There is a great website out there www.footyjumpers.com that chronicles quite brilliantly the history of each AFL Club's jumpers. This includes the 18 Clubs' jumpers prior to their VFL inclusion (ie their VFA days).
Is there anyone out there interested in doing a VFA themed website similar to the above one? I have done a fair bit of research on VFA jumpers designs but don't have the technology skills to put that research down graphically.

Wizard Waffle has done a lot of great work on VFA jumpers previously. His thread on VFA jumpers should be floating around here somewhere. Personally, I'd love to see a website such as this this come to life.

I've always said I'm happy to add a VFA and or SANFL section to the website if someone can do the research.
Having moved overseas it is impossible to research things like what years Port didn't wear Blue & Red stripes, what Brunswick's Maroon & Blue jumpers looked like and so on.
If you're happy to share what research you have, I could include it on the site.

Excellent work Wizard Waffle. I remember seeing these some years ago on another website but they seem to have been removed. They are certainly a good start to the site. I can see a number of errors and additions needed to be made to make the site correct. However, happy to take advice and correction
Box Hill : Original paneled jumper in 1975 had the mustang facing to the right. Uncertain when it changed to facing the left.
Williamstown : 1888 to 1898 - Blue with Gold sash; 1899 to 1908 Blue jumper with Gold band around stomach; 1909 to 1912 Blue with Gold Vee (in 1910 it had a small WFC monogram on the left breast. 1913 to present - Blue jumper with Gold sash. Not sure if there was ever a jumper with just a monogram on it.
Sandringham: There early jumpers in the VFA were a Gold jumper with two braces of blue and black stripes - blue and black stripes on Gold sleeves.
Camberwell: Seemed to change their jumpers frequently through 30's. 40's and 50's. Original jumper was navy blue. Went from the Footscray jumper to panels with and without monograms. The monogram also changed frequently as did the colour of the mongram. In 1948 they wore a jumper of red, white and blue vertical stripes but in a unique pattern of from L to R of R/W/R/B(middle stripe/R/W/R. Red sleeves and blue cuffs.
Geelong West : White jumper with red GW monogram, cuffs and collars - 1963 to 1988 except 1979 when they wore a white jumper with red Vee, cuffs and collars.
Sunshine: Navy with White yoke 1959 -1977, 1981-1989. Navy with white stylised "S" mongram 1978-1980.
Coburg: Navy jumper with Red sash from left shoulder to right hip. Until the VFA badge was on the jumper, the jumper had a badge with a lion on the right breast.
Frankston : Panels of Red, White and Black panels (L to R), Black back, white cuffs, collars. White dolphin on left breast. Later wore Black jumper with Red and White "GT" vertical stripes on left side. White dolphin on right breast.
Preston: Originally Maroon with navy shorts. From re-entry in 1926 they wore a White jumper with Red central panel. Sleeves varied from all red to white with a red central band. Not certain when they changed to their Red jumper with the White monogram.
West Melbourne: Original jumper was Red and White stripes 1878-1880. Red and White hoops 1899-1907.
Waverley : 1961-1987 Red and Black stripes (black central stripe). Essendon Town Black jumper with Red Sash 1900-1921.
Caulfield : Navy Blue and White Hoops 1965-1974. Royal Blue and White hoops 1975 to 1981??; White jumper with Royal Blue vertical stripes, White sleeves RB cuffs and collars -1982?? to 1987.
Dandenong: Navy jumper with red yoke and "Dandy" badge on left breast below yoke (best club badge ever). 1958 to 1992 Uncertain when the club badge disappeared. 1993-1994 White jumper with broad Red and Navy blue Vee. Red Vee on top of Navy.
Mordialloc: 1958-1977 Red and white hoops. 1978 to 1988 Red and White vertical stripes.
Yarraville: 1928 White jumper with three broad navy hoops (Waist, stomach, shoulders) and red sash (left shoulder to right waist); 1929 White jumper with Navy Blue and Blue Vee on top of Red. 1930 to 1938?? Navy jumper, White YFC letters inside a White stylised football, Red cuffs and collars. 1939 to 1974 Navy jumper with white YFC monogram, red cuffs and collars; 1975-1976 Red jumper, royal blue saddle with a square white badge on left breast with eagle inside. There is also a period where the eagle was inside a white shield on right breast. 1977-1979 Red jumper, Royal Blue saddle with rampant eagle across the front of the jumper. Eagle holding a football with YFC inside. 1980-1983 Red jumper, Royal blue saddle with white swooping eagle across the front of the jumper. Not 100% sure of the post 1975 jumper years. Their last jumper was one of the best.
