......

Matt Walker and Cathi Miller are two American opticians from Iowa who were in Las Vegas for a convention and were staying in the Flamingo Hotel.

They were waiting for an airport shuttle outside the casino when they heard a rustling in a palm tree and turned around in time to see McCarthy plummet to the ground.

"I kinda heard some rustling in a tree up above, and at that point I caught a glimpse of something flying," Mr Walker told news.com.au.

"It was horrible, absolutely horrible. I can’t get over the sound. It sounded like wet sandbags hitting really hard, a really crisp thud.

"You expect someone to be screaming on the way down, but there was not a noise at all, nothing in the way of any human vocalisation."

Mr Walker's account is consistent with the initial findings of the Clark County coroner's office which said it appeared a disoriented McCarthy had tried to jump to the palm tree and misjudged the distance to the ground.

The timeframe today has John captured on CCTV entering the Flamingo at 5.30am and going straight to the roof (where he was captured on CCTV again contradicting early reports) and trying to jump to the palm tree.

Maybe he went to the roof to get his bearings, the door shut and locked behind him so he thought he could get down via the tree. Just a horrible tragic miscalculation.

The phone calls with Dani and the Port player are believed to be before he entered the Flamingo.

My Theory is he was lost and went to the roof to see if he could find the big guitar that is on the roof of the Hard Rock Hotel, then head in that direction.

Is the only thing I can think of.

The video of Dom has started a new course of tears from me. Just too tragic for words.
What I will say and to reiterate my late post on this matter, the Port family will rally round the players and they have done that. My understanding is that the club has organised something every day for the players for the next two weeks and alternating at people's houses. I think Jay's one day, Dom's etc etc, to ensure there are people & counsellors with them at all times.
It truly does show what a "club" Port Adelaide is and while tragic this matter is (& there is no more tragic than this), then I hope the interstate clubs, and media alike (include the horrible local rag The Advertiser) come to realise what Port tradition & family is.
I am a great believer that you can tell more about people and organisations by the way they handle adversity than by when they handle the good times.
I am proud to be a Port person and I have been so impressed by the way the club has handled this, (KT has been incredible) and my hat comes off to Peter Rhodes. I have always had some doubts about Mr. Rhodes, but you have come into the breach and it would have not been an easy time.
As for John (I continue to shed tears unabated), I quoted W.H. Auden the last time, this time I will finish with Mr. Shakespeare from Hamlet: “Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince; And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

About 1.5 seconds by my calculation.
I'd advise against reading too much into media stories such as 'medics didn't start cpr for 7 minutes' etc and starting the inevitable blame game. The easiest explanation is that he had a pulse for several minutes.

I reckon the flavour of this great, emotional and thoughtful thread is going off topic now.

It would be better if posts on this tangent are in another thread.

Farewell J-Mac, I will always remember that infectious smile - you showed a great love of the game and your team mates.

All the best to those close to him and those like myself who never met him but feel the sorrow of the loss of one of our boys.

I'm going to pay my respects tomorrow and have lunch with the other half at the club.

It still hurts when I think about Danni, his Family and of coarse the players and friends. If it were Port Adelaide playing in a final this weekend and we had a minute silence I think there would need to be a Kleenex tissue truck parked out the front of Aami stadium.

Saw that Fox Footy Johnny Mac tribute with that Follow the Sun song. They showed him receiving his guernsey from what looked a slim down Greg Phillips. Went looking for the guernsey presentation video on PTV to confirm it was Phillips. It's been taken down but I did find this thread about the 4 greats who did the 4 presentations before the St Kilda game.
