What the hell is this I am reading here?!? Why can't VB debut against Port? Why should anyone at our club be scared of Port? This is about the softest thing I have ever read on these pages.
Why you think that Port is such a juggernaut that they afford special treatment? Are you guys suggesting that we simply forfeit the game so that our young players don't get hurt? Honestly, they're not that tough!

I say send out VB and then after we roll Port send him in as back-up for Roo in the Ramsgate car park!

It's about the occasion not the opposition.

first post around here for a while...

I would say No, whilst the kid is the stand out of our latest batch of draftees that we have he doesnt deserve a go yet. There is no point handing him a game, he has to earn, he did have a great pre season and played reasonably well in pre season games BUT i watched him at Noarlunga the other weekend and especially to start with he struggled with the pace of the SANFL game and his disposal was rushed. I think he needs to have a few solid performances in the SANFL and let him get use to the pace of that before rushing him into the AFL, in saying all that though it wouldnt suprise me if we played him and id be wrapped for him to play, its always exciting when a new player debuts for us.

The sooner we start approaching the showdowns as just another game instead of this pseudo final bullsh1t we might actually improve our record. If the kid is up to AFL, which popular opinion says he is, then he should play. Seriously some of this PAF, AFC rivalry stuff is becomming a bit of a joke. They are one of 15 teams that we should be wanting to beat. Often the most physical espect of the showdowns is in the stands, not on the field.

Long time no hear RD. Where you wheelie bin???

Pressure builds diamonds as they say, I would play him this week and see how he goes. If he stands up and plays well he will know what it is like to place against the best after all they are the premier from last season and in theory it will only get easier but if he plays terrible he can go back to the SANFL and work on a few things but to play him against Richmond or the Hawks (no disrespect) the club wont know if he can stand up to finals pressure that a quality side like Port/Brisbane/ St Kilda could put him under, if he plays badly against a lower side that could do more harm than good to his confidence.

Play him against Port this week when the pressure will be on and let see how he goes, play him on a half back flank, give him a few games to find his feet and then put him as a tagger so he fully understands what AFL is all about.

Welcome back RD. Long time, no read!

I agree with pext's thoughts. While it is a showdown, that shouldn't stop us from blooding youngsters when we have the opportunity. Jericho played his third (or fourth) game against Port last year and performed very well, so why not the Count?

However, it will not anger me if Van Berlo doesn't play. He will play games this season and therefore there's not point in rushing him. But, a Showdown should not be different to any other game in terms of blooding kids. In fact, its probably a better environment to do so. :)

We have to stop being pussy, and play the damn kid.

He is only going to have a brilliant future if he gains some experience at this age.

All the great players start young (well in most cases).

Huddo being the exception ;)

Welcome back :)

Some very good points you make. VB did start ordinary but as the game went on he became more comfortable with the pace of the game.

I was thinking about this today, with Hart out do we play Hentschel as a rebounding BP/HBF and bring in one of Jericho/Bock/S. Stevens to take up Hentschel's spot in the forward line??????

I think Hart will be a HUGE loss. His rebounding out of the backline has been superb. Hentschel displays similar attacking qualities as Hart.

Thoughts??????

IMO, if we are to win this game, we need Hentschel as a contributing forward.

What difference does it make if Van Berlo debut's this week to next? The kid has a good head on him, so play him now.

Last week Trent was our only forward, he must start there again on Sunday. However, I really like the look of him down back, great balance, poise and disposal. If one of our forwards in Stevo, Welsh or Perrie was in form then maybe we could afford this luxury, but sadly their first 2 weeks have been very ordinary.

Johncock ( if Wangas plays in a FP ) if not Thorney Rutts Bassett
Johncock or Thorney McGregor Goody
Edwards Roo Mattner
Trent Perrie Bode
Biglands Stevo Welsh

1R Hudson Thompson Mcleod

IC Clarke Doughty Shirley Reilly

I would even think about dropping Doughty to bring in S Stevens for a bit of extra marking power, albeit limited.

I'm a bit reluctant to bring The Count in for a showdown.....

.....I reckon it's scary enough debuting in the AFL without it being such a high profile game.......

but

given that the transition players are giving me the shizens atm - I say it's time to bite the bullet and play the Caped One.

Seriously......what would we lose in terms of output ??

not much

outs: Hart, Bode
Ins: Clarke, VB

:)

Play him as a forward.

I think we have all heard the comment before of letting a player learn his trade in the back 1/2 & then become a forward, but off hand I can't think of one good forward who started their career in the back 1/2.

We need forwards, he looks a likely type, keep him there & let him develope where we need him.

As for Hart; yep big loss, but we had better get used to him not being there. Sadly, time stands still for none of us. Even if he makes a complete recovery, at his age his time in the big league is coming to an end.

According to 5AA news someone is going to make their debut for the Crows this week. Has to be VB, surely?

He also said Bode is out and someone else. Rumours suggest its Shirley with a corky.

I am sure VB will play.

it is Shirley, announced on the radio this afernoon that he was ruled out this morning.

call me pessimistic but i dont know how good of an idea this is, simply because like i said it took him time to find the pace of SANFL and i actually wouldnt have minded him playing if he had played last weekend and continued his good showing with South. Mind you he did play on and beat Scott Stevens in that game, but like i said his disposal was average at best and was rushed a lot of times. I seriously would be excited though if he plays just because i love seeing new players run around for us!