Port Melbourne: to 1914 was Red and Royal Blue hoops. Uncertain of their uniform in early years in VFA. 1915 to 1935 and 1937 to 1995 Red and Royal Blue stripes. The width of stripes and the central stripe changed at times. In 1936 I believe the uniform was a Red jumper with a Royal Blue Vee with a Red PMFC monogram in the base of the Vee. The monogram consisted of a PMF inside a C.
Werribee: Uncertain of years for some jumpers. 1966 to ?? Black jumper with Yellow Sash (Left shoulder to right hip); 1985 only?? Yellow jumper with Black sash (Left shoulder to right hip), red collar and cuffs. 1987 to 1988 Black jumper with Yellow "W" running from each shoulder and red jumper above "W". 1989 to 1985 Black jumper with Yellow "W" running from each shoulder.
Brighton: 1908 to 1911 Blue jumper with pale blue horizontal stripe just below the shoulder. 1912 to ?? White jumper with Red sash. ??? to 1934 White jumper with Red BFC monogram. Monogram of BF with large C through the BF.1935 to 1939 White jumper with a shallow Red neck Vee. 1940 to 1941 Red jumper with White BFC monogram. Monogram of BF with large C through the BF. 1945 to 1964 Maroon jumper with Gold BFC monogram. Gold cuffs and collars. The monogram changed from BF with a C through it to a large B with smaller F and C on either side of the B.
Northcote: 1908 to 1910 Pale Blue and White striped jumper. 1911 to 1915 and 1921 to 1924 Green jumper with Gold Vee and Gold Yoke. Seems the uniform changed frequently between a Vee and a Yoke. In 1918 to 1920 the club wore a Maroon jumper. 1975 to 1986 - Green and Gold vertical striped jumper. 1987 - Darker Green jumper with two vertical Yellow 'GT strpes' on left hand side of jumper.
Brunswick: 1897 to 1899 - Black jumper with a Red sash. 1900 to 1904 and 1912 to 1991 Black jumper with White Vertical stripes. Black back, black sleeves, white cuffs and collars. 1905 to 1911 Black and White hooped jumper.
Melbourne City: 1912-1913 Maroon (Claret) jumper with white saddle. Saddle was curved up to the shoulders.
Moorabbin: 1951 to 1963 Navy Blue and White Hoops. 1983 to 1987 Royal Blue jumper with three narrow White horizontal bands/stripes. Starting band creating a Royal Blue saddle. Small white kangaroo on the left breast.
Kilsyth: 1982 - Black jumper with red sash (Left shoulder to right hip) red cuffs and collars; 1983-1984 Red jumper with black sash (Left shoulder to right hip) black cuffs and collars
Berwick: 1983 - Navy jumper with white BFC monogram (large B with smaller F and C either side of the B), white cuffs and collars, 1984 - White jumper with Navy BFC monogram (large B with smaller F and C either side of the B), Navy?? or Yellow?? cuffs and collars. 1985 to 1987 - jumper consisting of a white saddle and a series of Navy and White hoops of variable sizes (hard to verbalise), small yellow BFC monogram in the middle of the White saddle, Yellow cuffs and collars. Lower part of the jumper from the hoops to the waist Navy.
Navy jumper with white BFC monogram (large B with smaller F and C either side of the B), white cuffs and collars
Oakleigh: Uncertain of dates of change : 1929 to ?? Purple with large single Gold band around stomach. Purple jumper with Gold OFC monogram, cuffs and collars until 1994. The monogram changed from a large circular O with a smaller C inside the O and an F splitting the two other letters. It was replaced with a mongram of F and C split horizontally by an O that was shaped like an american football. In their later years in the VFA the O became more capsule shaped.
Geelong Association: 1922 Purple jumper with Gold GFA monogram. Large G surrounding FA, gold cuffs and collars. 1923 to 1927 Navy and White hoops.
Prahran: Again, uncertain of dates of jumper changes. Royal Blue jumper with large horizontal single Pale Blue band around stomach. The jumper later had a Pale Blue Vee added to the existing jumper. Some jumpers had the Vee running into the large band around the stomach. Possibly, the jumper lost the band and it was solely a Royal blue jumper with a Pale Blue Vee. Jumper then became a Royal blue jumper with a Pale Blue monogram. The monogram varied. Originally with an old style victorian lettering of interlocking PFC (L to R). Then it became a PF inside a large C. Finally, it became a PFC identical to the Preston monogram. The only jumper I remember was the Royal Blue jumper with a Pale Blue shield on the left breast with Royal Blue PFC monagram in the shield. Royal Blue cuffs and collars. (Simple but classy).
Hope I haven't missed any post 1896 Clubs. Please correct, amend, add to the information.

