I'm not much of a basketball fan, but I grew up in Launceston and was living there when Casino City won the NBL title in 1981. So even I was a basketball fan then.....:)

Ian Davies was a big part of that title, and was one of Australia's great basketballers. And he has sadly passed away at the awfully young age of 57. :(

I saw Ian play every home game for Casino City in 1980 and 81 as a 14-16 year old, we travelled 120ks for each home game from Ulverstone, he also played for Burnie in the North West Basketball Union (Tas) in those years, so when Burnie played Ulverstone, I hated him. He had that slightly ungainly, from behind the head, jump shot, but could hit them from any angle and any distance. He was a scoring machine. So many great memories, RIP.

Sad news. Looked like such a regular dude but a beautifully pure shooter. Like so many Aussies from that era really was world class and realistically could have played a role in the NBA draining threes.
