Vegemite: over-hyped?

When Phil Tuffnell was here last summer they opened the BBL commentary up to viewer questions... one of the questions was had he tried Vegemite since he'd been here...

His reply was a quick 'No I prefer Marmite'.

Why do so many Australians think that somehow Vegemite is original and unique and like no other thing in the world?

Just a media beat-up? Just more jingoistic hokeyism?

Marketed and advertised as Strayan for decades. "Vegemite" sounds more palatable than "yeast extract".

Honest and informed conversation about Australian culture and history, and what that culture and history says about us, can be hard to find. Frivolous things like "what i put on toast lol" are substituted.

You're going to have a bad time when News.com.au is forming your picture of Australia.
