Ok straight to the point...
Should he get a game this weekend?
I think so.

Frankly I'll be very surprised if he doesn't play.

Given Hart is out and the fact we need a bit more run from defense I think Van Berlo will be preferred to Tourney who may need a run in the SANFL.

The Count's pre-season was exemplary and he deserves a game sooner rather than later. I wouldn't say no to him playing this week.

Yes. As we all know, according to the PS-time trials and other assorted tests he is the fittest player in the club, which means he can run with someone all day or at the very least be a handy player in bursts off the bench, especially when players are tiring in the third and finals quarters. He would also take some pressure off of Mattner and Shirley who are toiling manfully but can't be expected to be at the top of their games as stoppers for each and every minute of every game.

He would be bursting out of his skin to have a crack, and what better occasion to make a debut than a home Showdown?

I've got to agree with jack. ;)

I've been one of the greatest gees for Van Berlo since early January - I really rate this lad. I think he has a big career ahead of him.

And that's where it is IMO. Ahead of him, but not quite now. 1 SANFL career game is not quite the preparation for a newbie to showdowns, the finals we have during the year.

Another few weeks under his belt will help him no end to make a successful entry to his AFL career.

That's just my opinion on it.

Oh, and jack's! :D

So you'd prefer to persevere with a certain duo who have come in for a hiding in the aftermath of Sunday's win, rather than blood the new guy who has more jets than the USS Onepressovabuttonandyurfuct?

I just don't want to kill the kid, DT.

I really rate him and it's a huge ask for an untried 18 year old to come into a showdown.

Let the less valuable ones fight out the slugfest, and bring him in against Richmond or Hawthorn.

Fair points those. There's also the issue of what's better for him, a full run in the SANFL or a cameo in the Showdown that might see him manage half an hour all-up.

yes he would be killed in a showdown its almost guaranteed.

Firstly though we need to get some time into our 20-1yr olds like bock, jericho and schuback to see if they warrant staying on the list. I'm all for him coming in very soon though. Basically replace the bode, doughty, skipworth types with these guys, sooner rather than later. It will never happen though, NC has a soft spot for some of them.

oh and wats wrong with my opinion?

Saw him play up at Noarlunga in round 1 SANFL

Looked accomplished for his age and mature in body size. I dont know if hel be brought in - I think he is good enough, but maybe not in a showdown.

You got plenty of time - why rush for round 3 ?

I am in the NO camp. I can see the points made and if we were playing St Kilda etc I would be the first to say yes..but not against Port. I know the old lines ''he has to find out what its like'' "" afl is tough he better get used to it''

But we have talked about mental capabilities a lot in the last few weeks.. and while I think he would be mentally ready , I am not sure a beating at the hands of Port is what he needs to remember as his first game.

But if he is named I will be excited to see him perform

As much as want to blood young players this is a tough 1st game Pity we didn't give him his 1st run last week..

I would have dropped both Doughty & Skipworth anyway, based on their ******** poor efforts on Sunday so I think there is room for both Torney & VB (& Meesen :)).

I vote play VB at 1/2 forward / wing on Dew. That way we know he wont cop any physical contact & can slip under Port's guard by hiding behind Dew's enormous arse.

What the hell is this I am reading here?!? Why can't VB debut against Port? Why should anyone at our club be scared of Port? This is about the softest thing I have ever read on these pages.

Why you think that Port is such a juggernaut that they afford special treatment? Are you guys suggesting that we simply forfeit the game so that our young players don't get hurt? Honestly, they're not that tough!

I say send out VB and then after we roll Port send him in as back-up for Roo in the Ramsgate car park!

I agree, I think the showdown is a perfect gam for him to debut. Massive atmosphere, biggest game in this city apart from finals, big media build-up, all of Australia watching. There's no point giving him a comfy ride into the AFL because realistically that's not what it's like. I think this would be the ideal situation for him personally, who wouldn't want to debut in a Showdown? Dermie debuted in a final for crying out loud and it didn't ruin him.

how is his SANFL form???

He's played one SANFL game because South had the bye in round 2.

I watched that one game on TV in round 1. VB played in defence on Scott Stevens. Stevens got a little bit of it in the first quarter but was very quiet for most of the game. VB didn't get a lot of touches himself and some of the touches he did get were scrambled kicks or just jammed on the boot. He took a couple of nice marks, even one that could almost be decribed as a pack mark which surprised me a bit. Watching VB he didn't seem all that impressive, except for the fact that his opponent was pretty much shut out of the game. And that is the number one objective of a defender afterall.

The commentators seemed quite impressed with his game on Stevens but whether he was well held or just bad I am not really sure from watching it on TV. Van Berlo always seemed to be right with his opponent so in all possibility it was a good defensive performance from Nathan.

Also, I agree with Pext's comment. Who cares that we're playing Port Adelaide? You don't not pick someone because we are playing them and you want to protect them. That's a ridiculous attitude in my opinion.

I have no problem with him getting selected this week.
