I don't think it is a coincidence that since Dennis retired, my desire it watching football waned dramatically.

He was the best, that isn't a dispute, but he was also the last caller that called the game unbiased, concentrated on the play happening instead of which private school a player went to or back slapping from stories of yesteryear, and knew the nuances of peaks/troughs in play and didn't just scream down the mic for 2 hours straight.

I miss him. I am sure anyone who watches football on the telly does.
Yep, and even though at times Bruce could annoy me I still wish we could get them both as a combo again over literally everyone that calls now.

I don't think I found out he was a dogs supporter till his final season of calling. There'd be no way of ever picking that through his commentary.

Sad news indeed. Dennis Cometti had a truly magnificent speaking voice and a sense of humour and wit to go with it.

Dennis Cometti ranks with the doyens of sport commentators and I rate him with the likes of Murray Walker and Phil Liggett.

The greatest AFL commentator of all time and quite possibly the greatest Australian sports commentator period. Unbiased, consistent, charismatic, and most of all, entertaining.

There are so many contenders for my favorite Cometti quotes, but there's something I find particularly special about the time he said "This is breathtaking!" after we kicked the first seven goals of the 2014 Elimination final.

Ask and ye shall receive…. Link set for THAT goal.

The voice and verbiage of Dennis Cometti on TV was the winter equal of Alan McGilvray’s immaculate summer commentary on the radio. The two of them could without effort delightfully massage the listener’s eardrum; the final siren or the final ball always came much too soon.

They are too few and far-between, these immortals of the world of sport’s spoken word.

Others, such as those with whom we are left, are shown up as not only also-rans but also undeserving to be anywhere near a microphone.

Loved the 2013 Monfries Showdown win when Cometti was given some information that Wingard had turned 20 that week.
Last quarter, Wingard lining up for his 4th and Cometti comes out with “we got some incorrect information, it was not Wingard’s 20th, his family can now relax”.
Only to be followed by Wingard taking the final mark to kick his 5th, to which Cometti bellows out “It IS his birthday!”
