Yes, that's him. I watched the match highlights on Youtube to see if I could get his guernsey number (#33). Knew diddly about him until that pre-season Melbourne vs Bulldogs game last week (haven't properly picked apart the Carlton game yet). Looks the goods. Definitely like the wild beard / bushman-look that's trending thanks to Max Gawn, too lol.

They've all gone the Ned Kelly look.

Side note: The Brisbane women's team are about to go 4-0, which means the AFL Women's Grand Final could very well be held at Metricon this year. Also, another Gold Coast girl in Jordan Membrey debuted today for the Lions. That means all five GC girls on Brisbane's list are playing today.

I know its only their first pre-season game so you can't look into it much, but that Freo/WCE game didnt help explain why Freo decided to cut Barlow. They had 1 player (Fyfe) with 15 or more touches compared to West Coasts 13 with 15+, and after watching Barlow coast through last week picking up easy touches in his first game back from surgery I feel like Freo could really use a matured body defensive midfielder to help Fyfe out and teach the kids. And its not like they didnt have any other spuds to cut, lookign at the guys out there today.

But Im not complaining ;)

My guess is they are rebuilding and saw Barlow as player who was not in their future sides when they once again become competitive.

Once again I am concerned with the poor foot skills of Rory Thompson. I fully appreciate his positive attributes but the Lions game highlighted to me Thompson does not have foot skills that are good enough if the GCS are serious final contenders. His first option is a handball followed by a kick down the line and then a kick to the safe fat side. When he was sprinting out of defence and had to hit a target he found the opposition. My concern is not that single kick it is his ball drop. It is poor and means it is not reliable. You cannot carry footballers who can not kick to AFL standard. I know he is a favourite and by all accounts a ripper of a bloke but I am looking at the football aspect of Rory and not his character. I acknowledge he is unlikely to be dropped but I think his glaring inadequate foot skills are a major concern.

Agree on his kicking weakness but he also has some real strengths as a key defender. If he plays well, lets May do more stuff.
Less worried this year than in 2 or 3 years when we hopefully have a team that is pushing for top 4. Much harder to carry a non-kicker when you are trying to win 17 games instead of 12.

Fair call Stroppy and you are 100 percent correct. It just concerns me that a player like Jack Leslie is not being given a fair crack to see if he is good enough as a KPD. I suppose it will work itself out in its own time. I will continue to watch Thompson and determine if he can continue to be considered a player in GCS best 22.

In fairness I don't think Leslie is much better. I'm of the belief you can have one pure stopper in your team but that's just because hardly any teams have two key defenders with elite or very good disposal.

Perhaps Rory should be looking to handball off to the swinging smalls like Harbrow and Saad when he takes a mark in the backline? All too many times I've seen him take a mark in the backline and try to kick down the wings, which often results in a turnover or a throw-in. Even handballing to May would be a better option in that circumstance. However, his overall attributes as a key defender are still better than Leslie's so you can't drop him.

Food for thought.

noticed the Dockers are forced to play S.Hill on the inside... he's as outside as you could get. Outside of Fyfe they have no inside mids.

Lachie Neale's pretty easy to miss.

:p

Do you reckon we will go for another big $$$ marquee player once Gaz leaves/retires at years end?

Or we use the cash to lock up all of our Rd1 draftees plus other existing players long term?

Honestly, I think we'll dangle a carrot out and just see if we get any bites, especially if we do have a more successful year and have money to spend on players. But we won't get Fyfe or Dusty, who are the 2 'big fish' (I think they'll both re-sign), although its fun when the trade rumours aren't about Suns players for a change.

Our first priority would be ensuring we can keep the younger guys who are our potential future marquees especially Wright/Brodie/Fiorini etc. which we have done this season, but if a player made it known that they were interested and would add to the team (think Hanley) or were an A-/B+ level player then I don't see why we wouldn't go hard to get them.

Really just depends on how we go this year and whether any holes in the list emerge.

If we're after big FAs, I'd prefer we target for need within a premiership window - this as opposed to spending huge wads of cash on some flavour of the month so we can merely limp into the Top Eight. The reality is that FAs are at a premium, so simply getting a star midfielder when you have plenty of midfielders developing into stars is a huge waste of money.

If we're after a FA, I'd prefer to chase a big backman (doesn't have to be AA, just better than Rory Thompson), a Ruckman, or a Small Forward. That's what we really need. We don't need more star midfielders.

All make sense, but come on it's Nat Fyfe! He is like David Swallow at his best times 2! As for premiership window, if we are not knocking the door down at the end of this season I will be surprised.. I reckon Fyfe can teach Bowes, Ainsworth, Scheer and particularly Brodie a thing or three..
When all the superstars in the comp are at their best, it's Fyfe and daylight second.. he is a beast! Throw the kitchen sink at him.. if we have to lose Aaron Hall or someone like that because of salary constraints then so be it!

Franklin has worked ok and Boyd worked alright last year at the dogs
As far as I know not a single team that has gone for a top 10 player has won a premiership soon after (which is surely the goal when luring the player...)

I take your point on Boyd but he's not really the same 'type', even if he was on massive money

Even so, it seems that that is the only example of it achieving the ultimate success - and that was quite a freak event

In other non-CEO related news, Kochie has continued to sound like a broken record over Guernsey-gate, saying this morning that the AFL now has to make a decision on the matter because it is disrupting the rest of the venture..... even though I thought that the AFL has already said that as the home team, we will be in red.

If you want the distraction to stop Kochie, just stop talking about it. Your the one who is making it a distraction with your constant whining.

Still sounding like he's made a massive **** up and is trying to claw back respect.
