We're in a bad spot when we're talking about Colyer as having improved.

That's like standing under an elephant as it takes a gigantic dump on you... then saying 'At least I wasn't wearing my Sunday best'.

Sitting at the game last night were people who travel from Busselton. They said they’re done, and can’t justify the trips any longer. Can’t blame them. It’s the same old story.

Mate, I do a 6 hour round trip every home game and have done so for the last 15 years and I don’t get the luxury of Forrest Hyw. All I can say to the Busso crew is toughen princesses.

You support your team through thick & thin, and for all the years I’ve been supporting the Dockers, this year they’ve played some good footy and unearthed some young talent. Love watching the buds blossom.

Geez, I’ll take you back to 2001, now that was bad !!!!!. The supporters today have got luxuuuuuuuuuuuuuury.

Watched my WAFL team kick 19.5 against East Perth today. Tyler Keitel kicked 8.1 and my kid’s school teacher kicked 3.0.

if these part timers Can kick straight why can’t AFL professionals?

All those always screaming about Blakely and how he needs to come back into the team, he played a full game tonight for the first time in ages, you would think with being medical sub for 4 or 5 times he would make every post a winner and come out blazing and he gets 10 possessions! He has played 72 games now and everything he does is below average.
i cant understand why JL played an inside mid on the wing. I cant recall him being at any centre bounces

Best guess was a structure thing. When Darcy went off, Acres went into the ruck to keep a forward structure. At the same time Cox & Fyfe went off, so there wasn’t much JL could do elsewhere.

The obvious move was Tucker to wing & Blakely to half back, but I think he’s keen to keep Tucker at half back in Hughes spot & Blakely as the sub will come on & play where’s he’s needed, whether that’s wing, half back or on ball.

I think it was just a case of not having to shuffle the magnets too much to remain competitive on the night.

I’m the messenger, take it out on them. The crowd in the fourth quarter was fed up. These are the things they were saying.

I would suggest that fatigue especially is over rated. Plenty of goals are missed in the 1st quarter. Pressure would have an effect as it does in all sports.
So you're saying it's a factor, right?

You don't think fatigue happens in the first quarter? Try repeated 20-50m sprints in short succession, with some physical exertion in tackling and bumping at any stage of the game and you're going to suffer a degree of fatigue. Add that to pressure (the stronger the opponent the greater the pressure, plus the pressure of higher stakes). My whole point is all about degrees.

What I'm saying is that early on in a game they should be kicking the goals without excuse. Fitness would be a negligible factor to the point of irrelevance.

It's not about "excuse", it's whether it's a factor or not. It's a factor.

We can define fatigue in this sense as a state of significantly reduced physical and mental capacity. Each significant effort can result in this, but the duration before bouncing back from that probably increases with repeated efforts. But certainly, it can happen in the first quarter. It's not the only factor though.

Goal kicking is obviously a process that is open to a number of factors that can derail it at all levels. The oversimplistic "they can do it at [insert WAFL/amateur/park] level so why not at AFL level" is an illogical argument as it relies on cherry-picking and paints a false picture. It pretty much erases all the misses and poor shots that said WAFL etc teams/player have, as well as the game is easier at lower levels at a number of different elements. It's not that they aren't trying, but it's pretty hard to eliminate human fallibility.

I never made any of those comparisons. I know scoring is difficult in any sport. It's why forwards are generally paid and revered more than defenders. My point is that, at the top level of any sport, in the first stanza of play, lack of fitness should not be a factor in why a player misses. It will generally be a mental or technique issue. Mostly mental all things being equal. However technique should be considered and addressed first.

Some other important benchmarks below for context (these are per game averages btw)...

Notes:
  • Ross Lyon never had a team in the top 8 for marks i50.
  • We reached a Grand Final with the 4th lowest average i50s, and were minor premiers with 5th worst. There's "defence first" and then there's "defence or bust".
  • The tackle i50 numbers are damning. 4 out of last 5 years we've been dead last. How is that possible with so many short people on our list?
