Only have to look at Dane Swan. Saw him a few years ago (when he was at his best), with his shirt off, the word that sprung to mind was "slob".
Having said that, as you mention, skinfolds can be used for tracking. That's to say, if a person suddenly stacks a heap of fat on, that's not good, as opposed to people just built that way. I think Greeny has stacked a fair bit on over summer, but there are other indicators that he has lost some fitness.

Well said. Both Green, Rocky and Swan look 'overweight' in comparison with the average AFL player. However, Swan and Rocky can run out games like there is no tomorrow, whilst Josh Green looks well below the pace of the game this year.

To talk about Green being overweight is fine, but to call him Fatso-Green is disgusting.

Lift your game Hysteria25, show a bit of class and respect.

You are not on Facebook.

'Fatso-Green' was clearly a joke. I have plenty of respect for Josh Green but the fact of the matter is, he has returned this season overweight and unfit. He is a professional athlete and there is no excuse for the way he has turned up this year. Even Christensen, who has been injured majority of the preseason runs harder than Green.

If we want to be a successful footy club, there should be no excuses for stuff like this. Send him to the ressies for a while and play someone who has tried to improve themselves over the preseason.

Many of these posts re observably overweight players completely miss the bleeding point.

Players do not become overweight by eating one Subway's meal. They do not become out of tune overnight.

It takes time to stack on beef. On this I am an expert, so stay with me on this poppy, as my 4yo grandson would say.

How the hell does a standing army of forward, back, centre, ruck, skills etc etc coaches along with a multitude of fitness, nutrition, consultant and running coaches, physio's, medicos, and so on allow things to deteriorate to the extent that according to my very own eyes I saw Green simply pull up when allegedly chasing a WC backman 2 weeks ago? Just gave it away- too hard- someone else- done my bit.

As a particular example, why is McStay, who has the potential to be something special, allowed to stroll around the forward line and apart from the odd attempted spectacular, do basically bugger all the rest of the time. No defence, no chase, no blocking, no leads, no nothing really. Unless I am given the chance to take a speccie over someone's head, not interested.

And McStay is far, far from alone. I haven't seen the runner out there delivering a directive from the coach to spark up or else in his case or anyone else's for that matter.

I lost confidence in the so-called experts when many years ago, pre-LM IIRC, I saw Adrian Fletcher take the field for us after an extended injury lay off at least 10kg's overweight. This amount of extra avoir dupois does not occur over one or two weeks. And how is any of this permitted to happen within a so-called professional environment?

All of which is by way of saying that when unfitness occurs, IMHO it is probably symptomatic of more endemic internal problems.

I think MacMum was saying that it's not ok to make that joke ... and that it was disrespectful to make that joke.

Hanley is a hard gut runner, Paparone runs his guts out whenever he's not trying to manage his defensive positioning, Stef works his ass off to make space and NRobbo doesn't shirk.
I don't think we lack runners per se. There may be something in the criticism that our guys are out of condition, but for every Green there is someone like Stef who is in the best condition of his life. Also, for second year guys, Cutler and Robbo are neither small nor timid with their size.
I think a lot of what look like physical issues are tied up in this frustrating confidence-inexperience-indiscipline cycle. My vent is I'm sick of feeling like I have no idea how we exit that cycle.

If Green being chubby is one of our issues, I propose the following:

Give him a chair in the goalsquare.

Problems solved by this solution - big body up forward, height up forward, goal kicking accuracy.

Sure. I also think it's disrespectful for someone being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars a year to show up for work unfit for their job, so I will stand by my joke.

On that note - Is it more disrespectful for my to call Josh Green a fatso, or for people to call Mitch Robinson a spud? At least Robbo tries to be the best footballer he possibly can be, not seeing that kind of effort from Green.

I think they're both the same - cheap.

The difference between Rocky, Swan and Green is that Rocky and Swan are there for their gut running and their accumulating possessions. Green is there for his burst of speed and to burn off his opponent on the rebound. He can;t do that when he is overweight. And he is clearly overweight (for a professional athlete), he has stomach fat. He will never be ripped, not his body type.

Culture is bad if our leaders (Rocky, Hanley, Redden, Rich, Beams D., etc) are not telling these blokes to stop eating junk food. A bit of junk food after a game is acceptable l reckon but for the rest of the week there should be none of that. They get paid a lot of money.

Couldn't care less about the Subway thing.
