but i know every true collingwood supporter does have this question linger in the back of their minds from time to time.

How different would the 90's had been had the tragedy that occured in 1991 not occured, and millane played on through the mid 90s.
1992 is one season that springs to mind. We finished 3rd IIRC and we got knocked out in a disgraceful finals system. Millane was arguably our best player at the time. Take out the best player out of any side and the effect would be noticable. Could we have pinched another flag? would the dark years of 95-2000 been as dark? It couldve possibly have made a difference...

Discuss.

you've seen 2 since 1990 id like to hope.

If it's premierships you're referring to, id like to think we can have another crack within the next 5 years. I dont think anyone wouldve expected 2002/2003 to be GF appearances, who knows what could happen.

I think it is widely acknowleged that the '93 side was far better than the '90 side.
I have heard McGuane say that with Pants in that side they could have been a power for at least 3 years. He said Pants was a certainty to be captain at some stage.

I think the death of Pants was also the death of Collingwood for a few years. I don't think players got over it for a long time.
Dennis Banks has still not got over it.

Eddie's book 'Pants' is worth a read.

It could have easily made a difference because I thought he was personally our Most Valuable Player over the course of 1990, and he was definitely captain material over the next 4-5 years. But we would never know..

1993 was a pretty good side.

B: Gayfer - Pert - Christian
HB: Crossica - Kelly - Morwood
C: Brown - Shaw - Wright
HF: Williams - Starcevich - Russell
F: Daicos - Rocca - Mitchell
R: Monkhorst - McGuane - T.Francis
I: McKeown - Kerrison - A.Richardson - M.Richardson - Rowe - M.Fraser - Lehmann - Barwick - Turner - Watson - Woods - McMullin - McCartney

We only lost Banks and Millane from the 1990 flag.

Scott Burns, Jon Hassell, Brett James (who was very handy) were rookies

It must be said that 1993 was a lost opportunity with the premiership race wide open. Essendon finished on top with 13 wins whilst St.Kilda finished 12th with 10 wins (Richmond finished 2nd last with only 4 wins :D ). One of the closest seasons ever.

Our year was dogged by inconsistency. We won our first 4 games of the year and then lost. We won 3 more in a row. After round 9 we were clear 2nd by a game. We then lost 3 in a row. We kept winning a few (by massive margins) and losing a few (by massive margins again such as 83 to NM and 68 to Essendon). We slipped out of the 6 at round 18 after the lose to Essendon. We got back in a round later when we defeated the Saints. We were a game clear. We had a buy in round 20 and slipped out again. We then got flogged by Carlton in round 21.

We needed to defeat Adelaide (over there) to get back into the finals. Backed by Tony Modra with 5 goals, Andrew Jarman and Nigel Smart with 3 apeice and with Tony McGuiness and Simon Tregenza collecting 30+ possessions each, a galliant Collingwood lost by 4 goals.

Sav Rocca kicked 4, Brad Rowe kicked 3 and Tony Shaw was the leading possession getter with 26.

It was a real lost opportunity because we had a decent team that year. We had a good blend of youth and experience.

which coach exactly are you referring to?

If tony shaw...Would he have ever takenover if collingwood mounted a challenge/won a premiership in 92/93?

leigh matthews wouldtnve been sacked.

Who knws... abit of sliding doors.... but he could still be coach today?

1992 was definitely the year of PIE - we never had !!!

Very even season in 1992....no absolute standouts even though Geelong kicked huge scores !

We looked really tired by the end of the year though....Manson,Starcevich & Brown (especially) played with stomach muscle inj, Daicos fell away after birth of 1st child...despite unearthing Sav & Fraser.
Season de-railed severely by loss to Melb @ Vic Park.

Geelong - We still had a game plan and players to be competitive and beat them at their peak (89-95) !!
WCE - courageous mid-season win at Subi. Came from 4th to win flag after narrowly beat Hawthorn at Subi.
Haw - could never beat 'em despite how we & they were travelling !
Foots - similar teams but Pies with a bit more polish
St K - loss of Kelly mid-year was crucial. Leowe & Lockett had a picnic in Elim Final.

Ahh memories of Dazza....Pants was legend and absolute diamond in the rough. I started going to the footy in the mid to late 80's basically my early teen years and Daicos/millane/ Banks and dare I say Shaw were symbolic of what Collingwood was.
