That was the op.
Time to start reading ( or writing) rather than sniping chief. You might find you're better than you portray yourself.

I dont snipe mate. I am telling you what you are saying is absolute BS Disneyland stuff from a kids play group. Grow up & get over yourself.

A week ago you are in here defending poor old Gaz for his harsh treatment on this board for having no pre-season, and it was beyond your recollection that Varcoe was coming off a serious shoulder injury. I kind of wonder where you're coming from mate. You want to critique any one else in here?

Nice !

"but smoothly working around the pack without laying a bump, tackle, intercept, or winning the ball does jack for me"

Just for calibration.
Sorry VC, you are just plain wrong. Wait til we really have something to get stroppy about after a couple of losses to good opposition.

You dont read anything other than you're own posts do you.
Go back and have a look a few pages.

I'm not wrong about last weeks game.
And yes. This place will be fun

After watlching last weeks game, i tend to agree with VC about some seemingly lazy efforts on Varcoes behalf, but coming off a shoulder injury i don't expect him to go for the man at 100% intensity until he feels confident enough in his shoulder.

Trav played a relatively good game, and is a matchwinner who distributes and sets up scoring chances for the team. With the amount of ball winners the team has he's role will always be an outside player who runs and carries. Once he has full confidence in he's shoulder i hazard a guess that you will not see him gliding past contests, but rather applying the tackles and displaying the pressure we know he displays.

Was the OP correct based on the Power game- I'd have to say yes.

Was the thread unwarranted based on he's pre-season and injury, and the X Factor the man provides- Yes.

A fair post :thumbsu:

I think Selwood coming in and Wojo going out, Varcoe was asked to play an "outside" game, whether he took that too literally, I dont know. But what we know is tackling and pressure is usually a strength of Travs. So on the basis of one game to give a guy like that a roast is rather objectionable IMO given his surgery in the pre-season. Fortunately its a forum, so everyone gets a say.

Thats exactly right. He plays an outside game, but generally tackles and pressures when it's he's turn to committ.

Even under a specific structural role i still think he hasn't got the full confidence in the shoulder just yet, but when that confidence comes back look out.

Mate you do realize in the key stats this year, kicks, handballs, tackles and goals Stokes leads Varcoe in all of them.

Can't see how you can take a swipe at Stokes and go harsh for Varcoe.

Easy, because it's 3 games and Varcoe has the track record and by end of the season, even mid-season, he'll be tracking well ahead of Stokes

Don't forget Varcoe's interrupted pre-season either

and seriously Stokes gives up on the chase way and/or goes to ground way too easy

You may well be rite on all three counts but as you quite clearly state it's 3 rounds in, and the bloke your bagging hasn't put a foot wrong.
Your entitled to have a whipping boy on this board as quite a few do but you should not let it cloud your judgment.
By all means criticize when it's warranted,it's part of the forum,(this is not directed specifically at you as that was the first of your posts I have read but there are those in here that only see what they want to see in some players)

Varcoe goes alright. People have got to remember there are different types of players in the AFL, not all are hardworking inside players.

Varcoe does need to lift his defensive pressure (which is suprising as this was his strength). However, he has obviously been given a license to try and exploit the opposition via pace and run so is thereore positioning himself around packs in a receiving position. Nothing wrong with this, if it is what the coach has instructed.

But yes, things to work on for sure.

I need a whipping boy.

Maybe I should pick on the guy that looks like he's about to break a game open but seems to be playing like a millionaire.

Why do we have to give this guy (Varcoe) half a season to come good, you don't extend the same favors to Tom Hawkins, Stokes, Lonnergan etc, but this guy gets 12 weeks to start to show form, a wee bit partial wouldn't you reckon.

If the excuse is he's got a sore shoulder, he shouldn't be out there!
Same applies to any of our players.
If that's the case, give young Josh Cowan a run.

The synopsis regarding Varcoes shoulder isn't about it being sore but rather him gaining full confidence in using it, to lay ripping tackles and put his body on the line.
