WA only has 2 teams and is a footballing state, Queensland has 2 teams and is a rugby state. How on earth do they unearth all these AFL players from their academies. We are a football state, we don't seem to have these players emerging anywhere to unearth, look at the the draft ,we have nobody much near the top end but these non-footballing states with their academies seem to have them. I have noticed a huge decline in our state of quality footballers, we've fallen behind big time. WA needs to invest more money in our football so we can get back to a higher level ,at this rate will be minnows for many years to come, a real concern and people want us to have a third team ???? An example of this is if you look at our aboriginal players of recent time ?? yeah right where are they ? We had them in abundance 10 years ago. Farmer,Franklin,Abraham,Kicketts,Krakouers,Winmar,Lewis,Matera etc.
Look at the recent under 18s ,we were thrashed, the allies are way ahead of us. SA seem to be holding up really well, what are they doing right?
Read this & it might help. The time & resources the individual clubs put into their programs is the reason.

Locally, until there is a massive overall of our under 19’s competition there will be no change & WC & Freo have to start that discussion to encourage change. Bottom line is whilst kids are in the hands of WAFL clubs programs there is far too much focus on winning over development. Not to mention they are virtually left to their own devises in regards to funding.

That article is 10 years old, how is it close to being relevant?

Current community participation numbers: https://play.afl/nswact/news/footy-kicking-goals-record-participation-soars-past-600000
Victoria 245k
WA 88k
QLD 85k
NSW/ACT 73k
SA 70k

I'd say it's from the relatively similar numbers in the player pool for each state bar Victoria and the fact they get a lot more development put into them as mentioned above.

At what numbers do the QLD/NSW teams lose access to their academies given that's why they exist*? These numbers will only increase and exacerbate the advantage further as the percentage of people playing AFL increases given both states population size.

*Apparently

So 3rd year in a row now the grand final is a big Victorian team with all the advantages that gives them playing against a QLD/NSW team full of academy players.

Without major changes to play movement I genuinely think we tap out as a top 4 team max with this current list.

**** it's frustrating.
Don’t wanna be that guy, because I agree with your general statement, but last year was Sydney vs Brisbane, so no Vic team involved.

The Northern academies hire regional coaches on good money, sponsored by the afl. They offer coaching jobs to Vic based men to run the academy, men with kids who are the best up and coming juniors. They move the best kids into their regions.

The northern academies also incorporate all players in the area, not just specific NGA eligible kids like ours.

No one would say our academies weren't working if we'd been gifted the likes of Allan, Edwards, Humphries, Hall, Curtin, Ginbey, Erasmus, Van Rooyen, Johnson, Amiss, etc, the last few years.

What in god's name are you on about? The ashcrofts have played three and a bit seasons between the two of them

Still better than what we got out of Fyfe, O’Meara etc

Ashcroft x 2 on the middle and Fletcher off half back vs O’Meara the Corpse of Nat Fyfe and Banfield/Worner.

Yeah this is it.

We can pick academy kids only from the 10% or whatever it is that qualify as indigenous or overseas qualified.
They get the lot to choose from

Freo were a basket case full of raging alcoholics and drug users back then.

Brisbane have an academy with exclusive player access and have been lucky with Father Sons and Free Agents.

I've not seen one Freo fan outside the internet that cares about that player. They've all moved on.

2018. The year ‘he who shall not be named’ wanted out to go to a club that was ‘closer to a premiership than Freo’ (his words).
This truly, truly sucks. Both infuriating and heartbreaking. Seriously, I love this club but also **** this club. 😡😭💔

He was right though, we were heading down into a rebuild, they were heading up having already acquired a fair bit of talent. A snapshot of the ladder tells nothing of the speed and direction each team was moving.

And he's got couple Premirships to show he was right-

If he’d stayed we’d have Ben King or Rozee and we’d have rebuilt quicker

We were already 3 years into a rebuild. 😢

Yup. Love/hate this club. 💔

AND IT’S THE VENT THREAD. I’M ALLOWED TO VENT EVEN IF IT MAKES LITTLE SENSE IN THE BIGGER PICTURE LIFE ON EARTH 😡

Just love it ( even if it’s pretend )

Hate doesn’t do you or the club much good really , just negative energy

I think at the end of the day they’ve tried their best with the shit cards they’ve been dealt and they obviously aren’t card sharks .

Trac to suns, oh dear, the bigfooty servers will melt when suns win their first flag before us.
Remains to be seen if he is actually changing them at all. He could be JOM. He will push out another of their rising top picks and take opportunity away.

Not sure it's a pick up that significantly moves the needle for them. Petracca is a power athlete with poor skills. High chance his best is behind him.

Surely he's better than JOM. Omera has done nothing at Freo except take away an opportunity from a younger player whole we are not in contention.
