WOW!

GREATER Western Sydney has been slapped with a $100,000 fine and a penalty of 1,000 draft points after the AFL Commission sub-committee made its ruling over the Lachie Whitfield case.
Taking away 1000 points will do nothing. They'll still end up with 3 or 4 first round academy players.

If they finish 4th again next year...their first Pick will be #63. Will be a tad difficult to match a bid from there, I would suspect.
They also have 3 2nd round picks though, so while their first pick might be 63, they'll just match with all the picks in between

Just wanted to wish you all a happy and safe Christmas, the Suns and BF have been an escape in my life during a tough year transitioning to Sydney life, your opinions and humour have been a great source of fun and challenged my thinking

Merry Christmas

Not quite the same.
Trigg as the official effectively set up a secret contract.

GWS officials only aided a player by avoiding having his whereabouts known, because he felt he may fail a drug test.

The drug test thing is only about the integrity of the playing participants. Clearly the AFL don't put too high a value on that.

FWIW, I believe GWS have got off very lightly and Adelaide were hard done by in comparison.
This is probably the most accurate summation of the punishment (posted on the main board).

I can't help but feel like GWS were effectively fined $100,000 worth of monopoly money, though.

An individual club that's privately owned getting fined is one thing, but the way the AFL operates they're pretty much just fining a branch of their own organisation (it's like a conglomerate fining a subsidiary company of theirs, moving a sum of money from one till they run and own to another till that they run and own - it's practically meaningless). It's simply a blip on the books for the appearance of posterity.

The below post perfectly illustrates why the docking of draft points might sound like a more suitable penalty, but when put under the microscope is just as limp-handed as the 'fine':

A soft penalty.

By using "points" instead of specifying picks, the AFL have given the GWS a loophole to trade for lower valued picks which they may not have necessarily used to make up the penalty and avoid losing any first rounders.

Eg. Pick 41, 42 and 56 = 412 + 395 + 194 = 1001 points (based on: www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL%20Tenant/AFL/Files/Points-draft-value.pdf)

GWS is very, very lucky to have gotten away very lightly. I am not surprised, though.

Do you know if they're docking points from their first picks or can they fiddle with what points from what draft picks get docked like the above?

It's the AFL's money - fine them whatever you want it makes no difference

I'm Expecting one Jack Bowes to end up with something similar to Jargers Juniors.
Bowes is having club videos released more then any other player I can remember.
Interviewing Brodie.
Getting interviewed for SunsTV
Some big top secret video of him still to be released
Bowes releasing merry Xmas videos.

Maybe the club is planning on using Bowes as the next big thing.
Locally born and bred. Gun player.
Use him as a marketing toy to get gun sportsmen to give NRL a miss and jump onboard AFL and into the Suns Academy.

Anyway I'm all aboard the Bowes train!!

Do us proud kid :D

Going out on a limb and thinking Ablett, May and Lynch could be All Australian in 2017.

Also thinking of putting a lazy $100 on Ablett/GWS for the Brownlow and Premiers in 2017.

I reckon it will be Rischitelli's last year on the list with a possible transition into a coaching role in 2018. Great servant for the GCS. Additionally who is the rookie upgrade?

The surprise is he isn't ready to go for start of the pre-season games given he played some games last year

Either his knee is completely f****d or the Hawks are knee whisperers who have knee repair down to an art form by predicting the round he will be ready by.

Either way I'm happy to be moving on and dodging this bullet. Pressure is on him if he doesn't get up for this year given the Hawks jettisoned Mitchell and Lewis to fit in his bloated contract.

"He has been out for a long time, so Jaeger is not going to push things because he knows the result at the back end of the year is going to be pretty special," Burt said.

He knows? Have they made the finals already? With that type of arrogance he and Hawthorn were made for each other.
