I recruitment of s**t experienced players or over paying for players during a rebuild is so annoying.

This is by far my biggest complaint.
Lobb, Hogan, Clark, Wilson, kersten, Matera were all recruits who have pushed us further away from a flag.

Omeara and Jackson are too early to call but I think they will push us away from a flag as well.
The recruitement from 2016-2018 was awful. I have no issue with our recent recruitment. Jackson has been very good this season, especially when he plays in his natural role. Has been BOG in a few games already. The price tag will be fine if they get a pick outside the top 10. I'm sold on him.

JOM made no sense at all. Especially for four years. Seemed like they still thought he was the JOM of old. That being said he was instrumental in our winning streak. But I don't like that he's keeping out younger players like Erasmus and Johnson from the middle. I'm 50/50 on him at the moment.

Clark cost us nothing in the scheme of things and has been very good. Hasn't missed a game for us. Still only 22. His best is very good. No problem with him either.

Clark cost puck 22. Jackson we massively overpaid for. Jom was just dumb.

For Clark especially, you can't draft A graders if you trade in B graders.

If we had more A graders already, Clark would have been a good trade.

We are always too impatient, and trade away picks too early.

who did we miss with pick 22? we had picks 8,10,21 that year. 3 A grade talents.

I just have a general rule, that while rebuilding you need to get as many A graders as possible.

If you trade away picks you miss the chance. Sometimes you miss a star, other times you don't. In this case we probably won but other years you will lose. Long term you lose trading in players during a rebuild

The A graders are mainly top 10. Swapping pick 22 for a young Clark 2 or 3 years into his career is not a bad move. I do agree with you on the 2018 draft balls up though.

You're right. JL is just a softy, that's all. All the great coaches, in basically every sport, aren't soft at all.
We had one of those once, but apparently being able to perform for the media was considered more important.

It just doesn't sit right.

I know there's going to be young teams that swing in and out of form, but there's something deeper under the surface going on when we win a month of footy against last year's grand finalists and the top team of the past 3 seasons, and subsequently shit the bed against non-contenders.

I guess I'd take this list over the mostly appalling list 2016-2018 (with a fair few numpty's sprinkled across the team) - but it's actually the coach and captain's responsibility to manage the collective confidence, esteem and direction of the team.

People mentioned that Ross would be doing better with this list, he would out of the sheer fact the talent speaks for itself - they're looking for commanding strength which is what he provides (there are other issues with Ross admittedly and I'm not saying I prefer him over JL).

Alex Pearce opened up about his mental health, he has my empathy and respect - I worked in men's mental health a number of years and it impacts some of the best people out there. I think he's a ripping bloke and a great defender, but the reality in terms of leading a team to greatness you need a bull - and for me that is Caleb Serong. I haven't seen someone like him in years and I don't think he would stop in seeking success and demanding the best out of his players and himself.

JL needs a hard-nosed, older mentor/senior assistant who can balance his calm temperament. The coaching list is mostly young and similar to him - living in 2023 and skilled but lacking grit.

I could be talking shit and I grew up playing other sports so can't comment on actual play, but I feel this is the difference between achieving success at Freo and missing out again.

It's just dumb to play Jackson as the first ruck, like using a race horse to pull a plough.

Further to that with Treacy as the second ruck we are playing one tall forward short most times because one of them is on the ball.
What's the alternative here. Do we have a tall fwd that we can bring in to to provide that role as Fyfe can't, if Jackson and Treacy rotate into the ruck, or is there is a ruck we can bring it that Jackson can help rotate into to keep the structure

Kuek is the Forward, Reidy is the ruck, either of them would have meant Himmelberg wasn’t matched up on Walters

Not sure that is necessarily just matching up. You think kuek has the physicality to same fwd role as Treacy or Jackson. Crashing packs and providing the contest. Think the rucks we have not sure whether they ready

Personally, I would have brought in Reidy and said “just do your best to compete” played him 50/50 ruck and forward, Jackson does the other 50% ruck and 30% wherever we need him, Treacy spends his entire 80-85% game time forward. Walters gets a defender who’s only 10cm taller than him instead of 20cm

Pretty good reading. Not as bad as the first few rounds though

I went to the game last night and it was the type of performance that's probably going to prevent me from making the effort to see the team live for some time. Considering the time and cost to get out there and being repaid like that, is unfortunately now in this team's DNA.

Before I moved to Sydney I watched us at Subiaco every week, so watching them yesterday was a stunningly new experience for me. Ultimately it was a comedy, I could not believe how an entire team almost literally took the night off.

Any other BF posters that went to the game here? Was it just me or was it not possible for us to buy seats in the 'away section'? And that section did not exist?

As insignificant as it sounds, I really think even in minor part it had something to do with the team being unaccountable in the last quarter, as if there was no physical witnesses to the display.

To be honest I didn’t even look at the block number. I go to a fair few giants games here is Sydney so I knew where the Freo cheer squad would be, and I knew there would be more than enough seats to just walk in there.

But you are right they looked like like were on a Sunday stroll and didn’t want to be there

Reminds me of Hannath. Just compete, do a job.
The selections the last two weeks suck.

No Darcy - no centre square dominance, no field position.

No plan B...

That’s it, JLo and Match Committee are certified idiots. Dropping the player who kicked 40% of our goals last week is just stupid.
Actually kicked 49% of our score AND was the third highest tackler AND had the second most score involvements AND the fifth most running meters on ground (OF ANY PLAYER).
But screw it let us drop him just because he isn't Hughes, JOM or Ryan.

Soul destroying selection policy for anyone that actual comes into the team on the fringes and performs well.

Glad you're putting this in the vent thread where it belongs

when we went to the Melbourne game at the MCG recently I called the club for the 'away team section' and was really surprised it no longer existed. I was sure it had in the past.
