We used to complain about not making the finals. Now it's win a final (making the finals was a way bigger bogey). Once we win a final it will be a flag and once we win a flag it will be it's too long since we won back to back.

Wow, you went through those years ay. I imagine that Richmond supporters in those days had no clue that this kind of failure was yet to come because they were so used to Richmond being a successful side.

Yeah that's why you probably find us so vocal on here and think were just whinging. When you are used to success failure for long periods can have an impact.
From 75 till 79 we went through a bad spell but we got out of it and won the flag in 80 only for collingwood to bud there noses in and stuff up our playing list and the rest is history.

Ben Griffiths to have a long awaited breakout year.
Shai Bolton will easily have the most impact of ALL AFL players drafted last year.
Hampson to become elite, while averaging four possessions and one mark per game.
Caddy to be our best recruit from Geelong since Graeme Landy.
Jake Batchelor to become the best half back flanker in the game.
Ben Lennon to silence the knockers.
Damien Hardwick to reinvent himself as a mix of Tom Hafey, David Parkin and Ron Barrassi.
And was going to say Prestia makes us forget Deledio until I realised Prestia was already better than Deledio four years ago.

Lol, the optimism of us Richmond supporters is one powerful thing isn't it. I wish the club matched our expectations for once. They fall short most years, let alone breaking even.

I think most of us have this glimmer of optimism no matter how negative we may be, but looking at your list, I wonder if we yet again have managed to delude ourselves into thinking we are on the up again, myself included...

I just want to see a competitive Richmond. I follow other clubs like Chelsea and the Steelers (although not as much as I follow Richmond). Overall, I am content with how they are going. Chelsea obviously does well most years, but Pittsburgh is at least competitve for many years even though they don't win it every year.

I want Richmond to become at least a club like that, where they play finals quite regularly. Meaning, some years they don't win a final, other years they do but don't make the Grand Final. In other years, they don't make finals at all. Other years they make a Grand Final but lose. Some years, they win a Grand Final. A team like that now is West Coast, so I would be OK if Richmond were like West Coast in terms of success.

Back-to-back is nice, but I am content if they become a club like I stated above. Relatively successful even though they don't taste success every year.

How Richmond are right now though is that they don't even win finals anymore, and when they make one, there has to be some sort of an embarrassment that is attached to it that takes the gloss out of it (eg. Losing to 9th in 2013, 43-0 in the first quarter in 2014 and 3 EF losses in a row in 2015). Like, come on Richmond. Stand up for yourself and do something. When do you draw the line in the sand of mediocrity and push through? I feel like they can break out of this mediocrity cycle, but I don't know what is stopping them.

They have made significant changes, so let's see if they do this year. I have probably said this for many years, but let's see.

Don't want to get people down about Richmond by the way. If you are optimistic then go for it. I am optimistic too about this season. I just have said that many times before so do have my reservations when it comes to optimism in regards to Richmond.

You don't want to be some wannabe Essendon ponce who is basically a soft **** and deep down they know it. Or some loser Hawthorn supporter who would trade flags for a decent set of colours that aren't shit and piss. Funnily enough, Carlton are getting their taste of humble pie, and they can eat another shit sandwich courtesy of the RFC in round 1.

Stare any campaigner in the eye who gives you shit about the Tigers and tell them that you don't care how long it's been since we won a flag, we're still better than them, and they will admit it too.

i can imagine following one that has only won 2 finals in my entire existence. Anyone under 40 (would be 5 when we last made a gf) only knows richmond as being the worst performed club in the league. Given life expectancy is around 80ish, that is statistically half the population.

An infinite stream of d*** measuring contests about Tigers Player X being better than Demons Player Y, Richmond FC having better kids than the Western Bulldogs, more premierships historically than St Kilda or Brisbane, and our last decade of drafting being super because North Melbourne once picked a guy who didn't pan out.
We continually look for comparisons to hide our inadequacy and never actually get to the core, let alone address problems.
Stay tuned for mid-March when the inevitable Cotchin being better than Murphy and Martin being better than Gibbs comparisons dominate the Richmond threads.

If you are unable to see that it's been a bleak 35 years and you have to go clutching at straws to find a comparison to try and comfort yourself, you are not really addressing the problem.

going on 29. in my life we have won 2 finals, 1 of which i was too young to even remember. obviously winning a flag rates more highly than simple finals wins, but on both counts we are the worst since 6 years before i was even born, and in my lifetime only a club that existed for 7 years is worse. I dont care about stuff that happened half a lifetime ago, i cannot experience or enjoy that, All i know is richmond being shit. There is absolutely NO metric (other than membership numbers....woopie) in which we are better than another club since 1982.

Im glad for you older blokes who have seen (any) good times. good for you that you got to see and experience that. Myself (and realistically anyone under 40) have not seen richmond do anything other than be the most poorly performed club in the league.

There is absolutely NO metric (other than membership numbers....woopie) in which we are better than another club since 1982.

It's hard to know what's worse. Never having seen success, or actually seeing some (three flags in my lifetime) and then watching the club totally balls it up, only to keep making the same mistakes over and over and over and over again.
The way we managed to stuff up with the world at our feet in '80 (they were talking a dynasty a-la Hawthorn and Essendon) yet we botched it big time.

All i can say is hang tough. I am 45. I also lived through heaps of shit years, more than you even . Simply the club cant change the past.

Simply we have played 3 final series in 4 years. Yeah we did not win any but there are about 10 clubs who cant say they were good enough to qualify at least.

Simply the clubs improving imo. Little steps but we are on the right track imo.

Why, becuase '81 was the start of thye era that currently defines us. Not '80, not '74 or '67, but '81 defines the era that is a lack of success.

Reality is we are all Tigers supporters who haven't seen success in many decades... We ALL want success and flags, absolutely no doubt..

Potting the club for all and sundry is just fools gold and counter productive to the good that we are doing in some areas.

Each administration owns their period so to lump it all together and say we have been awful for 36 years the board must go is nonsense, obviously people have opinions on THEIR period and that's a fair discussion point, each to their own and inevitably disagreements will occur.

We all want success, some stay positive and some cant, that's the reality, trying to depress everyone and essentially state we are crap and have been for so long so of course its going to be true going forward is ridiculous...

More balance required on both sides, however the preseason is for every club a time to dream of the potential season ahead, so to spend months calling supporters out about past 36 years is not only poor but for above reasons nonsense!!
