News Vale Tony Haenen

Sad news for the old South supporters, with the passing of Tony Haenen at the age of 69. He played just under 100 games for South, finishing in 1971.

I am posting this because I am an old North Launceston supporter. I was a kid growing up in Launceston and supporting the (then) Robins. We were crap from 69 to 71, winning probably a dozen games in those three years.

In 1972 North appointed a star VFL recruit as coach - Tony Haenen. He coached the Robins from 72 to 74, not winning a flag unfortunately, but turning the club around and setting the platform for considerable success under the coaching of another VFL recruit - Peter Daniel.

I remember him as a tough but fair competitor and a really strong key position player.

Tony Haenen then went back to Melbourne in 1975 and played with Port Melbourne for a number of years.
