As someone from NSW, I thought you would appreciate that removing anything related to Shitney from their name is in the clubs best interest
Accurate.

But also have a weird thing for teams having a location (Ex: Auckland Warriors > New Zealand Warriors > Warriors / North Melbourne > Kangaroos > North Melbourne) calling them "The Giants" formally just sounds silly to me.

While I'm on the subject, I have a similar issue with the media insisting on calling us "the Gold Coast Suns" as if it's all one word, This happens to GWS and other teams as well but obviously I've noticed it most for us. Would it kill them to refer to us as "Gold Coast" or "The Suns" individually? Surely I'm not the only one that's noticed (Ex: Today's game between Carlton and theGoldCoastSuns)

I think its more to do with the public perception of the Gold Coast. They're living in the 90's. Believing the Gold Coast is just a tourist beach town. When in reality it is a thriving city in its own right. I think we're the 6th largest city in australia?
It could also be we have a catchy name?
I mean it is pretty boring and depressive to keep saying Carlton Blues.
Actually now that you mention it i think any interstate team is reffered to with the full name. Must be a melbourne thing.

It has to do with grammar. We don’t say “I come from Gold Coast” because it’s “the Gold Coast”. I guess once they spit out that mouthful then adding Suns is reflexive. Ever since I can remember it has been “the Sydney Swans” but rarely “the Hawthorn Hawks” and never “the St Kilda Saints”.

Imagine if the AFL had have tried to name us the South East Queensland Suns (SEQS = the Sex)? Or the East Coast Suns?

Still a better name than the 17ers...

Now that 17er has linked that to the 49ers name I hate it even more. But can't fault him for his passion to the cause! Raises a lot of good points. Terrible name though

I know hey? You don't realize it until you realize it.

Having lived is Shitney for a few years now i have been to many Giants games and I am worried about there future. They have an awesome team and still can’t get a crowd, my junior club i coach at gives away free tickets to giants games by the truck full. Once they start to drop down the ladder it could get ugly.

I hope I’m wrong as I have a soft spot for them but I fear I’m not.
Nah, I think they'll be fine. The GC has always had AFL supporters, but the real challenge was getting those supporters to start supporting the Suns. Their children then start following their local club, and give it another decade and you'll start seeing constant crowds of locals.

Outside of central Sydney, as I'm sure you'd see, the support for AFL as a sport is slim. The challenge the AFL and GWS has is to try and convert and appeal to people who've either never heard of the sport, refer to it as GayFL, or are staunch soccer fans. It's going to be a slow burn, and I honestly can't see the Giants having a huge following until several decades from now.

Both clubs were a generational investment, but the Giant's investment is multigenerational. Queenslanders are a bunch of bandwagoners, and as soon as the Suns make it to finals, expect a 20k+ crowd each week. Don't expect that from Sydneysiders, because they're a bunch of campaigners.

You had 32 NFL teams to pick from and you chose Tampa Bay? I suppose it's ok if you like wearing pirate hats, but seriously can you name one Bucs player who is a household name? Then again, nobody actually hates the Buccaneers because they have never done anything except for once.

Roberto Aguay........ Oh wait

I was trying to compare our Evans/Jameis WR/QB tandem to the 49ers. But then I realised you don't have either.

Yeah always felt this was the case, will be interesting to see our crowds when we are playing prelims consistently and they are bottom of the ladder

Jamies Winston , mike Evans , DeSean Jackson to name a few , but I’m biased as I support them to.

I’m not a massive NFL follower but I do know that they won a Super Bowl once and plenty of Clubs haven’t won one so they can’t be that bad.

They follow a similar story to the SUNS. Every few years a new coach and plenty of promise through the draft and free agency. Only to be seasonally let down

But 2018 will bring good things :D:D

And we have a logo which is actually inspiring. Not like the dull garbage dished up above

I will give you DeSean Jackson because he’s mentioned in Silver Linings Playbook. Probably not household name material, but a big name. Here in Australia, ask anyone if they can name a Bucs player past or present and you’ll get crickets.

Everybody knows a 49er player though and it won’t be long before Jimmy Garoppolo is the most mentioned name on the Internet if it isn’t already. The guy hasn’t even lost a game in his career!

Actually, wasn’t Pirates one of the names originally mooted for the Suns?

Aguero is the Bucs equivalent of Jarryd Hayne at the Niners and the Suns with Karmichael Hunt. At least San Fran got a massive return on their investment with the Haynetrain selling 38 jerseys. Wonder if Jesse Joyce is a fan?

That said, was it Aguero or are all Bucs kickers cursed?

Speaking of other sports. How funny is it that after being reamed as the source of all of McLarens problems over the last few years, Honda have powered a ToroRosso to a 4th in the F1s - a better result than much bigger team McLaren managed in three years, despite their claims that they had the best chassis in F1

I thought the NFL disbanded in 94 when William Perry and Joe Montana retired
It's still a thing?
Joe Cool didn’t retire in 1994, he was traded to the Chiefs, which is almost the same. He did win against the 49ers and came within a game of making the Super Bowl that SF won. It’s one of the biggest fantasy match ups around.

Our kickers are cursed. But thats about to change when we sign Piniero this year

Being a kicker for the Buccs is like having the no.1 jumper for the Suns , there’s something evil about it.
