Portfolio VFA / AFA Alternate history

The VFA was on the brink of death as a competition, and fought drastically to remain a force in the Australian football world. The VFA did all it could to bring back some of it’s original clubs by using all the resources it could. Some of the smaller clubs in the VFA even offered themselves up to the big clubs in the VFL on the conditions that they moved back to the VFA.

There will be 18 teams spread across the country. 0 completely new franchises, all teams have a history in one way or another

I left out that the original VFA teams are based from what was left in the 1925 VFA season.

Williamstown Seagulls

The Seagulls never even considered leaving the VFA, they wanted to stick by the competition that have called home for years, no matter what. This may have been the best decision they had ever made. The Williamstown people were shocked by the decision to remain in the "minnow league", with many fans boycotting games until Williamstown decided to move over. But they didn't, and the fans that did boycott were left red faced as Williamstown dominated on-field, winning premiership after premiership, the Gulls bandwagon was bigger than it ever had been, there was one obvious result.

They needed to upgrade the clubrooms

Port Melbourne

Very well off financially, and while that helped off field, on field, the club was very mediocre for many years, long droughts without flags and purchasing players did not help, the only reason that they are still a standalone club is that they had the financial backing of their community and fans throughout the tough times in the VFA. They had tried to enter the VFL early days, but no deal. Port Melbourne also poured thousands of dollars out of their own pocket for years into ensuring the VFA could withstand the competition of the VFL, the VFA has since payed them back all their debts since many of the VFL clubs had returned.

Traditional blue jumper with red stripes. Due to the manufacturers template in 2004, Port Melbourne had to drop the stripes on the sides, so Port had a meeting which determined how the new guernseys would look, they decided to go with thicker stripes, resulting int 3 thick stripes across the front, and cut off at the back.

it was deemed that a simple inverse wasn't enough to solve clashes, so Port decided to use white as a base, and uses their word mark, which was voted upon by club players, officials and members.

Id probably prefer the clash without the logo, but the way youve done it looks great! Perhaps add a white border around the red text too, if possible.

Have you tried having a go with logos? Similar idea to my NEAFL portfolio, Id love to see some concepts you come up with for how logos change over history

i thought i'd have it similar to last year(?) when they had the celebratory logo over the main jumper, i really liked that, also, it looked like it needed, something in the white because it was very empty, i'd have had a logo if i was making them*. a stroke on the white text isn't noticeable enough over the blue line when it's a thickness that doesn't impact the rest of the word that's already over whit, which makes the red almost unreadable because the stroke covers most of it.

Coburg Lions

Struggled financially off-field, with many merger talks with teams from much lower competitions, but none of them wanted to take on the financial burden that came along with it. Coburg were floated around to be a relocation team, and have their entire debt paid for by the VFL to move to Sydney and be the VFL’s first interstate team, but the Lions were resistant to join the VFL and abandon the competition that had sacrificed just as much as they had to keep afloat, and their loyal fan base, though small in size, they were just able to keep the Lions alive for many years. They didn’t want to let their fans down.

Northcote Hawks

The Hawthorn Football Club were struggling on field and off-field, and the VFL were floating them around as another possibility to be moved to Sydney, Hawthorn were resistant, and open to any offer to keep them in Melbourne. Northcote were also struggling off-field, but on-field, they were a very dominant team of that era. The two clubs agreed to merge, and be based in Northcote, and take the name of the Hawks, to become the Northcote Hawks. This was the second club that the VFA had successfully stopped from moving to Sydney, and the VFL was furiously trying to get a team up north to expand the game and claim the win over the VFA.

OK, not the best timing bringing this back with 2 others up and going ATM, but here goes, Collingwood Magpies!

Collingwood/ Brunswick Magpies​

The Collingwood Football Club continued to be a massive success on and off-field for the VFL, winning premierships every other year, but, they wanted more. This was in the time where the VFA was offering some of the clubs to be devoured by clubs in the VFL, on the condition they re-joined the VFA. Collingwood saw this as a massive opportunity, to take over another club and potentially help put an end to long time rivals, Essendon, by helping the VFA take over the dominance of Australian Football in Victoria. The club became known as the Collingwood Magpies, and have a reserves team based in Brunswick, named the Brunswick magpies.

Home:

Collingwood home jumper prior to 2001, but using a red cuff to recognise the Brunswick Football Club, red being a colour used early in the clubs history.

Clash:*

A mix between Brunswick's early red and black striped jumper, and their black and white hooped jumper. The jumper was met with criticism at first, but the Collingwood fans grew to love it, after the Magpies won 2 straight Grand Finals wearing it.

*totally forgot about that St Kilda heritage jumper from a couple years ago when I made this.

The Geelong association Football club had pondered along on the VFA for years, not making an impact anywhere, not struggling off-field, but not doing well either. They had never won a grand final, though they also hadn’t ended up last since 1925. The Geelong Cats on the other hand, had been very successful on and off-field for many years in the VFL, and had sensed the momentum shift from the VFL to the VFA with Collingwood’s move, they decided to join them in the VFA the year after. Over the space of two years, the VFA had taken two major teams and supporter bases from the VFL, and yet the VFL still thought they were dominating the VFA, having that year, sent South Melbourne to Sydney.

Home:

Real Geelong home jumper, but with white shorts as full time home, consistent with Collingwood and maybe some other upcoming teams.

Clash:

A slightly lighter navy used for the stripes for them to still be there, and using solid socks, rather than stripes to minimise the white.

The kangaroos could see that with the Cats and Magpies gone, the VFL was on the brink of death, they needed to get out, but despite recent success, they didn’t have enough money to just run back to the VFA. North had to bide their time, they made it through a few years, pinching pennies, until, eventually, in the last year that the VFA were leaving the deal to take a VFA club and take it over, North took Prahan. Had the Two Blues been left to go it alone another year, they’d have folded due to a lack of on-field success and a fan base quickly abandoning them, but the take over by North Melbourne allowed the two teams to become dominant again. The North Melbourne Two Roos became a force in the VFA, winning two flags in their first three years as a single team, under the guideance of North Melbourne’s first premiership coach Ron Barrassi, who moved with the Two Roos, rather than making his return to Melbourne.
