Right, gonna vent. Dyson Heppell gets named Essendons captain today. That has to be the second worst draft blunder behind Tambling. Dyson Heppell was just so ******* obvious. We had the kid training with us FFS. But no, we go for some unknown that Francis gets a hard on for. We are still feeling the implications of that ******* bust of a pick on toilet paper hammys Conca. If Jackson the useless campaigner wasn't so inept we wouldn't of been forced to trade pick 6 last year for starters. I don't wanna hear Conca is good, blah, blah, blah, he's not. He's a bust. Heppell is a gun. He should of been a tiger. **** me.

In my opinion, we really need to stop dwelling on past draft mistakes.

Yes we made some stupid errors, but it is behind us now and our drafting is starting to actually be smart/ a lot better. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems to me our days of poor drafting are slowly drifting behind us. Thing is constant dwelling about Conca over Heppell etc etc, is just draining and depressing, it does nothing to fix the cause. Its not going to magically turn back the clock so RFC can fix their drafting mistakes.

So just, put it behind you, move on and refrain from bringing it up.

There's jut something about him that doesn't quite sit well with me. I don't believe he is going to be an out and out gun. I think he will be solid without being spectacular.

Some interesting points, with another view on the subject.

N. Riewoldt is the heart and soul of St. Kilda and could almost be used as an inspirational motivator in the same vein as B. Murphy. He is in so many ways to St. Kilda the equivalent of what Richo was to us. Not to mention he is still in exceptional form and is tracking nicely for a fluid transition development wise for their young forwards.

Montagna, not as much as above, but still a required player in my opinion, with money to spend and two first round draft picks (they will look heavily at mids) this year, he will be phased out smoothly one would think.

I still stand by my opinion/prediction however, also I stated I'd put my neck on the line and even said they could get the spoon for all I know, but again time will tell. I don't want them to succeed (although they would be my second behind Richmond) and I'm all too aware of thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

so the dogs should not have played Morris , Boyd, picken Murphy before injury if we go by that logic.
All clubs have their share of vets and weather its full on rebuild or challenging for a flag it has been shown time and time again they are needed. Just look what happened to Melbourne when they cut just about every older player out of their club.

The old hands lead and guide, the young blokes follow and learn and eventually take over is that not how it should work.So many people have hang ups with older players

We were keen on Heppell, but he told us he would much rather play for Essendon, and we felt that it was better to draft someone who would be able to commit to the club wholeheartedly than only halfheartedly hence why we passed on Hep. At least, that's what I've head from a couple of people.

If we had drafted him, he would have demanded a trade to Essendon by the time his contract was up. I don't like it, but that's life. Life wasn't meant to be fair.

Exactly. That's why Melbourne have taken so long to get their crap together. They had access to some of the best kids in the draft pool, but a combination of poor recruiting and bad player development screwed them over.

Compare that to clubs who had a terrific development system in Geelong, Sydney etc, and they had a remarkable success rate for speculative picks, because development often trumps drafting.

A lot would have changed once embedded at a club ... they all want to go somewhere else ... until they are drafted!

Another thing to consider. Our development is terrible. If we had drafted Matthew Pavlich, Buddy Franklin, Dyson Heppel, and Nat Fyfe there's every possibility we could have turned them into duds. Everyone loves to have a go at an unsuccessful clubs drafting and recruiting because hindsight drafts are always easy to do.

We would not have made Pavlich and Franklin into ordinary players ... but likely would have f***** around by playing Fyfe at half back for six years.

I've dealt with plenty of TAC Cup players. including one or two in my own family, they're all just happy to get drafted and realise, as much as they wopuld like it, they have a mere 5.5 per cent chance of landing at the club they support.
Even if Heppell had left after two years, his trade value would have been significantly more than Conca's has ever been, including what Conca wouold fetch now ... which I remind you is nothing!
