Very surprising news. Vale, Peter Roebuck. I echo the sentiments of many others, I didn't always agree with his writing but always appreciated his honesty & integrity in saying it how he saw it and not taking the boring, middle road many sports writers take. Was a good commentator & journalist - seemed to be a fairly unusual person but very good at what he did. Rest in Peace.

He's not one of my favourite cricket writers, but he did a solid job. It's a sad way to go, alone in your hotel room in a foreign county.

Awful news. I was a fan of his but, he lost me for a couple of months after that Sydney debacle, I moved on from that soon after though. I always respected him as a cricket writer.
I also hope that the media gives his family space to grieve. I worried about depression for him just because he came across as a bit of a loner and I read his book 'Sometimes I Forgot To Laugh", so I hope that he knew how much people valued his contributions on the wireless and in the newspapers if that is how he went.

Very sad.

Cant believe the short memories of some on here, particularly regarding the bile Roebuck spewed during that 06/07 Australia V India series....

Yeah mass public eulogising whenever a celebrity dies always leaves me a little creeped out.

To be honest I grew to really dislike him for some of the stuff he wrote during that series. His coverage of the Andrew Symonds monkey incident was some of the most pathetically biased and unprofessional (and frankly, racist) sports journalism I've ever read... that "intemperate Sikh warrior and family man" quote about Harbhajan is etched on my brain.

Content aside, he could certainly construct eloquent prose, and he had one of those iconic ABC Grandstand commentary voices.

Not going to pretend I loved the bloke now that he's passed on. That is just insincere. Condolences to his family. Sounds as though he was a slightly troubled soul.

Evidently a suicide.

Cops are investigating some sort of incident.

Must have been something big for him to top himself.

Couldn't stand the man for a number of reasons, that doesn't change because he died. TBD summed it up for me perfectly. Will be very interesting to see the story unfold.

Same here, haven't really read his stuff since he became so hysterical around the Sydney test.

Very sad news. Like most I greatly disagreed with a lot of his stuff but he was still a good writer and will be missed.

..and he did sign off with 'a lot can happen in a week', how eerily prophetic...

Sad news, hopefully the rumour mill doesn't go into overdrive and the truth is told soon.

Actually SA was his country. He mainly lived there and loved it. Doesn't look like he met with foul play.

He polarised opinions but always wrote with elegance.

that's life deal with it.

anytime there is some sort of controversy over a death; people will speculate.

Until the truth comes out.

His forceful manner was frequently abrasive, but his opinions were rarely dull. A talented man. RIP.

Shocked. Besides being a good writer on cricket he could play the game at a high level as well.

http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/content/player/19456.html

Captained England 'A' I believe (and lost to Netherlands in a one day game I think).

Played 335 1st class matches.

Played for Somerset along side Ian Botham and Viv Richards.

Scored a 100 against the touring Australians in a county match, when Australia was near the top of their game. From memory I think the English selectors gave him some consideration to play for England after that match.

For those people who think it's okay to smear Roebuck's name or indulge in gossip about the manner of his death, just imagine if he was a close family member like a father or uncle.

He was much liked and respected amongst his colleagues at The Age.
My condolences to his family and friends, he will be missed.

Perhaps the reason that people are rarely criticised after their death is because their detractors have decency enough to withhold their opinions while others are expressing their regrets. Love him or hate him, Roebuck spoke his mind and was a great proponent of the game.
RIP
