:(

terrible hearing about this, specifically the circumstances...such a wonderful week of finals action and then this.

I kid you not...any joy I had from my club's brilliant finals win has just been sapped out of me upon hearing this news.

I love my club and my club is my priority but when push comes to shove, we are one and we are many...and for many of us...the AFL community is family

I wouldn't wish this upon anyone or any club...and my condolences go to player x's family, friends, teammates and coaches...as well as all supporters of Port Adelaide Football Club

RIP

i would like very much for him to be remembered in the next pies vs power clash. try to show his family what an impact he had on the guys at both clubs, from reports he was much loved. ild seen him out with a couple of the fellas and he already looked quite close to a couple of them, just seemed to fit in with the lads that kind of guy. gee i feel for his partner, she must be suffering worst of all, very few of us can accurately imagine what it would be like to lose your partner especially so suddenly. best wishes to her most of all, no one should have to cope with that. its too sad.

Like somebody else said, I really feel for the players that are/were with him at the time.

Not only do they have to go through this without their families etc to support them, they will have a throng of media at the airport as they arrive back in Australia.

I'm guessing he was intoxicated at the time as well... wait for the shock to die down a little and all the media will jump on how irresponsible footy trips are and how many injuries and stupid things are done. Certainly not going to get easier for his family/loved ones over the following weeks.

Condolances to J-Mac's family and also his second family-the Port Adelaide Footbal Club. A great young man who was respected by many. Hope all the footy community gets behind Port and its players at this sad time.:(

I am gutted as we knew him personally. A great young man who had so much more to give. My heart breaks for all of you and all of us. I still cannot believe we will not see his face again as he dashes around the footy fields playing the game he treasured so much. Deepest sympathies to his family and anyone who knew him.
R.I.P. Johnny MAC.....

It's times like these that we should all take stock of how lucky we are to be here and to have our loved ones. I feel horrible for hearing this news but i know this is so much worse for those that were directly touched by JMac, to those people, and the Port Adelaide FC, we all feel for you and pray for you. Football is a tough and sometime unforgiving game, but in the end it IS just game, it's important to remember that we are all on the same team in life, together we fall, together we get back up and keep going, but never do we forget those we had to leave behind.

RIP

One minute I was watching him have a laugh with Matt Thomas on the Port B&F youtube presentation and introducing his girlfriend, and the next, he is gone. Shocking news, I am devestated for all who know him.

This. Hope they don't completely miss the point of what happened today. Wrong place, wrong time. Extraordinarily awful and unfortunate circumstances.

I don't know what to say. Johnny Mac was one of the players I was just so damn syked to see go around next year under a decent coach, get the most out of his ability and show why he was so highly rated. Now he's just gone.

RIP legend, you'll never be forgotten.

All he had to do was work on his foot skills and he would have been a key player for us for 7-8 years. Had pace, courage, endurance, ball winning ability. Absolutely ****ing tragic.

Shattering news

We as supporters often get guilty of treating players like commodities and forget the human aspect of it all.

Thoughts go out to his family, team mates and everyone associated with the PAFC. Hopefully the other clubs and the AFL show their respects appropriately during the finals series.

I recently have been pumped up for next year. Plenty of young talent on our list and it just seemed like it was our time. It's so easy to do that in footy. If a bad year rolls around, we can always just hope that next year will roll around. John doesn't have next year. It really puts it all into perspective.

I think I'm going to retire from my daily duties and just go on a little walk, take in the beautiful sunshine that today has brought us.

I might mow the lawn when I get back.

Shocking news to hear today.

What I wanted to add was that I find it confused as when I stayed at Flamingo last year, there was no balcony's that you could actually stand out and enjoy the 'strip'. Just a little confused as to what has been reported.

Yeah.

Saw him wandering around and addressing us at the Captain's Club thing with REH earlier in the year and while he was an affable and humourous bloke, you tend to pour his entire identity into a Port polo or guernsey.

At the end of the day, we've lost a Port Adelaide person who we have a natural connection to by allegiance, but right now there are scores of his friends, relatives and everyday contacts who are dealing with the realisation they've lost a bright young man who they knew simply by who he was and not by what he did and should've had decades to come.

Just an appalling thing to happen.

Your 2nd and 3rd paragraphs are spot on tribey.

As I have been reading this thread and becoming sadder and sadder, my memory goes back to this function that tribey and I attended representing The Port Board and big footy at the start of the season. It was an intimate event with half the Captain Club's sponsors attending, maybe 30 people, plus John, Hamish, Surj and Dom, Shaun Rehn, I think Daniel Healy and 4 or 5 other club officials. I feel lucky to have seen John up so close in person.

I briefly spoke to John and Shaun Rehn in the line up for food, but it was Shaun's interview with John that will remain in my mind. He talked about his determination to succeed at Port, a little surprised that we beat Richmond to pick him up, wanting to become a part of our rebuild and climb up the ladder, his humour with the other boys there, the beard and the superstition about it and not shaving it off, but especially about having no left foot - which I bagged him about during the year on here - but by the end he was kicking the ball a couple of times a game on his left - his girfriend's music career, being a pseduo booking agent for her that night, and explained how he had been warmly welcomed by the club, teammates and supporters and that he was enjoying his time here and felt at home.

I left that night thinking John would be part of this club for many years if he could deliver on what he talked about and continued to perform like he had done so in the preseason games. Unfortunately this tradegy will mean that down the track we remember him for this tragic event moreso than his gutsy deeds on the field.

I feel for his parents having to jump on a plane and are in the air for all those hours grieving over their son, let alone having to bring his body home.

RIP John McCarthy.
