I hadn't noticed his run until Roosy pointed it out on "On the Couch". Super-impressive, very proud that he was able to have a great game just at the right time.

he has "lazily" been doing this (ie the gut running) nearly every game all season but hasnt been noticed as there hasnt always been a finishing goal.

Well you and I and a few others have seen it.....he might run the length numerous times and not kick a goal or even end up with the ball.....the goal opportunity probably happens one in ten at best......

But you have to run the other nine to get the chance....but some people just cant see that!

That goal (* and lets not forget Mitch Duncan's contribution either!! ) and Tom Hawkins goal from the Ottens handball were the highlights for me along with Bundys mark....

Still a big future down at Kardinia Park!

If Varcoe can work out how to play 4 quarters of Footy for a full season then this guy could be anything, has a lot of ablett tendencies. Great player but he shits me. Goes missing, like at the grand final kicks the first 2 goals an then goes missing until last quarter

Go watch the game.

His tackles, defensive pressure, deft touches and handballs were there all day. Had a great game.

Along with Hawkins, could well be the breakout game they need to take their games to the highest level.

I guess some people are gunna hate.

Varcoe had 21 and 3. One of his best ever games.

21 possessions (10 contested) at 81% disposal effectiveness, three clearances, four inside 50s, three goals and two goal assists.

Hope he's set a standard for himself for 2012, that's possibly the breakout he needed.

How good was Mitch Dunc, he did the same, was invovled with the play down back, ran the ground, and actually turned and contested the mark against O'Brien, whatsmore he nearly took it as well!:thumbsu:
Trav was there to tidy up, in a most emphatic way!:thumbsu:

not every player is ablett snr or wayne carey.

Varco has a role and he plays it, and stepped it up GF day. He can improve and he's doing that.To say that he "shits you" just shits me

Me three. :thumbsu:
Trav played a big part in setting our standard towards the win and strongly ran out the game.
Kicking the first goal in a GF is hard enough (I wonder how many punters ca$hed in on that one) but getting the first 2 is superb, especially from a bloke who had the monkey of no GF goals on his back...
His goal in the 4th was just bliss.

He came, he saw, he scored... :thumbsu:

Was my favorite moment of the GF! Loved it....said to my hubby at the time...didn't TV start that?

Loved the Roo's picked up on it and so did the HSun, they had a page describing it so give the media some credit.

TV has his part to play and plays it beautifully! :thumbsu:

Cannot believe that on yet another thread we are defending Travis Varcoe. Like I said on the one that has been running for months on Varcoe and Hawkins, get out the 2009 GF and watch TV in the last quarter - hard, gut running, a string of 1 percenters and tackles, and ran from the back pocket at the end to give Chappy the handball for the winning goal. Again I say, thank God the selection committee picks the team - Travis has delivered when it matters in two really tight, hard core GF's - a record not many who have played AFL can point to. Yet again, Geelong is rewarded as a club for sticking by key players like TV and Hawkins. Those haters out there would do well to remember that, its fine to have an opinion, but some people are far too quick to ignore the positive in some of our players.

Would've been GOTY had it been during the H&A season... Loved his celebration and loved it when he's puffing his guts out and still said no to the water runner!

:D
agree :thumbsu: and I think Hayden Ballantyne may have won goal of the year against us earlier in the year for his goal from the back flank and it was eerily similar to Varcoe's except Ballantyne was fortunate that Harry Taylor's spoil bounced 15 meters back and directly into his path again.

Both sensational goals and both boys ran their absolute guts out when they were already buggered and it's a great example of just how great our athletes are compared to most around the world.

I remember him doing something similar a few years ago against Freo but got dogged by Gamble in the square. Gut runs all the time.

What year was that vid SJ? He looks considerably bigger around the arms

I didn't realize how amazing it was watching live. First time I saw the replay though I actually began to tear up a little from happiness for him & the team. He was absolutely spent but still managed to crumb the ball perfectly then put it through on his opposite foot. It was just so, so good & what footy is all about.

Shamefully I spent a fair bit of my time at the game wishing and yelling out for Varcoe to chase the opposition ball carrier harder (Max Rooke chasing down Raph Clarke in '09 style) and knew in any aerial 1on1 contests that it was doubtful he'd be able to mark the ball.

After watching the replay on TV I feel really guilty about my frustrations on him during the game. He was unbelievable! Worked his footy strengths to perfection.

I guess I just have to realise that Varcoe isn't going to be a great contested mark and his body on body work won't be as good as I'd hoped it to be. Everything else he did was fantastic. I guess I'm just wanting more because he's capable of becoming so much better but I'll take what we've got with him if he keeps working and running as hard as he did on the weekend. His skills/disposal efficiency are supreme!

Apart from outside of the 50m arc I'd want Varcoe (and Jimmy of late) to be the man to take all our set shots. Always confident he'll slot it through unlike guys like Tommahawk where I have to hide my eyes even if as close as 10m out from goal.
