We are bottom 4
Nah. Bottom 8 most likely and maybe 13th or 14th.

Crows, Hawks, North and GC clearly worse.

I know they beat us but Essendon did nothing to inspire me today other than pressure like madmen. I feel like that is not sustainable for young players though.

Pies may get going but otherwise they are clearly bottom 4 at this point.

Then there is Carlton, who I strongly feel shouldn't be in this position, but could finish below us as well. Especially if McKay is injured. He is like a better version of Tabs and kicks half their goals.

Don't worry, our rebuild isn't done. We have another 3 years or so of it I'd say.

The best clubs do not allow 10 to 15 year rebuilds,
In our case it would mean the players drafted at the beginning of the rebuild in 2016 would be finished before the end prize.Longmuir would not be the coach in 2026/30
It would become a never ending rebuild.
We were promised finals when Lyon was sacked. We weren't promised another 5 plus years of a rebuild.

Yes and no, I think you need to be patient and do a rebuild properly.

I don’t care about finals this year or next if it means we have a quality core group of players for 2023 onwards. We’d only be making up the numbers.

I would hate for us to do a St Kilda and ‘top-up’ just so we can play a game or two in September. We need to do this properly but it’s as frustrating and painful as f*^¥.

It's 25 years we are St Kilda. I think we have been plenty patient.

Hogan has scored 8 goals in 2 games this year.

Wouldn't that have been nice?

I hate that we traded him. I know for certain there were issues over here that would have prevented him being successful for us. But I just hate that we made another team around our mark stronger.

Funny how St Kilda had 10 - 11 yrs out of finals after Lyon left and we are headed the same way

Probably just a coincidence though

I don't like looking backwards, the Hogan/ Lyon talk is pointless and boring.
What does concern me hence my vent is the amount of question marks that must be circling within the Club at the moment:

•Is Cerra staying ? I think not .
•Fyfe hitting the realisation that he ain't playing finals with us , must be messing with his head and can't be good for his leadership ( probably similar to what Cripps is going through at Carlton)
• Walters same as above with Fyfe but added mid life crisis in his form
• Has JL got what it takes , has he got the players belief ?
• Good players carrying well paid passengers can't be cohesive
• So many injuries to our young players? Why ? Poor preparation? Dockers curse ? Not enough awareness and conditioning ?

One can only hope that the club is working towards a cohesive long term future , but geez , from the expert armchair of a BF observer it must be very trying for them atm .

Serious question - when was the last successful “rebuild” in the AFL? And how long did it take?
Tigers, Dogs, Hawks, Cats all were definitely rebuilds.
7, 5, 7, 8

Something like that. Dogs being so short is a massively outlier. Especially without quality KPFs which the others all had.

Now the list of premierships from non-rebuilds in the last 15 years.

It’s an interesting point.
I would say the last successful “quick” rebuild was the Eagles from 2008-2010.
Even then it took them 8 years for that core (shuey, gaff, McGovern, darling) to win a flag.
There’s been plenty of failed ones though.

You are definitely no guarantee if you do one, buy you're guaranteed not to win if you don't.

Hawks tried to avoid it, look where they are at now.

No it wouldn't. Another 3 years would put them in their mid-20s smack bang in their prime. And if you think about it, it makes sense that a rebuild would start paying off when the first crop taken hit that age.

Hodge and co were taken in 2001 and Hawthorn won in 2008 for example - that's the equivalent of 2023 for us with Brayshaw and co.

And to continue that comparison, in 2006 (the equivalent of this year for us) Hawthorn finished 11th with a 9-13 record.

I think the club is at a bit of a precipice now. I’m really concerned about what the future holds.
Every part of the organisation needs to start showing some steel and leadership and improvement right now.
On the field, it’s been on the whole, a below average season so far. We have been thrashed by Eagles and Carlton, and lost tamely to Melbourne and Brisbane, with today’s game a missed opportunity against a poor side that are bottom 6 at best.
There’s constant negativity surrounding Cerra’s contract, supposedly one of the key planks of our fabled rebuild. If he does leave, then the clubs recent communications are embarrassing - today’s Twitter article headline “Cerra can’t wait to get home to perth” just read like a clingy girlfriend. Internally I would hope the club arent tiptoeing around him begging him to sign. Adam - you are either staying or you are not. So sign the contract or say you are pissing off. It’s no longer a question of money so stop ****ing everyone around.
The injury situation is worse than ever. The hidden cost is the delayed development in the likes of Sturt and young and Chapman who will still be playing like first year rookies in 2022 having had barely any football since coming to the club. A good example of this is Logue. He should have 60 games played now and be playing close to AA level. Instead his time here has been destroyed by injuries and he’s at least 2 years behind in development, showing flashes of brilliance but that’s all yet.
The hamling and Pearce injury nightmare seems never ending, and can’t be good for morale in the club of everyone.
Walters is obviously waning and there are some worrying signs that Fyfe is not what he once was either.
Longmuir - massive question marks appearing. The game plan is just not gelling.
The Hogan debacle has been so damaging to the club. The majority of freo fans will have woken up in a bad mood this morning having seen us turn lachie Neale into Jessie Hogan kicking bags... for another ****ing club.
Goal kicking has been atrocious for as long as I can remember watching freo and shows no signs of improvement apart from glimpses of accuracy from 18yo Treacy and Sturt (who can’t get his body right for love nor money). We are kicking more behinds than goals in 80% of games now I reckon?

The only bright spots this year have been some decent organic growth in Sean Darcy, Brayshaw and Cerra looking the part, serong picking up from last year and Tabs excellent consistency.
I think we are at least 2 more drafts from a competitive list, and probably 4 years from potential (not guaranteed) contention.
Improvement is required in every single aspect of the club to achieve this.
There is a strong risk we become the new Gold Coast Suns very soon - a feeder club for the big dogs unless finals don’t appear soon.
Tough times to be a freo fan.

The best clubs attract talent who are willing to get paid slightly less for the greater good - destination clubs.

Think Geelong for it's lifestyle.

In Perth we compete with WCE who get players extra gigs $$ outside football. Plus WCE are based in a far more cosmopolitan area.

It was a mistake moving out of Fremantle.

I wish we were close but we are a way off. Too many questions regarding injuries, stunted development & contracts coming up.
If cerra doesn't sign up it could open us up to a world of hurt.

Honestly don't care if he goes.
If we can somehow pick up a good forward out of it I reckon we are in front

Another 3 years of rebuilding simply doesn't work for us, by that point we have lost or either have an old Fyfe, Mundy, Taberner, Walters.

3 of those are top 5 players for us and 1 had been up until this year.

Thats not even mentioning the players that may not want to stick around for that long if we are sh$%, Cerra, Tucker, Serong?, Young?, Sturt?

We don't get to decide how long it takes, we are at the mercy of the development gods. Taberner will still be around but the others will be in the twilight or gone. Get used to it.

They go, they go.

Funny how they were labelled a powerhouse and enjoyed their best years when Lyon was coach with 2 GF appearances and before and after Lyon a basket case.
Probably just a coincidence though.
