There’s swings and roundabouts but I wouldn’t say we’re at a net positive.

We might fight it out better, but we start away games in complete disarray compared to that under Ross.

Skills look a bit better, but the pressure and tackling has definitely regressed.

I think you’ll find that most teams have struggled playing away this season and particularly the starts.

Once we got dominated during 2016 - 2019 that was it, we couldn’t stem it or fight back.

Skills look a bit better, but the pressure and tackling has definitely regressed.
We've gone from bottom 5 for Marks i50 in Ross' last year to currently top 3.

We were 2nd worst for turnovers in Ross' last year, we are now 3rd best.

We were 3rd bottom for tackles in Ross' last year, we are now 2nd bottom. (edit - we were worst for tackles i50 in 2019, we are still bottom in 2021)

So I'd rephrase as "Skills look a lot better, but the pressure and tackling has regressed a little bit"

The big change for me and it’s a massive positive is that if that was a Freo 2016 - 2019 side on Sunday with Logue, Hamling, Pearce, Tabs out, it would’ve been a massive flogging. The way we collected ourselves and actually fought back (something extremely rare during the Lyon years) was very impressive and extremely positive.

Agree to an extent but we rolled over and lost by 8

We have no one on the list that opposition supporters love to hate , no booo material. We have nice players now, no longer booed at ,now s******ed at.
Ballantyne, Crowley, Dawson hated by all opposition. Our previous coach was boo material , hated by anyone who wasnt Freo and even hated by some who were. We were relevant, got prime time games. Given air time on the Vic centric footy shows.
We have turned into a marshmallow club. Longmuir is a nice bloke and good luck to him but he is vanilla.Justin coaches like he played.
Freo are afraid to confront afraid to offend.
Just wish some one at the club would come out and call the umpiring, the fixtures , the endless late Sunday games ., the total lack of free to air apart from WA.
The club needs to stop bowing and groveling to mainly WC press.
When will the club realise the press want Freo to fail.
In a 2 team town we struggle to attract 40000 members WC have 100000on their books .
We are afraid to be a footy club.

What's our identity right now? I've tried to figure it out this year and I don't know.

Under Ross, for good or bad, we were blue collar battlers playing hard, dour footy that always forced our opposition to earn it.

Who are we and what do we stand for? I wonder how JL would answer that infamous question posed to Mark Harvey years ago right now.

I want to disagree with you but to be honest, it’s very hard to.
We are becoming more and more irrelevant every week.
Looked at the R16 fixtures and our game v Carlton is one of the best but I’d be surprised if we get any FTA coverage in vic. Probably be stuck into Sunday at 4:40 by Travis Auld.
Living in Vic, freo are viewed as a weak, submissive, irrelevant club.
The Halycon days of Ross Lyons team of warriors flying over to places like Geelong and the MCG upsetting the AppleCart from 2012-15 are a distant memory.
One of the all time great footballers in the sports history, Nat Fyfe has spent the prime of his career playing for a side in the margins of the sport that are only viewed by diehards and most casual footy fans in Australia have not seen him play a full match in years.
Your average sports fan in Victoria has seen ten times more of Kamdyn Macintosh and marlion Pickett in the last 5 years than Fyfe.
How utterly depressing.

That's my cue:
Feels like I'm in a time warp and I've landed in the Richmond board 2016
I've said it before, I really think you guys are too dark on yourselves. The Dockers have shown signs here and there this year. When they play well the game plan stacks up. I don't quite see the total 'buy in' yet but, again, there are glimpses. You're inconsistent, but you've been a little bit unfortunate with injuries. I don't think 11 wins this year is totally out of the question, and if you could just get your shit together for a few weeks maybe even more. Either way, to the ignorant outsider, you appear to be heading in the right direction.
Don't mind being proven wrong ;)

I agree we are too dark on ourselves. I think we are trending up.

However I think the lack of FTA games (7 in 6 years i think) and no friday night games in 6 years is a legitimate grievance. As is playing north melbourne and hawks in tazzy every year (especially when hawks were good it cost us 4 points and the extra travel on top of the mountain we did already). Early sunday games are also a problem. we are 2 hours behind. pubs sometimes aren't open at 10.30am. Can the afl stop scheduling us to the early sunday time-slot.

The other thing that I also believe is a legitmate grievance is lack of coverage. I like listening to podcasts when i study for university. across afl 360, on the couch, footyology, hard ball gets, duff and quarters, fox footy's two podcasts, footyology, the age, afl exchange, damien barrets thing. it totals about 10 hours of content. each team should average about 35 minutes of coverage.
duff and quarters covered freo for 10 minutes.
footyology, hard ball gets and damien barretts covered us for about 4 minutes total.
the rest representing about 6 hours of content forgot. I believe they cover us for a minute once every 4 weeks.
we got 14 minutes of coverage for the week. many of those cater to the whole footy public such as fox footy. I will continue to listen because i love footy, but I'm honestly sick of listening " well lets talk about carlton, where do you think they are at. well funny you should say that......big problems".

Couldnt agree more. National sport my arse.

I have no problem with the age not covering because they are a melbourne based newspaper catering to their market.

The rest cover the AFL. The couch, afl 360, footyology, afl exchange, first crack, fox footy, damien barrets represents 7 hours of content. I find it staggering that its been 3 weeks in a row of about 5 minutes of content.

Actually to be fair footyology do cover us.

Egregious. If what you say in the fist paragraph is true, it's pretty outrageous. No Friday night games in f***ing how long?
As for the rest of it, I wouldn't give a shit about Damien Barrett if I were you, and flying under the radar isn't necessarily a bad thing if you can afford it.

Sorry to keep intruding. I'll piss off now.

Apart from 3-4 years when we were pretty good all the other years we have struggled to win away no matter who we have coaching, playing, administering, etc. It gets pretty depressing when we have been around 27 years now and yet we can go into games like last weekend and have the game over in the first 5-10 minutes. What makes it even more frustrating is if the game was at Optus we might have had a chance to win it. The effort levels of our team in a home vs away game are stark. Maybe we just need to forget about the assistant coaches and just hire a better team of psychs or something as our home performances generally (except for Derbys) show it is all above the shoulders.

No that is fine an outside voice to penetrate the bubble is welcome.

It’s true. 17 teams have gotten channel 7 FTA coverage this year. We are the only ones who haven’t.
Not. One. Game.
Every other side has gotten at least 2, even the bloody Suns!

I live in Melbourne and every single vic club gets plenty of coverage and far far more than we do, even on supposedly national platforms.
Same and North get sweet **** all regardless. It wasn’t until I got here and told people I went for Freo that I truly understood how little we mean to the general Victorian public. Just because it’s a national show doesn’t mean they don’t care about ratings, Freo simply doesn’t rate.

Nah you’re welcome here
Respectful and positive
Can’t ask for more than that .
Particularly given the amount of shit we laud on ourselves.

Yes but have you noticed that teams like GWS, Adelaide, port, even the Suns get a lot more coverage than freo on shows like footy classified?
West coast get 4-5 free to air matches every season too.

Honestly not really but I’m sure that’s right. Thing is what’s our narrative? We aren’t good or bad and we don’t have a forward kicking bags. There’s not a lot to talk about. We got some traction last year with Serong and some strong games, Henry could be the guy this year with some eye catching games.
