Read this & it might help. The time & resources the individual clubs put into their programs is the reason.WA only has 2 teams and is a footballing state, Queensland has 2 teams and is a rugby state. How on earth do they unearth all these AFL players from their academies. We are a football state, we don't seem to have these players emerging anywhere to unearth, look at the the draft ,we have nobody much near the top end but these non-footballing states with their academies seem to have them. I have noticed a huge decline in our state of quality footballers, we've fallen behind big time. WA needs to invest more money in our football so we can get back to a higher level ,at this rate will be minnows for many years to come, a real concern and people want us to have a third team ???? An example of this is if you look at our aboriginal players of recent time ?? yeah right where are they ? We had them in abundance 10 years ago. Farmer,Franklin,Abraham,Kicketts,Krakouers,Winmar,Lewis,Matera etc.
Look at the recent under 18s ,we were thrashed, the allies are way ahead of us. SA seem to be holding up really well, what are they doing right?
Locally, until there is a massive overall of our under 19’s competition there will be no change & WC & Freo have to start that discussion to encourage change. Bottom line is whilst kids are in the hands of WAFL clubs programs there is far too much focus on winning over development. Not to mention they are virtually left to their own devises in regards to funding.
How the northern football academies work
There's a lot of talk about them, but how do AFL academies really work?
