Can we make it a 3 way trade involving Geelong, GWS & Eagles

Geelong trades Varcoe to GWS
GWS sends pick 9/10 (whichever one) to Eagles
Eagles send S. Selwood to Geelong

If not quite enough, Geelong sends T. Hunt to Eagles

From what I understand - no way is S.Selwood moving from the Eagles.

So no matter how much we would like that deal cannot see it even remotely having a chance.

Is there any indication GWS would offer pick 9? Seems very unlikely, but stranger things have happened I suppose.

I think they would. They need "middle-aged" talent more than hot young things at this stage.
They went high-low when it came to player ages. GCFC went Medium/high-low and it seemed to have served them much better.

I wouldn't be surprised if they threw pick 9 into the mixer chasing something.

I would be surprised if Varcoe's name was the first one they thought of using it on.

Could be interesting. Great tank gets to a lot of contests, good skills but for some reason just hasn't got it all together yet. He is often the guy you see just to the side of the TV screen all the time close to where the ball is but never front and centre.

At this stage probably fair to say he might be overated and we could get something nice for him and then look back after next year frowning when he dominates for his next club.

As an observer perhaps.

He definitely is overrated, and he won't dominate for anyone next year. If they can pick up a draft pick or two for him it'll be a great result for the club.

Maybe, but players quite often need that new envoronment to make that next step, where if they stayed put they would likely dish up more of the same.

This thread has gone loco.

The thought that any team out there is offering a pick in the top 10 for Trav is surely just a dream.

I don't have any hesitation in saying you can bookmark this.

Because I would be utterly delighted to be wrong...

If it was purely a football decision they would not be considering trading Varcoe. We saw with their bizarre insistence in playing him despite his struggles they love him as a player. Added to this, he is the age bracket we desperately need and he is coming off a poor season so his value is low.

Sorry for those who have seen me post this before but I will post again.

There are three issues. Last Christmas he returned late to training after the break and almost quit (not in the press but was true). Second, his preparation and lifestyle decisions have not been adequate for a professional athlete. Thirdly, Geelong signed him to a very large contract after 2011 and have realised they are not getting value for money.

That the story is in the press and they are offering him makes me think they have made the call to cut their losses.

A very sad story for Geelong fans. More upsetting than Chapman really, because we never saw the best of Varcoe and he was such a joy to watch at his best.

He wouldn't be the first player to sign a lucrative contract, think they've made it, get comfortable with the security and then get lazy.

This is it for me. Varcoe is classic icing, and no cake. We need to focus on the cake at the moment, without which icing is useless.
I reckon it might hinge on what the Pies get for Thomas.
They already have something like pick 14.
So if they get 15 I think that might be relevant.

I would not mind an upgrade of a 3rd / 4th rounder too.

But would Eddie be able to look him in the eye and welcome him sincerely to the club?

Varcoe is a thorn in the side of this footy club and the day they give that pretender the arse I'll celebrate big time.
He just cost us a GF and you gallahs are talkin up this dork!...You're all delusional!!
Get rid of that handbag.

I'd be less surprised only in the sense that they've already milked the draft and "risked" their draft picks on potential player. They need more "we know what we're gonna get" type players.

Varcoe = 5 years of running flanker or outside mid.

The trade could involve Varcoe our pick 20 for pick 9 or Adams, and maybe we get back pick 30-40. That sort of thing.

This is a serious question. Did you have a bad experience with him when you met him once or something?

They currently have Pick 10 and are likely to get Pick 11.

Be serious!! An ave 10poss player given 12 weeks to come good!!...But I hope you talk up his delusional value!

What do you think his worth, or lackthereof, is? In the scenario I posited I see him purely as the player that pushes though another deal that's taking place.

Your guess is as good..but I hope we can convince others that he's worth his bullXXXX value.

Don't waste your time Manboob. Meto doesn't even know what's going on here - he thinks we are ALL pumping up his tyres, apparently failing to notice that most are getting into the spirit of the thread's theme, which is of course the prospect of trading Trav. This is a good example of Meto's neurosis.

It is trade time and we got bundled out of the finals.
Expect a lot of batshit crazy scenarios, where players who are perceived to be responsible for our failure to get to the grand final, will be offered up for trade like a bloody sacrifice on the altar to appease the BigFooty Geelong Cats Portal gods.

Similar thoughts. The way id express it is at some point in time players move from the newbie to solid parts of the club. At his age he should be one of these backbone type players on our list ,the issue with Trav is he is more feathers than backbone. He looks great when on but atm we need players to step up and be the new leaders etc.

So for the right club a fit Varcoe is worth more than he is to us atm. He may never be more than feathers. Compare him to Caddy who we just got or GHS and thats what we need more of. If we need feathers then the younger Motlop , Murda , maybe Burbury can do it.

If we can mange to get an early pick that enable us to get an extra quality kid. Either Adams or someone from the draft we will be better off come 2016. And at his next contract Varcoe would be a Restricted FA.

Might be harsh but the new worlds of FA which the players wanted and got , means some players will have to learn there is to side to the rights they have gained

The Prelim final was not solely down to Varcoe. There were a few weaknesses that night - Bartel's horrific blunder from the goal square, Kelly being shit, Josh Hunt being worse, Corey being done, Rivers not being able to handle Hale, Blicavs getting exposed and costing us 2 goals, and so on. But the fact is he had the chance to draw the game with 30 seconds to go from directly in front. For any kind of senior player it was an absolute sitter. Coupled with the fact he had yet another horrible game that's why he's singled out as one of the culprits. Quite correctly.
