Another glass half empty thread. Although i am yet to see the game, Ill reserve judgement until that is the case but Trav has been a good contributer in the first few weeks as have this Geelong side,that is sitting second when many people predicted it to fall. To continue to be in with a chance for another flag after losing there premiership coach and arguably there best player, with a stockpile of young talent waiting in the wings, is a measure of what a great football club the cats are. More toasting and less roasting is what the club deserves. Many Geelong supporters waited a lifetime to see the club win a flag, and have now been blessed to see 2, with more on the horizen. Time to stop being selfish and toast this mighty team.

Many people have agreed with the topic. Probably more than have disagreed. Does not indicate a failed thread. My god quite a few here are being awfully sooky and precious. We just want him too lift a bit like we ALL agreed he needed to in the absence of Jnr. In no way giving up on him or anything like that. Am sure he will improve.

Its an interesting way of looking at it mate. What do you call roasting a guy who was at least useful and serviceable yesterday? Theres a difference between constructive criticism and just ranting cos you want something?

I have no problem with his role. Going way back when Meto complained about TV only having 12 possessions I always defended.

Maybe he has been too drilled on space and inferred pressure. Not sure, but he had the chance to get people, to get the ball, and he didn't.

Well my point was his role will change from week to week based on players coming in and out of the side, not that he has "a role" in the side. You may have missed the point I was making there. Scotty has talked up versatility after the match too, I am relating my point specifically to the words coming from the coach, not just an opinion based mantra. Wojo going out and Selly coming in, I would expect Varcoe to do Sunday's role.

Your final line in bold is a flight of fancy. At the professional level, if you saw someone doing what you ascribe to Varcoe on Sunday, he wouldnt be playing next week, let alone at the bottom club in the burbs. But as anyone would understand who sits down at fence level of an AFL game, the ball moves in a split second. To suggest Varcoe was roaming around opting out of generally all of the contests he could, whilst snacking and dining on choice possessions, racking up 21, and only you and a handful of others in here happened to notice this spectacular "gutless" effort, and not the team of coaches we have or players around him is laughable and fairly silly really.

Most expect or hope Trav to "replace" Gaz in the middle in the shorter and longer term. Thats in an ideal world. Trav has his own set of skills, and is a different player in my book. But I do realise you love Gaz, and have been making an issue of how much he will be missed. Lets hope this isnt some misguided attempt to draw further attention to Ablett leaving?

Varcoe has been excellent in the first two games.

Criticism earlier was based around him only getting 13 -16 disposals and he needed to get more.

Well he may not have been at his scintillating best today but a lazy 22 disposals ( yes...too many handballs perhaps ) today shows he is getting more and more of the ball. He is becoming a key part of our on-ball brigade.

His footskills are a joy to watch and he has real pace.

He will be something else on the MCG...

To be fair, he was quiet in Round 1 against St Kilda. Nowhere near our best that night.

After watching him drop his head and spill a mark over the back, then attempt to tackle a Port player who'd picked up the pill only to be shrugged off like a rag doll, I thought what do they see in this guy, he's a front runner.
The amount of times he goes to ground when in traffic is deplorable.
His only position is playing extra wide on a wing or something like that.
The footy's to much a hot potato for him, always looks nervous and fumbley around a contest, just a flashy link player.
I'd definately prefer Wojak and probably even young Bundy who reminds me of a young Paul Chapman, plenty of guts.
I'm not saying Varcoe carn't be clever, but its never enough, and its always after someone gives it to him.

Its BS from my point of view as well THP...meto and I have had a long standing ( and good natured ) disagreement over Varcoe for some time. I see him as silk and potentially elite, and meto...and some others...as average...just ok... and one of the latter picked in our 22.

Now that he's racking up the 20+ possessions they demanded of him last year, it seems now he doesn't tackle and goes the soft option. Utterly ridiculous....nevertheless.......

I think he was heralded by a few in the media as already elite last season, Mike Sheahan suggested he had become a weapon for us in a team already stacked with stars. And I agree with you, now that he has solved the disposal issue, people go looking for the next "flaw" in his game. I think tackling is like anything else in footy, people move in and out of form with it, and it does relate to your fitness to how well you do it or dont do it, just like anything else in football. Teams can have poor tackling games or even seasons based on fitness, either that or if its not addressed at training etc it looms large. Its been made rather clear that Trav is coming off a fairly serious shoulder injury over the pre season. Then again maybe he is just playing roles the coach wants him to play.

I guess I am amused when people make excuses for a guy like Ablett who doesnt even play at our club any longer cos he didnt have a pre season, yet one of our own had a serious shoulder injury and its not recognised.

He's a Geelong player, I'd love to see him rip it up that's why I'm reluctant to use that label.

Mate you do realize in the key stats this year,kicks,handballs,tackles and goals Stokes leads Varcoe in all of them.

Can't see how you can take a swipe at Stokes and go harsh for Varcoe.

I'm totally with you on this one - the guy is transitioning from a flashy small possession winner into a consistent and damaging cog in our midfield grouping.
Has all the skills and smarts , probably gave it off a little too quick against Port, but has all the weapons to become elite.

Why? He's averaging 21.3 disposals per game so far in 2011....and thats after an interrupted pre-season....are you just waiting for a sub 20 to prove a non-existant point?

As Forssie pointed out above...Varcoe could walk on water and it wouldn't change your view. 20+ disposals against Sydney wont either.

I said 18 months ago that Varcoe would be a star and eventually an elite mid-fielder.....nothing subsequent to that has changed my view.

He's coming along very nicely thank you very much.