Oakleigh,
1929-1933 Gold Band;
1934 -1945 the round O monogram;
1946-1947 unknown
1948 the earliest version of the pinched ends of the O, like the Chicago Bears C has.

In an alternate world, if vfl had divisions and never split from the vfa, the round of footy wouldve been awesome:
Round 1 2021 would have been

Friday Night
Williamstown Vs Yarraville
West Melb Vs Werribee
Univ Vs Waverley

Saturday
Traralgon Vs Tas Oakleigh Vs Port Melb, night
Sunshine Vs Springvale Prahon Vs Preston, night
South Melb Vs South Williamstown Richmond Vs St Kilda
South Ballarat Vs Sandringham Preston Vs Northcote

Sunday
yeah you get the drift lol.....

It's very tough to bring something like this together, to be honest, because a lot of old VFA clubs just don't exist any more, and even those that do seem to not have lots of information and records available. Newspapers and other publications also tended to ignore the competition or only sparsely report on it because the VFL was king. Some of the current clubs aren't even sure what they wore from year to year, and there's not many people left to ask.

There have been a few attempts to start a VFA museum or try and get a VFA section added to the ones at the MCG and/or Marvel, but there's just not enough interest.

I really wonder what happened to all the records, cups, flags, uniforms, etc of clubs like Brunswick, Camberwell, Yarraville, Prahran etc, who were in the league for ages or even clubs like Port and Williamstown who ran on volunteers and part time employees. Probably all got chucked out, which is just awful.

Working from BoylesFootyPhotos, I made these Camberwell uniforms on Paint.
Accuracy not 100% as players would occasionally wear hand-me-downs of earlier designs to save the club’s (little) money.

The amount of time that the Victorian Football Association, now known as the Victorian Football League, has been around, its first season was 1877 and the number of teams that have been member clubs, 55 teams was my last count, combine to create a huge task for anyone during the task.

List of VFA/VFL clubs and the years that they played in the VFA/VFL.
7uJOT2W.jpg

The amount of teams to have played in the VFL/AFL and no longer play in the AFL is one, University Football Club. All clubs that have competed in the AFL are still playing in the AFL. The league started in 1897 with the eight clubs being Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, Melbourne, St.Kilda and South Melbourne. South Melbourne moved to Sydney in 1982 and Fitzroy merged with Brisbane in 1996.

The VFA started in 1877 with five teams, Albert Park, Carlton, Essendon, Melbourne and St. Kilda. All five of these clubs became part of the VFL/AFL 19 years later. Albert Park merged with South Melbourne and became the South Melbourne Football Club. The longest surviving VFA/VFL clubs are Williamstown (since 1884) and Port Melbourne (since 1886). There are 48 other clubs in the history of the VFA/VFL, many of them no longer exist and their histories are not written down.

Here is a team photo of Brunswick. As can been seen most of the players are wearing black and white striped jumper with white as the middle stripe. But four players have black as the middle stripe. Also all players have two white stripes on the black collars of their jumpers, except two which have no stripes. The year that this photo is from is unknown.

The history of the Kilsyth Football Club can be placed onto one photo, the one above. It is the only one that I have found of their time in the VFA.
