I quite like the place for once a quarter pissy Friday lunches but yes the white gloves on various of the "help" together with the high back leather chairs give it a hint of stuffy ...

Might be the odd secret handshake around the place too

Personally, I think it's the most succinct way of commenting on ones attributes without commenting or being misconstrued as commenting on their performance.

More succinct than just saying what those attributes are?

Why not just say a player is one-paced or has average disposal?

If I was to rattle off all of the attributes that Carter is unremarkable at, it wouldn't be succinct at all!

Yes, I do realise "unremarkable" is another term that could be used. I still don't think it's as clear as "vanilla" since it could still be construed as a reflection on performance.
