Condolances guys, must be terrible for the family to not only have lost a loved one, but to have a media/public interest aspect to juggle as well.
I'm sure there will be plenty of support for the family.

Absolutely shocked and saddened to hear this news, I feel physically Isick to the stomach...thinking of you all, stick together and support one another. No-one should have to go through this - a tragedy :(

Meanwhile, on our club's website, in one of those unintended and unfortunate coincidences, the center headline informs us someone believed to be a Port player has died in Vegas, while the left hand column, scrolls past a headline reading "Kane's Legacy". Looking after people comes first for sure, and then this needs to be edited as soon as possible.

Can't put into words how tragic this is.
Sincerest condolences go out to his family, his friends, team-mates, the Port Adelaide Football club and the Collingwood Football Club, and anybody that had anything to do with him throughout his life.

Such a young life, taken far too soon.
R.I.P.

Every footy fan has lost a member of their extended family.

Sincerest condolences to all family and friends and everyone involved at Port and Collingwood.

Wow, I'm just stunned by the news. I know people who were mates with him and was a top fella from all reports. My heart goes out to his family, his girlfriend, all his mates, the PAFC and the CFC. I know he had some great mates at the pies and this news will be terrible to take. It might fire them up to do it for John over the next few weeks but this just puts into perspective, that as much as we love this great game, it is at the end of the day, just a game.

R.I.P John McCarthy.

My sincere condolences to his family, The Port Adelaide FC, Collingwood FC and anyone affected by this tragedy. Sickens me to see a young man taken so long before his time. Seems to be nothing more than a tragic accident that emphasises the fragility of life and that no one is immortal. RIP John McCarthy...

I'm gutted for the loss of a young life, his family, loved ones, club, friends, and supporters.

Please accept my condolenses.

So sorry to hear this news. Just unbelievable.

Reminded me of 2002 when news started filtering through about the Bali Bombing that a young Sturt bloke had been killed, others injured. We were coming off a flag a week prior but I can still remember the empty, hollow feeling. I had missed the grand final and was just waiting for an opportunity to sit down and watch it - then that happened and I never felt like it. Still haven't seen the game.

I feel as well for the players who were with him on the trip - such a traumatic experience for them as well. One of my mates played a bit for Richmond and was with Polak when he got struck by that tram. It really affected him.

A couple of really good posts in here about the impact this tragedy may have on the Port players. Highlighting just how fortunate they are to be fit, healthy and playing AFL football. A reminder never to take it for granted.

RIP

Shocking news - always gave 100% and seemed to be turning his career around. He always had a sparkle in his eyes and will be sorely missed. And only 22.
