to everyone on the goldy, brissy & northern nsw, stay safe this evening with the weather. roads are atrocious, fingers crossed it's just a bit of a late summer storm and damage through flooding is limited.

thoughts go out to anyone located up north as well who have been impacted by cyclone debbie.

Gee the Bont is good to watch.

Hypothetically if we would have had that pick #4 in the draft or if dogs would have passed on him, would Suns have picked him? Instead we got KK at #5....just one of many reasons a case could be made for the Suns being cursed.

You would think we would have, but we didn't need to recruit a midfielder in 2013 draft, we had Martin, Jaeger, Prestia, Bennell, Swallow, Rischitelli and Brownlow winning midfielder. We had the correct strategy at the time, whether we picked the right player is always debatable through a players career. We didn't expect to have most of the players I mention get traded out or have long injuries as they have the past couple years.

I think the rumour at the time was that the Suns were pretty keen on drafting the Bont leading into the 2014 draft. Then again, Guy McKenna was the coach back then and he may have only had eyes for defenders.

Who knows.

Bit harsh on KK, he's definitely not alone in not showing his best for several years

Obviously he's no Bont but having him is hardly a curse :p

Hard to have a dig at a guy for being drafted AFTER a superstar.

If we are talking top GC recruiting mistakes this is my top 5:

1. Dyson Heppell drafted #8 (2010) - players we drafted before him - Swallow, Bennell, Day, Caddy > Heppell is now an AFL captain - Bennell had family issues, Day was a project and Caddy was a man-child meat axe

2. Clayton swapping picks 3 and 10 (2015) [Oliver and Weidiemen] for effectively 6 (2015) and 8 (2016) [Ah Chee and Brodie] - I hate this pick swap as the rumour was that Scott Clayton loved Clayton Oliver who was yet to bolt up the draft order and wanted to have his cake and eat it too by getting a future pick and hoping Oliver would be their at #6 - as a result we miss out on a generational explosive contested inside/outside player (Jordan Lewis and Max Gawn said he has the best touch of any young player they have ever seen) and get a 'nice' player in Ah Chee that we could have got at #10 anyway. To get out of jail on this pick either or both of Scrimshaw or Brodie will have to be damn good players.

3. Leslie drafted #20 (2013) - was a reach as no one expected him to go so high and we had pick #27 to get him - missed out on either Matt Crouch (#23) and Zac Merrett (#26) (both had older brothers in the AFL system which is a sign that they should know what being an AFL player is about if they have the talent)

4. Lemmens drafted #27 (2013) - could have got him in the rookie draft and got Leslie at #27 plus either Matt Crouch or Zach Merrett

5. Jack Martin (mini-draft #1 2012) - not a mistake as such but it was either him or Jesse Hogan - when in doubt take the good big guy over the good little guy. Jesse Hogan is about to go to next level top 5 key forwards and Jack Martin is still finding his way at becoming a good AFL player

EDIT: throw in giving up Dayne Zorko for Jared Brennan somewhere in there as well

There are a few posters on the main board who actually do give our situation a bit of thought and provide a meaningful comment but it's so exhausting reading posts by every Tom, Dixon and Harley on how we never should've sacked McKenna and Eade clearly could never have worked out business as usual in Year 7 :$:$:$

McKenna's method to turn us into another West Coke E-Girls is half the reason why we are currently in the position we are. Despite the occasional rare ray of sunlight, this club has blown harder than cyclone Debbie.

As hard as it may be for the coaching staff it would be foolish and counter productive to return to the "golden days" of football when a big loss meant abuse and being flogged on the track.

The task at hand for players and coaching staff is to get the team up against a Hawks side who are the most vulnerable they have been in a decade.

Clear heads are required to steady the ship and make logical changes where necessary that will help get the 4 points.

I think too many players receive "superstar status" which is not warranted and which may give supporters and players a unrealistic expectation of talent and what is realistically achievable.

This week may tell the future of coaching staff and players at GCS.

Well for starters he had a disposal efficency of about 37% in under 18s which was putrid. Secondly, the reason he went at 18 because he is a man child and his ceiling as a player isn't much higher than his current level whereas someone like Will Brodie has a lot more upside.
