Crows midfielder Nathan van Berlo will miss a month of football with a foot injury.

Crows club doctor Andrew Potter says van Berlo has an acute tear in the plantar fascia in the sole of his right foot.

“He requires a period of non-weightbearing on crutches for one week followed by a slow return to running and football,” Potter said.

He is unlikely to return to football before four weeks.

Other players unavailable for Saturday night’s opening round NAB Cup match are Brett Burton (knee), Jason Porplyzia (shoulder), Greg Gallman (collarbone), Richard Douglas (hip), Brad Symes (wrist/thumb) and Phil Davis (shoulder).

Unlucky for him, but not too much of a concern considering it's only PS and it just gives another youngster the opportunity to show his stuff!

so weeks of Nab cup week 3-7.

He will then have 2 weeks to recover for the season. No changes needed in my draft game team

Pity but best time of the season to do it. Lets a kid come into the team too and get the XP (Sloane!).

I hear VB's foot injured itself in sympathy for all the people whose butts he was going to kick this season. And to lull them into a false sense of security.

Not good news. Haven't heard of a plantar fascia injury which ended well. Thinking of Fungus Watts (long after he left the Crows) and one or two others..

It's an acute tear so hopefully nothing too serious... Still not the best prep for him for 2009 as he really looked like he would be probably our best mid this year (maybe behind Thommo).

Plantar Fascia is the tendon/muscle that lines the sole of the foot. It originates at the bottom of the heel and connects to all five metatarsals. It acts like a bow string for the foot and thus helps form the arch and is a critical to taking off and acceleration. He wants to make sure he lets this heal properly.

Failure to let it heal properly can lead to all sorts of problems, including heel spurs and continual problems with heel soreness.

Yep, it's what Harvey had. Ottens had it at the start of last season too. Missed about 9 games I think. But his was only partially torn and needed to tear fully before it could get better, that's why it took so long. Not sure if VB's is fully torn though.

When did this happen? People seemed to be aware VB was injured before today but I never heard where it was first announced.

Sorry to hear it but hopefully he can take some time off and get himself ready for the season, even if he misses the first couple of weeks.

There were some signs...

E.g., he didnt take part in the last 3km time trial....

Disappointing news. :( However…

“He requires a period of non-weightbearing on crutches for one week followed by a slow return to running and football,” Potter said.

Knowing VB, he’ll be back before 4 weeks. I see him lining up for Round 1 no problems. :)

He'll be fine.

He just needs a few weeks to rebuild country victoria.

:thumbsu: haha. He's such a hero! :p

The "Plantar Fascia" sounds like a plant...when they said it on the news, I had a bit of a laugh.

Does anyone know how he did it??
