http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/cricket/cricket-commentator-peter-roebuck-preferred-death-to-dishonour-after-alleged-sexual-assault-complaint-by-facebook-friend/story-e6frey50-1226194982138

This article sheds some light on those final moments including comments from Jim Maxwell who was there just before the end.

It's all just such a bizarre tragedy. Did he prefer death to facing up to this alleged crime? The student pressing charges was 26, hardly a boy. The crime of indecent assault, as disturbing and serious as it is, there are a lot worse. But it's hard to draw any other conclusion.

So was he worried more events would come to light?

Obviously I just can't possibly relate to his state of mind at the time, to warrant choosing such an option.

Who knows, maybe he was just trying to do a runner and forgot which floor he was on....

I was furious with one P Roebuck at the time for his grossly one-eyed take on that whole Indian summer but I'm disappointed to hear the spiteful vitriol on here and elsewhere all but condemning him to death without established facts

Sums up my thoughts.

I can't believe that some people can't separate an annoying occurrence in a sport/hobby several years ago from what now amounts to a tragic loss of life, however you look at it

The fact that I raged at his coverage at the time does not blind me to his strengths as a cricket analyst and neither does all the sordid innuendo which many are indulging in after his death

I'll wait until the facts are sorted and verified before I make any moral judgements, if i make any at all

It's a sad reflection on the anonymously nasty keyboard warrior culture that small and petty minds seek to make themselves feel bigger by making sweeping and ill-considered statements with no understanding of or respect for the presumption of innocence or a level of respect for the dead or their loved ones

I agree there's no need to try to deify him but there's no excuse either for demonising him with unproven supposition and slander...shame on you, you dirty little grubs

I hope anyone reading this thread feeling helpless or without hope does not make the same decision as Peter did - there are other avenues and help available for anyone considering hurting themselves or others

Life is precious, rest in peace Peter Roebuck

Excellent post!!!!

Shame about him, some people never learn to deal with themselves.

The odd thing about hearing the Jim Maxwell interview on ABC news was the way he described the final call Roebuck made to him sounded in many ways the same tone of voice Maxwell uses for his commentary at times

"He made a desperate lunging dive back into his crease... stretching.... despairing"

It's been remarked that Roebuck's commentary box voice was the same as his street voice.

The guy was a magician with words and loved reading his articles...But if the stories are true he is just another scumbag shielded by popularity and being a so called professor of the game:thumbsd:
I won't shed any tear's for a rock spider,No matter how famous he is :thumbsd::thumbsd::thumbsd:

You don't jump out of the 6th story floor of a hotel room if you're innocent

You clearly are completely ignorant about the subject of suicide.

It's entirely possible that his suicide was not confirmation of his guilt.

Haha yea, entirely possible it was, too ;)
Of course it is, I'm not denying that.

I'm sick of people implying that the fact that he allegedly committed suicide is absolute proof of guilt. Because it isn't.

I pretty much agree with everything you say King E but even for the sake of clarity age doesn't matter when the allegation is indecent assault.
Beth, would be much worse if the people in question were kids, IMO.

As you know, I'm not defending him, but he wasn't a pedo.

Age does matter when someone is labelling Roebuck a rock spider.

Ol Pete jumped, my dear boy.

He had something to hide. So he did the best thing he thought he could do to hide it. Jump.

or was it another death like Hansie Cronie and Bob Woolmer.

Did Peter know something about some rigged cricket game and was just about to release it..

and thus was murdered.

To keep the Silence.

Was there ever any official comment/reflections from Ian Botham after Roebuck's death?

Was there ever any official comment/reflections from Ian Botham after Roebuck's death?

Yeah there was and it wasn't nice so best leave it at that. I like Botham to a point, but he's bloody minded on some issues and holds grudges. Roebuck wasn't behind his shafting (poor use of the term) but Botham played the man not the ball until the bitter end and even after that. He used the subsequent revelations that Roebuck was most likely gay (surprise surprise) to justify his position.
