the Death Notices of the Tiser that David Baker, a serviceable ruckman for the Maggies in the early to mid- to late 1980s, has sadly passed away. Anybody have any memories of notable games he played or knew him personally?

David was only young (57yo) so that is a shock to hear that news. Played 64 games for Port and 56 for South. Honest toiler who always gave his all.

That is terrible news only 57 and was teaching at Westboune Park Primary School.
He was at the Magpies between 1982 and 1986 and then moved to South Adelaide I think he wore number 29 and was a real hard working ruckman.
In later years he was an assistant coach at the Magpies

Wasnt an "accident" from what I am told.

Very sad to hear was a great man

His old man had a plastics extrusion company that rented space in the factory where I worked prior to going into the insurance game, was a fanatical Port man. David came in a few times, he wasn't overtly tall, but he was an enormous man, along the same sort of build as Norwood & Woodville man,

FORMER Port Adelaide and South Adelaide ruckman David Baker has died, aged 57.
Baker, who was initially recruited by the Magpies from Woodville, played a total of 120 SANFL games for a return of 17 goals.
Baker played 64 games for Port Adelaide from 1982-86, then 56 for South Adelaide from 1987-90.
He remained involved in the game after his playing days and was an assistant coach of the Goodwood Saints’ 1997 Division 1 premiership in the amateurs.

My first recollection of David Baker was that he turned up late for what would have been his very first league game at Alberton, and Jack Cahill pulled him out of the team.
From memory he wasn't selected for either the league or magoos the following week, and didn't make his league debut for another 3 or 4 weeks.

RIP Bakes, 57 is way too young.
