Toast Vale Kevin "Cowboy" Neale

One of the funniest things I have seen on a footy field was at Moorabbin, must have been around 73 or 74. I was in the forward pocket at the southern end and Saints were playing Melbourne. At this stage of the game the Saints forward half was completely empty except for two players in the goal square - Cowboy Neale and Ray Biffen. At that stage of their careers both were sporting reasonable pot bellies.

Anyway, against all the play, some Saints player hacks a kick off about the wing toward our forward flank/pocket. Cowboy and Biff looked at each other, realised they were closest, sort of did a "f#ck it" shrug and took off in a two man race for the ball. Race is a very kind word. Cowboy had a weird running style, his head bobbed up and down fiercely when he ran and Biff sort of lolled violently from side to side. Whole crowd was laughing.

They "raced" about 60 metres, just the two of them. Someone from upfield actually beat them to the ball and both of them looked like they needed a stretcher when they pulled up. Never left the goal square for the rest of the day.

The Saints only true golden era.

Vale.
